Firstly to wish George Crompton a very Happy 90th Birthday for the 26th of August and present him with a token of our appreciation. George, Happy Birthday and I hope you have many more. I understand another 90th may be in the wind. Keep tuned. Secondly, as mentioned earlier, we have just completed 35 memorable years since the formation of the VBLCS. Five “foundation members” are with us today and are very active and important to our Society. It gave me great pleasure to thank George Crompton, Graeme Crompton and Herb Wooding for their fine service over the past 35 years. Sadly John Long was not in the best of health and Tom Anthony was being cared for in a Nursing Home however we also thank John and Tom. Umit was kind enough to visit Tom and I am travelling to Creswick to see John. How do we recognise the fine efforts of these people? Umit arranged photos and a commemorative label and brew for the occasion. Each was presented with their own personalised bottle and a few spare to enjoy over the next couple of months. We too will get a set of labels to recognise their fine efforts. Umit, my thanks and appreciation for doing the hard work in organising the gifts. On the label scene; We are continuing discussions with the Freer family on Alex’s collection and will keep you up to date. I have it catalogued and it is currently in storage. In brief terms it is a massive, mainly foreign, collection. The website is running and effectively managed by Ben Lawrence. A few modifications have been made. Check it out. www.vblcs.com Watch out for the many changes coming through. All breweries must now mention the standard drinks glass logo. This will keep you busy. Umit has kindly offered to review our Anniversary labels and keep us up to date with those missing years. Thanks Umit A very good suggestion was made at our last meeting, for your Committee to define the criteria behind Label of the Year. As you know the LOTY is selected by you from six nominated in each category by your Committee. How we do this will be defined early in 2008 when nominations are sought. New beers and labels – not only a vast array of new breweries but beer types as well. Not comprehensive but have you tried MB Barking Duck, MB Grayston Reserve 2007 and Coopers Vintage Ale 2007. Excellent beer styles and enormous marriage of flavours. Not cheap but a worthy experience. Watch out for the winery / beer marketing scene. A new and challenging strategy. There is never a dull moment in the World of Beer. May I remind you that Membership fees are due for 2007/2008. A number are yet to send theirs in. I think the fee is very modest and members get very good return. In addition David Dobney, our Treasurer has forwarded to you a slip to update our records. Can this be returned promptly please with your money. Many thanks. Our 14th October meeting theme will be the Swan Brewery. Now here is a challenge. Photos, labels, books, bottles and the odd can may feature. Don’t bring a keg or any feathered varieties. Club Tivoli offers a fine restaurant providing excellent German food and a range of beverages. Prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent. Give it a try. Remember the next meeting is on 14th October 2007 at 1.00 pm with meeting and swapping of labels and breweriana conducted in a fine social atmosphere. Cheers and happy collecting. Rob Greenaway AUGUST 2007 MEETING NOTES The meeting was held at the Club Tivoli in Windsor and commenced at 1.10 pm. APOLOGIES: John Long , George & Shirley Robinson , Ray Everingham , Bob Kendall , Phyl Godden , Terry Ryan and Clive Windley. The club wishes all those that are ill a speedy recovery. MINUTES: The minutes from the previous meeting were read and there were no comments forthcoming. FINANCE: The clubs financial position is in good shape and a full report was tabled. The treasurer reported that Terry Ryan sends his wishes to the club and apologies that he cannot attend due to ill health. CORRESPONDENCE: Several letters were received by both the secretary and president and have been acted upon. GENERAL BUSINESS: George Crompton was presented with a gift on behalf of the club to celebrate his 90th birthday. This, being the 35th anniversary of the V.B.L.C.S. Club, a presentation of beer with personalised labels was presented to the three inaugural members that were present. George Crompton, Graeme Crompton and Herb Wooding received their beer from Rob Greenaway to the applause of the members. John Long and Tom Anthony, the only other inaugural members will be presented with their beer, personally at a later date. Rob Greenaway reports that it is good to see that a lot of the new micro brewery labels are coming through. Clive Oliver suggested that selection of the "label of the year "should be more structured. Jack Wilks reported that the membership list as published on our website is very out of date. Gary McNair reported that the catalogues that he is working on are showing progress. Gary McNair also very kindly donated a carton of cold "Iceberg Beer" stubbies to members. Steve Greenwood invited members to the Maryborough bottle show to be held in two weeks time. George Crompton tabled the usual fine selection of foreign beer label club magazines. He pointed out that one of the clubs stated that the San Miguel brewery and a Canadian brewery will not issue labels to collectors in the future. Umit Ugur reported that the Celce Magazine from Spain has reproduced parts of our magazine in their magazine so we must be doing something right. RAFFLES: The raffles were then drawn and the lucky winners were - 1st F100 Sue Plant, 2nd A96 David Dobney , 3rd A78 Wayne Richardson. There were two sets of the five inaugural member beers raffled for members in the room. A total of 25 members signed the attendance book. The meeting closed at 1.55 pm. Angus McEwan Coopers displays by Laurie Clark and Bob Smith. AUSTRALIAN SMALL BREWERY UPDATE — SEPTEMBER 2007 The winter weather seems to have slowed the pace of new brewery openings (as it has of many things), making this Update briefer than normal. Nevertheless, interesting developments continue to take place. As usual, news from readers is welcome, so please let me know about anything that I have missed. If you have information to share about Australian small breweries (e.g. your accounts of personal visits to new breweries, or discoveries of new products or new brewery websites, or newspaper and magazine articles about new breweries, or other such things) please send to P.O. Box 5098, East Lismore, NSW, 2480 or [email protected]. Queensland The latest new brewery to open in Queensland is Burleigh Brewing Company, the creation of former Oxford-152 brewer, Brennan Fielding, and his wife Peta. Three beers under the ‘Duke’ brand were first released at the end of July 2007. They are a European-style premium lager, a super- hoppy pale ale (pictured), and a mid-strength lager. The brewery is situated a few kilometres inland from Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast, in an industrial estate conveniently close to the Pacific Motorway. Both draught and bottled beer will be distributed as far as Hervey Bay in the north and Coffs Harbour (New South Wales) in the south, within a region that the brewery calls ‘Duke Land’ (see the brewery website for a list of outlets).
