Btsisi', Blandas, and Malays
BARBARA S. NOWAK Massey University SINGAN KN÷N MUNTIL Btsisi’, Blandas, and Malays Ethnicity and Identity in the Malay Peninsula Based on Btsisi’ Folklore and Ethnohistory Abstract This article examines Btsisi’ myths, stories, and ethnohistory in order to gain an under- standing of Btsisi’ perceptions of their place in Malaysia. Three major themes run through the Btsisi’ myths and stories presented in this paper. The first theme is that Austronesian-speaking peoples have historically harassed Btsisi’, stealing their land, enslaving their children, and killing their people. The second theme is that Btsisi’ are different from their Malay neighbors, who are Muslim; and, following from the above two themes is the third theme that Btsisi’ reject the Malay’s Islamic ideal of fulfilment in pilgrimage, and hence reject their assimilation into Malay culture and identity. In addition to these three themes there are two critical issues the myths and stories point out; that Btsisi’ and other Orang Asli were original inhabitants of the Peninsula, and Btsisi’ and Blandas share a common origin and history. Keywords: Btsisi’—ethnic identity—origin myths—slaving—Orang Asli—Peninsular Malaysia Asian Folklore Studies, Volume 63, 2004: 303–323 MA’ BTSISI’, a South Aslian speaking people, reside along the man- grove coasts of the Kelang and Kuala Langat Districts of Selangor, HWest Malaysia.1* Numbering approximately two thousand (RASHID 1995, 9), Btsisi’ are unique among Aslian peoples for their coastal location and for their geographic separation from other Austroasiatic Mon- Khmer speakers. Btsisi’, like other Aslian peoples have encountered histori- cally aggressive and sometimes deadly hostility from Austronesian-speaking peoples. -

Risk Factors for Nipah Virus Transmission, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia: Results from a Hospital-Based Case-Control Study
RISK FACTORS FOR NIPAH VIRUS TRANSMISSION RISK FACTORS FOR NIPAH VIRUS TRANSMISSION, PORT DICKSON, NEGERI SEMBILAN, MALAYSIA: RESULTS FROM A HOSPITAL-BASED CASE-CONTROL STUDY NM Amal1, MS Lye1, TG Ksiazek2, PD Kitsutani2, KS Hanjeet1, MA Kamaluddin1, Flora Ong3, Sutha Devi4, PC Stockton2, O Ghazali5, R Zainab5 and MA Taha6 1Division of Epidemiology Research, Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 2Special Pathogens Task Force Head Quarters, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, USA; 3State Health Department, Sarawak, Malaysia; 4Hospital Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia; 5State Health Department, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia; 6Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Malaysia Abstract. A hospital-based case-control study of viral encephalitis was carried out at Port Dickson Hospital, in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Between March and May 1999, 69 clinically diagnosed viral encephalitis cases and 31 controls were interviewed. Job histories on pig farming activities were assessed by a group of epidemiologists and veterinary surgeons. Results show that among clinical cases of viral encephalitis, 52 (75.4%) cases were diagnosed to have Nipah virus infection based on positive serology for antibodies to the cross-reacting Hendra virus antigen. The Nipah virus encephalitis was significantly associated with a history of working in pig farms (p < 0.001, OR = 196.0, 95% CI = 20.4 - 4741.6), history of contact with animals (p < 0.001, OR = 38.3, 95% CI = 8.2 - 209.0) and with history of direct contact with pigs (p = 0.002, OR = 34.4, 95% CI = 2.6 - 1,024.4). The Nipah virus infection was also significantly associated with history of feeding/cleaning pigs (p < 0.001, OR = 102, 95% CI = 11.9 - 2,271.5). -

DETAILED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (DEIA) Proposed Development of Scheduled Waste to Energy (SWTE) Plant at Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre, Bukit Pelandok, Negeri Sembilan. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.0 INTRODUCTION The project is the “Proposed Development of Scheduled Waste to Energy (SWTE) Plant at Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre, Bukit Pelandok, Negeri Sembilan”. Kualiti Alam Sdn. Bhd. (KA) (“Project Proponent”), a Cenviro company, an investee company of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, is currently operating a waste management centre (KA WMC) at Ladang Tanah Merah, A3 Division, 71960 Bukit Pelandok, Negeri Sembilan. The KA WMC in Negeri Sembilan owns and operates the only integrated toxic and hazardous (scheduled) waste management centre in Malaysia. KA WMC is licensed to treat and disposed of all categories of waste code except for waste from manufacturing or processing or use of explosives. KA has two (2) existing thermal treatment plants designated as main incinerator (INC1) and KA modularized incinerator (INC4). The INC1 is currently operating at 100 MT/day of hazardous wastes while INC4 with a nominal capacity of 33 MT/day. Based on the previous and vast experience on successfully operating waste treatment facilities, KA now wishes to treat its scheduled wastes inclusive of clinical waste in the proposed Scheduled Waste to Energy (SWTE) plant, which has a nominal capacity of 100 MT/day. Unlike the current thermal treatment plants, the proposed SWTE plant has been designed to dispose of scheduled waste as the primary objective, and to generate energy as the secondary objective.
