  • Btsisi', Blandas, and Malays
BARBARA S. NOWAK Massey University SINGAN KN÷N MUNTIL Btsisi’, Blandas, and Malays Ethnicity and Identity in the Malay Peninsula Based on Btsisi’ Folklore and Ethnohistory Abstract This article examines Btsisi’ myths, stories, and ethnohistory in order to gain an under- standing of Btsisi’ perceptions of their place in Malaysia. Three major themes run through the Btsisi’ myths and stories presented in this paper. The first theme is that Austronesian-speaking peoples have historically harassed Btsisi’, stealing their land, enslaving their children, and killing their people. The second theme is that Btsisi’ are different from their Malay neighbors, who are Muslim; and, following from the above two themes is the third theme that Btsisi’ reject the Malay’s Islamic ideal of fulfilment in pilgrimage, and hence reject their assimilation into Malay culture and identity. In addition to these three themes there are two critical issues the myths and stories point out; that Btsisi’ and other Orang Asli were original inhabitants of the Peninsula, and Btsisi’ and Blandas share a common origin and history. Keywords: Btsisi’—ethnic identity—origin myths—slaving—Orang Asli—Peninsular Malaysia Asian Folklore Studies, Volume 63, 2004: 303–323 MA’ BTSISI’, a South Aslian speaking people, reside along the man- grove coasts of the Kelang and Kuala Langat Districts of Selangor, HWest Malaysia.1* Numbering approximately two thousand (RASHID 1995, 9), Btsisi’ are unique among Aslian peoples for their coastal location and for their geographic separation from other Austroasiatic Mon- Khmer speakers. Btsisi’, like other Aslian peoples have encountered histori- cally aggressive and sometimes deadly hostility from Austronesian-speaking peoples.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.0 INTRODUCTION The project is the “Proposed Development of Scheduled Waste to Energy (SWTE) Plant at Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre, Bukit Pelandok, Negeri Sembilan”. Kualiti Alam Sdn. Bhd. (KA) (“Project Proponent”), a Cenviro company, an investee company of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, is currently operating a waste management centre (KA WMC) at Ladang Tanah Merah, A3 Division, 71960 Bukit Pelandok, Negeri Sembilan. The KA WMC in Negeri Sembilan owns and operates the only integrated toxic and hazardous (scheduled) waste management centre in Malaysia. KA WMC is licensed to treat and disposed of all categories of waste code except for waste from manufacturing or processing or use of explosives. KA has two (2) existing thermal treatment plants designated as main incinerator (INC1) and KA modularized incinerator (INC4). The INC1 is currently operating at 100 MT/day of hazardous wastes while INC4 with a nominal capacity of 33 MT/day. Based on the previous and vast experience on successfully operating waste treatment facilities, KA now wishes to treat its scheduled wastes inclusive of clinical waste in the proposed Scheduled Waste to Energy (SWTE) plant, which has a nominal capacity of 100 MT/day. Unlike the current thermal treatment plants, the proposed SWTE plant has been designed to dispose of scheduled waste as the primary objective, and to generate energy as the secondary objective. • The Influence of Perpatih Custom on the Design of Traditional Malay Houses in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia
Research on Humanities and Social Sciences www.iiste.org ISSN (Paper)2224-5766 ISSN (Online)2225-0484 (Online) Vol.6, No.2, 2016 The Influence of Perpatih Custom on the Design of Traditional Malay Houses in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia Othman Mohd Nor Raja Nafida Raja Shahminan Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor, Malaysia Abstract The migration of the community of Minangkabau to Tanah Melayu had brought with them several influences into the local community such as culture and architecture. A significant cultural essence that had influenced the community in Negeri Sembilan is Pepatih Custom which is still practiced by the community nowadays. It plays various roles in the people’s lives including unity, family units according to the “suku”, marriages, deaths and how to inherit land and houses. In designing the traditional Malay houses in Negeri Sembilan, the family activities, as well as the community as a whole are thoroughly considered. A house is not perceived only as a place to stay but also a gathering place for other occasions such as weddings, funerals and deaths. The private and public areas are separated harmoniously from the aspects of architecture and religion. The strength of the design of the traditional Malay houses is also frequently depicted in verses and proverbs in the system of Pepatih Custom that relates to “kuat rumah kerana sendi rosak sendi rumah binasa” which means the community has to stand together in whatever situation and if they do not they will be weak and chaotic. Just like the role of “sendi” or joints of a house, they have to be designed perfectly because if the joints are loosely built the whole structure of the house would collapse.

  • Managing the Public During the Nipah Virus Outbreak in Negeri Sembilan
Buletin Kesihatan Masyarakat Isu Khas 2000 69 MANAGING THE PUBLIC DURING THE NIPAH VIRUS OUTBREAK IN NEGERI SEMBILAN Ramlee R..* INTRODUCTION The first Nipah virus outbreak was detected in Negeri Sembilan on 4th January 1999. It all started in Kampung Dato' Wong Seng Chow, Sikamat, in the district of Seremban. The outbreak was then identified as Japanese Encephalitis (JE). The machinery for control of JE was mobilised as soon as the outbreak in Perak was reported. That was done as early as 20th October 1998 with the collection of baseline data of all pig farms in the state. The state was put on alert and health education materials were produced and distributed. Among the communication challenges faced in controlling the outbreak were issues related to the handling of the pig farmers, workers, general public, the mass media, the encephalitis cases and their family members, non govermental organisations (NGO), health-care workers and other personels involved. THE FARMERS AND WORKERS The pig farms in Bukit Pelanduk area, coded BP I for Bukit Pelanduk I (Bukit Pelanduk II (BP II), coded for Sepang), Port Dickson, were different that those found in Perak and Seremban District. The farms in Perak were located in fruit orchards and the farmers and their workers did not stay in the farms. The farms in Seremban were well organised, fenced with living quarters for the workers within the farms with the farmers or owners staying elsewhere. The farms have proper drainage system for waste water from the pigsty to oxidation ponds before being discharged into the river Unlike the farms in Perak and Seremban, the farms in BP I were scattered within oil palm estates, with no proper fences and no proper drainage system.
