Henderson's initiatives are placed within the framework of the several fundamental changes that the U.S. Navy was undergoing as it worked to experiment with, acquire, and incorporate new naval technologies into its own operational concept. -

The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

Introduction ADDRESSING A WOULD-BE BIOGRAPHER near the dose of his incomparable career, Thomas Jefferson wrote, "The letters of a person, ... form the only full and genuine journal of his life; and few can let them go out of their own hands while they live. A life written after these hoards become open to investigation must supercede any previous one." Like Jefferson, whose many-sided public life his own resembled significantly, Wil liam Cullen Bryant began in old age a narrative of his early years. But, unlike his great democratic precursor, whom he had lampooned in youth and grown in maturity to admire greatly, he refused to undertake an autobiography. When, nearing eighty, he was urged by William Dean Howells to compose an account of his life, he replied, "I have thought a good deal of the reminiscences which you ask me to dish up for the Atlantic [Monthly], and the more I have thought the less am I inclined to the task. I cannot set them down without running into egotism. I remember more of my own experiences than of my associations with other men and the part they took in what fell under my observation." In the absence of a skillful and uniquely informed biographer, the record of Bryant's versatile career has become "thin and shadowy," wrote Vernon Parrington, since his death nearly a century ago. The unusual length of his public life (just seventy years), his extraordinarily various professional and civic activities, and his in satiable habit of travel, both at home and abroad, pose a stiff challenge to the best of chroniclers. -
Irving's Posterity
IRVING’S POSTERITY BY MICHAEL WARNER Like the narrators of all his major books—Geoffrey Crayon, Diedrich Knickerbocker, Jonathan Oldstyle, Fray Antonio Agapida—Washington Irving was a bachelor. In a sketch called “Bachelors” he wrote, “There is no character in the comedy of human life that is more difficult to play well, than that of an old Bachelor.”1 Reinventing that role was the project he took on, more or less consciously, from an early age. As a young man, he belonged to an intimate circle of bachelors (“Cockloft,” they called it) with whom he wrote Salmagundi; when the others married, he wrote with unusual passion about his abandonment. He then came to regard his writing career as an alternative to marriage. As an old man, he maintained himself at Sunnyside, his estate on the Hudson, as a surrogate patriarch to his nieces, his bachelor brother, miscellaneous dependents, and American letters in general. It was a role he played with success; before his death he was almost universally credited as “Patriarch of American literature” and “literary father of his country,” a pseudo-paternity most famously illustrated in the so-called Sunnyside portrait. When he died, he would be eulogized as “the most fortunate old bachelor in all the world.”2 Yet bachelorhood was something he consistently regarded as anoma- lous, problematic, and probably immoral. Irving claimed as early as 1820 that his natural inclination was to be “an honest, domestic, uxorious man,” and that matrimony was indispensable to happiness.3 Over twenty years later, he wrote, “I have no great idea of bachelor hood and am not one by choice. -

The Dance of the Comedians examines standup comedy—particularly its ramifications for the presidency and Americans’ perceptions of that institution—as a uniquely compelling form of cultural performance. Part ceremonial ritual and part playful improvisation, the performance of political comedy in its diverse forms became a potent site of liminality that empowered all of its constituents—the comic, the audience, and the object of the joke—to reexamine and renegotiate the roles of all concerned. v Fellow in the Arts 1828-1831 (LEITERS 195 TO 222) THE YEARS FROM 1828 TO 1831 were as happy as any Bryant had ever enjoyed and, despite growing responsibility for his newspaper, as carefree. Through his active part in the programs of the New York Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design, and his collaboration with writers and artists in preparing the successive Talisman volumes, he assumed a central role in the city's cul tural life. And his fondness for satire, indulged as a youth in "The Embargo," and as a village lawyer in newspaper essays and in his farce "The Heroes," found targets among the city's fashionables in "The Legend of the Devil's Pulpit," published in The Talisman, and in jeux d'esprit in the Evening Post, such as a verse lampoon of Fanny Wright and repeated spoofs of edi torial opponents. As the second Talisman appeared at the close of 1828, its creators formal ized their association in a "Sketch Club," or "Twenty-One," which provided convivial gatherings at the homes of its members in rotation, at which they exercised their artistic skills and put together another edition of their annual. The club's intimacy as well as its secrecy were fostered by its limitation to twenty-one members and its obscure announcements of weekly meetings published among the obituaries in the Evening Post. Its gatherings were for the most part frolicsome, with serio-comic themes proposed by the host for varied expression in sketches, verses, or prose articles. But its members also collaborated in more serious projects. -

Berkeley, Department of Sociology 410 Barrows Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-1980 [email protected] 23 October, 2013 Abstract We study one dimension of property-rights law, copyright law, and its reciprocal relationship with cultural conceptions of authorship in Britain and America from the early eighteenth to the mid nineteenth century. We assess the joint impact of these forces on the market for literary texts in America and the organizations that published those texts. Because magazines, not books, were the primary forum for literary expression in America during this time, our analysis focuses on magazines. We find that copyright law had limited direct effects on magazines. Very few sought copyright protection for their contents, and the few copyright claims that did exist were not tested by the courts. Instead, magazines freely reprinted work from domestic sources, including other magazines. Because there was no copyright protection in U.S. law for foreign authors during this time, magazines also freely reprinted material from foreign sources. The development of copyright law spurred the emergence of a cultural conception of the author as a paid professional; in turn, this altered the nature of the market for literary texts, as magazines began to pay authors for their original work and compete intensely over the work of the most popular authors.
