This outstanding Meissen collection includes two white porcelain models of a lion and lioness (estimate: £3,000,000-5,000,000) and a white model of a fox and hen (estimate: £200,000-300,000) commissioned for the Japanese Palace in Dresden together with a white element vase in the form of a ewer (£10,000-15,000). “The porcelain menagerie was an ambitious and unparalleled project in the history of ceramics and the magnificent size of these models is a testament to the skill of the Meissen factory,” said Rodney Woolley, Director and Head of European Ceramics. “The sheer exuberance of these examples bears witness to the outstanding modelling of Kirchner and Kändler. The opportunity to acquire these Meissen masterpieces from the direct descendants of Augustus the Strong is unique and we are thrilled to have been entrusted with their sale,” he continued. The works of art have been recently restituted to the heirs of the Royal House of Saxony, the Wettin family. Commenting on the Meissen masterpieces, a spokesperson for the Royal House of Saxony said: “The Wettin family has worked closely, and over many years with the authorities to achieve a successful outcome of the restitution of many works of art among which are these four Meissen porcelain objects, commissioned by our forebear Augustus the Strong.

The various ways in which the Dresden bombings have been remembered and commemorated has contributed a great deal towards this city’s enduring legacy. This thesis examines the wartime bombings of Dresden to investigate how the memory, commemoration and narrative of the Dresden raids have been shaped and framed in public and academic discourses since 1945. To do so, this study focuses on the city of Dresden during the phase of Allied occupation, the period of East Germany and briefly beyond reunification to demonstrate the ongoing and changing discursive legacy of this controversial event.

EXAMPLE PROGRAM DRESDEN D R E S D E N , YOUR DESTINATION – 2 INSPIRATION DRESDEN Cultural Center, Semper Opera House, Florence of the Elbe, Canaletto’s view – All these stand for Dresden. Dresden is a very beautiful, light spirited city, especially in summer, when you can appreciate the serene setting of the historic center. Although Dresden is larger than Munich when measured by area, the historic center is quite compact and walkable. Dresden offers attractions in great variety. No book about the history of architecture can miss mentioning the Dresden Zwinger. The Frauenkirche Church, Semper Opera House and Royal Palace as well as many other historical monuments and ensembles determine the image of the city. The saucy angels from Raphael’s “The Sistine Madonna” make publicity for Dresden’s art collections in the whole world. Magnificent promenades on the bank of the Elbe, interesting museums and institutions, industrial monuments, charming details — Dresden has a lot for you to discover. 3 WELCOME DINNER SOPHIENKELLER In the historical arches of the Taschenberg Palace, right in front of the famous “Zwinger“, you will be abducted into the historical world of the 18th century and life of Augustus II the Strong. The kitchen of the Sophie Cellar is primarily regional with lots of house-made specialties. The atmosphere is cozy and informal, very relaxed. 5 ITALIENISCHES DÖRFCHEN The „Italienische Dörfchen“ restaurant is situated in the historical center at „Theaterplatz“ plaza. When the Italian architect, Gaetano Chiaveri, was building the catholic church of the Royal Court, the workers and artists, who were also Italian, lived nearby the site in small houses.

  • Bavarian Times | 38 Dresdenhas Been Nicknamed "Florence on the Elbe"
avel R T The Dresden Semper opera is one of the most fascinating buildings in Germany. The Dresden Zwinger is the most important building of the late baroque era and with its crown gate is considered the city‘s landmark. Dresden has been nicknamed "Florence on the Elbe" because the city on the Elbe river features large art collections and baroque buildings. Many architectural highlights can be admired in Dresden's old town: Surrounded by the Semper opera, the Zwinger and the Frauenkirche stands the residential palace, which has been rebuilt. It was almost completely burned out during the bombing raids on Dresden in February 1945. Only part of the historic green vault and the basement remained intact. It is thanks to the pompous Elector "August the Strong" Fried- rich August I (May 12, 1670 - February 1, 1733), who was also King of Poland, that Saxony has so many cultural mo- numents. Due to his influence, the reconstruction of the royal seat into a baroque total work of art began. During his reign from 1694 to 1733, the Dresden Zwinger, the Taschenberg- palais, the Moritzburg hunting lodge and the Pillnitz palace were built. The residents of Dresden also owe the elector the extensive collection in the green vault of the palace and the construction of the Frauenkirche. In 1709, August the Strong commissioned the Dresden Zwin- ger as an orangery and garden as well as a representative festival area. Owning orange trees was a sign of greatest po- enate Gradl enate (5) R wer in the 18th century.
