August 2017 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the August 2017 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. We have a great line-up of bird literature for you this month. For birdwatchers we have The Birds of the Falkland Islands: An Annotated Checklist (part of the former BOU checklist series), The Birder's Guide to Africa (August), The Birds of Colonsay and Oronsay: An Island Avifauna and Bird Atlas, and a 2nd edition of A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Australia (November). Both collectors and curators will be interested in Atlas of Feathers for Western Palearctic Birds (Passerines) - Concise Edition (December), which is the first of a two-part publication. Other titles to do with conservation are The Last Flight of the Ancient Guide of Hajj: Northern Bald Ibis – The Most Threatened Bird of the Middle East and Christopher Helm's Birds New to Science: 50 Years of Avian Discoveries (January). For those interested in bird art, we have Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey (September) by Princeton Architectural Press, and our very own BTO, who is publishing Flight Lines: Tracking the Wonders of Bird Migration (August) in cooperation with the Society of Wildlife Artists. Lastly, Faber & Faber will publish Owl Sense (September), which looks like another memoir on the bond between humans and birds of prey. We also have a strong list of herpetology titles this month, and readers can look forward to two new titles from Chimaira, The Herpetofauna of Corfu and Adjacent Islands (available now) and The Snakes of Java, Bali and Surrounding Islands (September), while John Beaufoy is publishing three Naturalist's Guides to reptiles of Sri Lanka (August), Bali (August) and Australia (August). For entomologists we have two obscure titles: Field Guide to the Robberflies of the Netherlands and Belgium, which has proved very popular since arriving at the warehouse, and Butterflies and Moths of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. Meanwhile the Field Studies Council announced RES Handbook, Volume 7, Part 4: The Banchine Wasps (Ichneumonidae: Banchinae) of the British Isles just before this catalogue was put together. Those interested in mammals can look forward to Johns Hopkins's Lagomorphs: Pikas, Rabbits, and Hares of the World (January), which looks set to continue their publishing programme of in-depth studies of whole animal groups, and John Beaufoy's A Naturalist’s Guide to the Mammals of Australia (November). On the subject of botany we found the following notable titles this month: Carnivorous Plants: Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution (January) from Oxford University Press, Joseph Banks' Florilegium: Botanical Treasures from Cook's First Voyage (October) from Thames & Hudson, The Genus Sloanea (Elaeocarpaceae) in America from David Hunt, and Pictorial Flora of the Mani (3-Volume Set) (September) which follows on the very successful field guide to the same region that NatureFocus Publishing released last year October. Marine life is represented this month by Manta: Secret Life of Devil Rays, published by the Manta Trust, Low-Tide Pictolife Eastern Atlantic, and Squid Empire: The Rise and Fall of the Cephalopods (October), published by the University Press of New England, which sounds like a very exciting book on the long evolutionary history of cephalopods. Also of note is that the BBC will be broadcasting Blue Planet II soon, and the accompanying book been announced for October. Sir David Attenborough will be presenting this series again, so I expect many amongst us will be glued to their screens while that airs. We would like to draw the attention of ecologists and conservationists to Princeton's Metacommunity Ecology (November), part of their long-running Monographs in Population Biology series, Springer's The Roles of Remote Sensing in Nature Conservation: A Practical Guide and Case Studies (September), Penguin's The Vanishing: India’s Wildlife Crisis, and Virunga: Archives and Collections of an Outstanding National Park from the Royal Museum for Central Africa. Finally, Patrick Barkham has written Islander: A Journey Around Our Archipelago (October), which should make for excellent natural history reading. As always, if you are looking for a particular title that we do not yet have in our range, or you would like to suggest a title for NHBS to stock, please do get in touch.
