Other workers, viz., Bairagi, Bhadra, Mukhopadhyaya, Misra, Reddy (1995); Subba Rao et. al., (1992, 1995); Talukdar et. al., (1996); Ramakrishna and Sarkar (1998); Sastry (1995, 1998) and Mitra et. al., (2002) also reported some marine invertebrates under different faunal groups from Hughly-Matla estuary, including Digha. But uptil recently there is no comprehensive updated list of marine invertebrates from Digha coast and adjoining areas. With the establishment of Marine Aquarium and Research Centre, Digha in the year 1990, opportunity was launched for undertaking an extensive exploration and studying seasonal changes that have been taken place on the coastal biodiversity in this area. Accordingly, the authors of the present work, started collecting the detailed faunal infonnation from Digha and adjoining coastal areas [Fig. 2 and 3]. During the study, it has transpired that exploitation of coastal resources has very abruptly increased in recent years. Several new fishing gears are employed, a number of new marine organisms are recognized as commercial fish and non fish resources. Also, the number of trawlers has increased to a large extent. The present paper based on the observations from 1990 to 2000 (including the current records upto January, 2002), is an uptodate database for the available species of marine invertebrates from this area. -

The Coen types, now at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have been examined; most of them are holotypes or lectotypes. Some lectotypes were already selected by van Aartsen, as stated in the label, therefore we have not done any further selection of types. The new pyramidellid species have been practically identified and named by Monterosato, and were all found in shell grit collected on the beach of Lido (a small island in front of Venice). Healy School of Biological Sciences (Zoology, A08), University of Sydney; 2006, New South Wales, Australia ABSTRACT: Ultrastructural observations on spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of selected pyramidellid gastropods (species of Turbonilla, ~gulina, Cingufina and Hinemoa) are presented. During spermatid development, the condensing nucleus becomes initially anterio-posteriorly com- pressed or sometimes cup-shaped. Concurrently, the acrosomal complex attaches to an electron- dense layer at the presumptive anterior pole of the nucleus, while at the opposite (posterior) pole of the nucleus a shallow invagination is formed to accommodate the centriolar derivative. Midpiece formation begins soon after these events have taken place, and involves the following processes: (1) the wrapping of individual mitochondria around the axoneme/coarse fibre complex; (2) later internal metamorphosis resulting in replacement of cristae by paracrystalline layers which envelope the matrix material; and (3) formation of a glycogen-filled helix within the mitochondrial derivative (via a secondary wrapping of mitochondria). Advanced stages of nuclear condensation {elongation, transformation of fibres into lamellae, subsequent compaction) and midpiece formation proceed within a microtubular sheath ('manchette'). It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed. -

Eight species are recorded for the first time; 3 species were mentioned by name only (but not discussed) in the article by Barash & Danin (1982: 107) and 18 species have been dealt with in articles on individual Indo-Pacific immigrants. Along with the 29 species not yet discussed in earher reports, 4 species, which have been treated pre- viously are included in this paper for supplementary data (see general remarks, p. 130ff.). This report is based on material obtained from various sources, as follows: A great deal of dredging was carried out during 1974-1977 by the late Prof. Ch. Lewinsohn (Tel Aviv University) and his assistants M. Tom and B. Galil. They worked in the infralittoral zone in north and south Israel and opposite the Mediterranean coast of north Sinai. Among the material coUected by them the nudibranch Plocamopherus ocellatus is noteworthy because of its power of luminescence (O'Do- NOGHUE 1929: 808). -

TRITON No 35 March 2017 A NEW SPECIES OF TURBONILLA (RISSO, 1826) FROM SE TURKEY (PYRAMIDELLIDAE: TURBONILLINAE) Panayotis Ovalis1 & Constantine Mifsud2 Summary: A new species, Turbonilla cangeyrani nov. sp., is described from Tasucu, SE Turkey. Keywords: Mollusca, Gastropoda, Pyramidellidae, Turbonilla, Tasucu, SE Turkey, Eastern Mediterranean. Introduction: The genus Turbonilla is represented in the European seas with about fifty species, while those recorded from the Mediterranean Sea include about thirty of these species. A few of the West African species have recently been discovered as also present in the western Mediterranean. The genus is characterised by a tall shell with axial ribs, sometimes with spiral sculpture, an intorted type of protoconch, mostly of type A (Aartsen 1981), and the lack of a columellar tooth or fold. Most of the species are white but a few possess a particular colouration. Recently a few European species, which in the past had been placed in the genus Turbonilla, have now been assigned to other genera on the basis of particular characters of the shell. During a dive at Tasucu, SE Turkey the first author collected a sample of bioclastic detritus from a depth of 8 metres. During the sorting out of the detritus, twenty-six specimens of a Turbonilla sp. were set aside for further examination. From their particular sculpture they were different from any of the known Mediterranean, the West African and Indo-Pacific species, and is described herein as new to science. The latter is here placed in genus Tibersyrnola Laws, 1937 on the basis of the constant presence of flutings inside the whorls.
