CP. 11600, Montevideo, Uruguay. *[email protected] RESUMEN Se determinaron número cromosómico, cariotipo, patrones de bandeo, localización de genes ribosómicos y contenido de ADN nuclear, en dos poblaciones de Brasiliopuntia schulzii (Cactaceae, subfam. Opuntioideae). La especie resultó diploide (2n=22), presentó una fórmula cariotípica de 10 m + 1 sm. El bandeo cromosómico CMA/DAPI reveló la presencia de un par cromosómico con una banda CMA+/DAPI- asociada a NORs. Con la técnica de FISH se observó que los loci 18- 5,8-26S fueron consistentes con los bloques CMA+/DAPI-/NORs. La señal para el gen 5S se localizó en el cuarto par m en una región telomérica. En las dos poblaciones el análisis de contenido de ADN reveló una mezcla de núcleos con tres picos de 2C, 4C y 8C. Esto indicaría un proceso de endopoliploidía en la especie. Los resultados reportados en este trabajo, combinados con las características morfológicas, indicarían que este género posee caracteres basales, concordando con los análisis filogenéticos de la subfamilia. Their potential ability to produce mycotoxins was evaluated by PCR protocols which allow a rapid detection of OTA and FB2 biosynthetic genes in their genomes. OTA production is not widespread in A. niger aggregate since only 17% of A. niger and 6% of A. welwitschiae isolates presented the complete biosynthetic cluster whereas the lack of the cluster was confirmed in all A. tubingensis isolates. On the other hand, A. niger and A. welwitschiae seem to be important FB2 producers with 97% and 29% of the isolates, respectively, presenting the complete cluster.

    There are other species that have thin MottramPhoto: Roy Mottram Photo: Roy trailing stems, with spine clusters, and look like a normal cactus, for example Aporocactus (the Rat’s Tail Cactus, easy to grow and spectacular in a hanging basket) (Fig. 3) and Selenicereus (the Queen of the Night) (Fig. 4). This plant likes to climb and scramble along the rafters of a greenhouse, but be careful as it can push through vents. The flowers are produced throughout the summer and take several weeks to develop. The flowers begin to open around 8.00pm and are finished by 8.00am the next day, but it is worth staying up to see them. Around 230mm (9”) diameter, they form creamy white trumpets with brownish thin outer petals and are slightly scented. A third interesting genus is Rhipsalis with a profusion of, mainly, small flow- ers and colourful berries (Figs. 5a–c). It is a good idea to give all epiphytes a Fig. 3 Aporocactus flagelliformis, the Rat’s Tail Cactus spell outside during the frost free months of the summer. Hanging baskets can be hung under trees, where the dappled shade is ideal. Pots of epicacti like a shady wall, and will often set fruit. Suitable composts include any rich in humus or peat, preferably slightly acidic and with very good drainage by the liberal addition of grit, gravel and/or sharp sand. They often have quite small root systems, particularly schlumbergeras, so when repotting, choose a pot only a little larger than their current one. As for other cacti, leave dry for a week after repotting, and longer if there is any root damage or rot.

It is closely related to Baccharis plummerae subsp. plummerae but differs in having narrow, subentire, typically conduplicate, sparsely villous to mostly glabrous leaves with glands occurring in depressions on the adaxial surface, more cylindrical inflorescences, and a distribution in open chaparral vegetation. The new taxon shares some characteristics with B. plum­ merae subsp. glabrata of northwestern San Luis Obispo County, e.g., smaller leaves, reduced vestiture, and occurrence in scrub habitat, but the two taxa appear to have developed independently from B.

This report is the result of a cooperative effort by the Rocky Mountain Research Station and the USDA Forest Service Region 3, with participation by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Bureau of Land Management. It assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl in Arizona. The population decline of this owl has been attributed to the loss of riparian areas before and after the turn of the 20th century. Currently, the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl is chiefly found in southern Arizona in xeroriparian vegetation and well- structured upland desertscrub. The primary threat to the remaining pygmy-owl population appears to be continued habitat loss due to residential development. Important information gaps exist and prevent a full understanding of the current population status of the owl and its conservation needs.
