The Faroe Islands will look to build on their extraordinary victory against Greece in Piraeus last year as the sides come together again in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group F. Previous meetings • Jóan Edmundsson's 61st-minute goal earned the Faroe Islands a surprise 1-0 win in Greece in the sides' first Group F encounter in November. It was the Faroes' first competitive away win since 2001, and prompted the departure of Greece's Italian coach . • Greece captain said: "We lost to a weaker team that played better than us. I don't know how to summarise our performance. Non-existent, unacceptable?" • Greece had won both of the nations' previous meetings, with a 5-1 away success and 5-0 triumph at home bookending their EURO '96 qualifying campaign. • In the first of those encounters, on 7 September 1994, Jan Allan Müller (88) belatedly struck back for 's Faroe Islands side after Konstantinos Polychroniou's team had taken a 5-0 lead through Dimitrios Saravakos (11), Panagiotis Tsalouchidis (17, 86) and Alexios Alexandris (54, 61). • There was to be no consolation goal in Heraklion on 15 November 1995, however, with Alexandris (59), Demis Nikolaidis (62), Nikos Machlas (66), Georgios Donis (76) and Vasilis Tsiartas (80) all on target.

Form guide • The victory against Greece remains the Faroes' only success of the campaign, but they have conceded just seven goals in five Group F games to date, matching their best ever defensive performance at this stage of a qualifying campaign – they let in seven in their first five 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. • The win against Greece also brought the Faroes their only clean sheet in their last 18 competitive games. • The Faroes' best ever defensive performance over the course of a whole campaign was in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2000, when they conceded 17 times in ten fixtures – an average of 1.7 per game. At the moment, they are conceding at a rate of 1.4 per match. • The Faroes are without a win in eight competitive home contests (D1 L7) since a 2-0 success against Estonia on 7 June 2011. • The Faroes have done the double over three sides in European qualifying campaigns: San Marino (EURO '96), Malta (1998 World Cup) and Luxembourg (2002 World Cup). • Nikos Karelis's goal in Greece's 1-1 draw with Finland in Helsinki remains their only Group F strike; they have not scored in three qualifiers since, most recently recording a 0-0 draw with Hungary in their first outing under new coach Sergio Markarián. • Greece are unbeaten in their last five away games in qualifying competitions (W2 D3).

Trivia and links • Greece have won all six of the nations' meetings in UEFA men's age-group competitions without conceding, averaging three goals a game at the other end. • The only previous encounter between the nations' clubs came in the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup group stage, Panahaiki FC recording a 4-2 home victory against B36 Tórshavn.

5 Faroe Islands - Greece Saturday 13 June 2015 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Tórsvøllur, Torshavn Head coach Lars Olsen Date of birth: 2 February 1961 Nationality: Danish Playing career: Glostrup IF, Køge BK, Brøndby IF (twice), Trabzonspor AŞ, RFC Seraing, FC Basel 1893 Coaching career: Randers FC, BK, Faroe Islands • Enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a central defender, winning five Danish titles in a six-year spell at Brøndby between 1985 and 1991. • Allegedly drove from Turkey to Scandinavia when he learned of his country's belated call-up to EURO '92. His passion and leadership – he played every minute in Sweden – helped inspire Denmark to the most unlikely of triumphs. He ended his career with 84 caps, a record 69 as captain. • Learned his coaching craft with Brøndby, taking charge at various youth and reserve levels after finishing his playing days at the club in 1996, before accepting his first senior job with newly formed Randers in 2003. Guided the team into the Danish Super League in 2004 but could not help maintain their elite status, suffering immediate relegation. • Steered second-division Randers to a surprise 2006 success, beating Esbjerg fB in the final, while also securing a return to the top flight. Moved to Odense in summer 2007, leading his new side to a fourth-place finish in his first term. Consecutive runners-up spots followed in 2008/09 and 2009/10 before he departed in September 2010. • Appointed coach of the Faroe Islands in November 2011, his team were unable to register a win as they came bottom of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group C, earning their only point in a 1-1 home draw with Kazakhstan. Sergio Markarián Date of birth: 1 November 1944 Nationality: Uruguayan Coaching career: Club Sol de América, Club Olímpia, Club Cerro Porteño, Paraguay (twice), Club Universitario de Deportes, Club Sporting Cristal, Ionikos FC, Panathinaikos FC, Iraklis FC, Club Libertad, Cruz Azul FC, Club Universidad de Chile, Danubio FC, Peru, Greece • A youth player but never a professional, Markarián studied at university and was working at a fuel distribution company in his native Uruguay when, aged 30, he decided on a new direction. • He began his football coaching career with the Sol de América B team in 1974. It would be nine years before he got his first professional contract, in Paraguay with Club Olímpia. • Won four league titles in Paraguay (two each with Club Olímpia and Club Libertad), two in Peru (Universitario de Deportes and Sporting Cristal) and the Apertura championship in Chile (Universidad de Chile). • Moved to Greece in 1998 for a season at Ionikos. Returned in December 2001 to take charge of Panathinaikos, guiding the Greens to back-to-back quarter-finals in Europe – the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League and 2002/03 UEFA Cup. • Under Markarián, Paraguay (1992–93, 1999–2002) and Peru (2010–13) both achieved their highest FIFA rankings. That success and his knowledge of local football prompted his appointment as Greece coach in February 2015, Markarián tasked with salvaging their UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying bid.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
