Our : St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise

Biography

St. Kieran (Ciaran) of Clonmacnoise, also known as St. Kieran the Younger, was born around 512 AD in Connact, Ireland. The town was located in the northern part of County Roscommon. The son of Beoit, a carpenter and chariot builder, Kieran inherited a love of learning from his mother’s side of the family, as his maternal grandfather had been a bar, poet, and historian. Baptized by Deacon Justus (“the Righteous One,”) who also served as his first tutor, the boy Kieran worked as a cattle herder. Even this early in his life, stories testifying to Kieran’s holiness are told. Some later believed that his work as a herdsman foreshadowed the care he would offer the many who sought his wisdom.

Kieran continued his education at the monastery of Clonard, which was led by St. Finnian. Yet another story, that of the “Dun-Cow of Kieran,” is associated with his move to this abbey. What is quite certain is that Kieran quickly gained the reputation of being the most learned monk at Clonard and was asked to serve as tutor to the daughter of the King of Cuala, even as he continued his own studies. His friend and fellow student, Columcille of Iona, testified to Kieran’s brilliance by saying, “He was a lamp, blazing with the light of wisdom.” Besides being renowned for his brilliance, Kieran also had a great capacity for friendship with other leaders of the early Irish church. In addition to Justus, Columcille, and Finnian, Kieran counted Enda of the Aran Islands as his mentor, and both Senan of Scattery Island and of as friends and colleagues. Kieran’s years of residence at Clonard were also marked by miraculous events that benefitted the entire monastery.

Saint of the Week

This weekend the church celebrates the feasts days of St. Monica (September 27) and her son, St. Augustine (September 28.) St. Monica (c.331-387 AD) knew the pain of disappointment, an unfaithful husband named Patricius who drank too much, and a promiscuous son, Augustine, who lived an immoral life. Through patience and love, her husband had a change of heart, choosing to become a Christian. Augustine’s difficult con versation caused St. Monica to constant prayer and fasting. When nothing seemed to work, she consulted St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, for guidance. Through the intervention of God, the two of them managed to lead Augustine to baptism. St. Monica exemplifies that unconditional love and persistence are portals for God’s saving grace. St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) is one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church. Augustine was born in North Africa in present-day Algeria. Augustine showed great promise as a scholar, but he disappointed his mother by his self-indulgent life-style. Eventually, due in large part to the efforts of his mother, he become a Christian and was baptized by St. Ambrose in Milan. He became a priest, and later, the bishop of Hippo. Augustine was a prolific writer and is credited with writing one of the first autobiographies, his Confessions. His books, homilies, and letters are a rich source of theological insight still mined today by students of every Christian denomination or ecclesial community. St. Monica, pray for us!, St. Augustine, pray for us!
