Penance “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The Virgin Mary is without sin. You and I, however, need to pray for the forgiveness of our sins and for the conversion of sinners. The Message of Lourdes teaches us to do pen- ance. When on February 24, 1858 the Virgin Mary told Bernadette to pray for the conversion of sinners, she also said the word, “Penance.” That reminds us of the third part of the Fatima secret, where an angel with a flaming sword cries out three times the word “penance” to the people of the earth. Let us not forget the message of Saint Faustina and the chaplet of Divine Mercy, given to the world in the 1930s and invoking God’s mercy on the human race. Pope Saint John Paul II gave us the lu- minous mysteries of the rosary, the third one being “the proclamation of the gospel and the call to repentance.” Yes, all of us need ongoing con- version. We need to fight against our savage nature, as Bernadette said. * Here are some ways, collected from various sources**, that you and I can battle against “the waywardness that is ours.” *** At the foundation of our works of penance is the observation of what the Church requires. Friday, the day on which Jesus died on the Cross, is the traditional day of penance. Abstinence from meat should be observed on Fridays, although outside of Lent a person may substitute another penance or good work. During Lent, the Church asks us to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays and to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstinence from meat obliges those fourteen years old and above, health permitting. Fasting obliges those from eighteen up until their fifty-ninth birthday, again health permitting. Pray the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Cultivate the good habit of a family Rosary once a week. Do some penance of your own choosing during Lent and Advent. Don’t neglect your prayers, even if you feel worn out. Make it a practice to go to confession regularly and frequently. Be “very charitable at all times towards those around you, starting with the members of your own family.” Be “full of tenderness and kindness towards the suffering, the sick and the infirm.” Visit regularly and pray with those who are sick and those confined to their homes because of advanced age. You can lift them up in their loneliness. Give “patient answers to people who are … annoying.” Interrupt your work or change your plans “when circumstances make this necessary, above all when the just and rightful needs of others are involved.” Put up “with the thousand and one little pinpricks of each day.” Offer up to the Lord whatever suffer- ings you endure. Make “demands on yourself so that you find enough time for each of your tasks.” Get up on time and don’t leave “for later, without any real reason, that particular job that you find harder or most difficult to begin or finish.” Next Week: Seeking the Good of Others * René Laurentin, Bernadette of Lourdes: A Life Based on Authenticated Documents, John Drury, trans.
