REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR 1895.

GROWTH OF THE MUSEUM. The year 1895 has witnessed the steady and continued advance of the Museum in prosperity and usefulness. Though the year has not been eventful in the reception of conspicuous gifts, additions have been made to its collections, and facilities for instruction have increased. Several departments of the Museum have been materially enriched and extended; the increase being greater than that which seemed surprising in the earlier years of the Museum. In the Department of Casts, the halls which were not ready for exhibition at the opening of the new northern wing, have been arranged and opened to the public, except only those devoted to objects of the Mediaeval and Renaissance periods, which will be opened not later than next May.

FINANCES OF THE MUSEUM. The statement of the Treasurer, given above, exhibiting the receipts and disbursements in detail, shows the amount required for the maintenance of the Museum during the year. The finances of the Museum have never been in a better condition than at the close of the year. The Museum is wholly out of debt, and it is the policy of the Trustees to keep it so hereafter.

NUMBER OF VISITORS. The number of persons who visited the Museum during the year was 526,488, of which 190,168 attended on Sunday after­ noons—an increase of 14,607 from last year.

NUMBER OF COPYISTS. The number of copyists in the Department of Painting was 280 ; in the other Departments, 97. The number of persons sketching on oral permits, of whom no record is kept, was more than 350, chiefly designers in decoration and manufacture, illus­ trators and Art students. 14

SCHOOLS AND COLXEGES. The number of visits made by public and private schools and colleges during the year, for study and instruction, was thirty-eight. At these visits the pupils were accompanied by their teacher, who explained to them the special objects of their study ; and notes and sketches were freely made by the students and their teachers.

EDUCATIONAL WORK. In pursuance of the agreement entered into four years ago with Columbia College, the regular winter course of Art Lectures was continued through January, February, and March, and another course was begun in December, to continue every Satur­ day till the end of March. These lectures are very popular, and the attendance is large. Besides the visits of Schools and Colleges, peripatetic lectures during exhibition hours, in the halls and galleries, by teachers and specialists, have been freely permitted when not interfering with the ordinary privileges of visitors. These have continued undiminished. The demand for photographs of objects in the Museum, not only for printed illustrations at home and abroad, but for wall and lantern illustrations in the institutions of learning in various parts of the country, has been considerable, and has much extended the desirable influence of the Museum.

NEW ACQUISITIONS. Among the gifts should be mentioned the marble statue, " The Bather," by the late Edmund Stewardson, presented by his father, Thomas Stewardson. The collection of musical instruments presented by Mrs. John Crosby Brown has been increased by several hundred specimens, some of which are of extreme rarity. Additional exhibition room is now being made ready for them ; and these instruments will all be placed on exhibition for the semi-annual Spring Reception. The unsurpassed, and in some respects unique, collection of ancient Etruscan, Roman and Longobardic objects in gold and '5 other precious materials, heretofore loaned by Mr. Samuel Thomas Baxter, of Florence, Italy, has become the property of the Museum by purchase. A detailed list of acquisitions will be found at the end of this report.

EXTENSION OF THE MUSEUM BUILDING. The State Legislature passed an Act, which became a law on the 16th of April last, authorizing the expenditure of $1,000,000 by the city for the Museum building. The text of the law is as follows :— " SECTION I. The Department of Public Parks in the City of New York, with the concurrence of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, is hereby authorized to construct and com­ plete an extension of the building in the Central Park, occupied by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in accordance with plans to be made by the Trustees of the said Museum, and to be approved by the Commissioners of said Department of Public Parks, at an expense not exceeding one million dollars. " SEC. 2. For the purpose of providing means for carrying into effect the provisions of this act, it shall be the duty of the Comptroller, upon being thereunto authorized by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, to issue and sell, but not at less than their par value, bonds or stock of the Mayor, Aldermen and Commonalty of the City of New York, in the manner now pro­ vided by law, payable from taxation, but not exceeding in any one year the sum of two hundred thousand dollars, nor in the aggregate the sum of one million dollars, bearing interest at a rate not exceeding three and one-half per centum per annum, and redeemable within a period of time not exceeding thirty years from the date of their issue." The Trustees immediately began the preparation of plans for this extension ; the Building Committee, of which the late Mr. Richard M. Hunt was chairman, entering forthwith upon the work, and consuming the entire season in the requisite active deliberation and studv, with repeated examinations of the ground. The plans were finally perfected, adopted by the Board i6 of Trustees on the 30th of October, 1895, and by them sent to the Commissioners of Public Parks for approval. With a slight amendment the plans were duly approved by the Commissioners of Public Parks by resolution of November 7th, 1895. Thus duly approved and recommended by the Park Department, the plans were sent to the Board of Estimate and Apportionment. On the 10th day of January, 1896, the Board of Estimate and Apportionment duly appropriated the funds necessary for con­ struction. It is expected that the work of laying the foundations will commence as soon as the frost is out of the ground in the spring. The new extension will consist of a wing on the east side, concealing the boiler house, and having a front towards Fifth Avenue.

CATALOGUES AND LABELS. All the catalogues of paintings and sculptures have been made anew, and brought down to date. In addition to these the five following new hand-books have been made : The Loan Collection of Paintings, illustrative of Early American Art. The Garland Collection of Chinese Porcelain (illustrated). The Stone Sculptures of the Cesnola Cyprus Collection. The Terracottas of the Cesnola Cyprus Collection. The Pottery of the Cesnola Cyprus Collection. Other catalogues are in course of preparation, and will appear as speedily as possible. A large number of labels have been prepared, and some thousands of objects have been labeled, the work going steadily forward. In connection with the cataloguing, several collections also have been provided with new numbers, these objects being upwards of 7,000, exclusive of the Department of Painting.

LOAN COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS ILLUSTRATIVE OF EARLY AMERICAN ART. In pursuance of a plan set forth in a circular printed in the Report for 1894, a Loan Collection of Paintings and Miniatures i7

illustrative of Early American Art, was opened to the public view last November. The collection fills Gallery No. 2, besides a portion of Gallery No. 3. This is beyond comparison the most comprehensive and representative collection of its kind ever brought together ; and it has awakened a corresponding interest in the public mind, besides receiving the special attention of artists and historians. Fullest thanks are due to the lenders, among whom are some of our greatest civic and ecclesiastical corporations. Although the cost of this exhibition has been a very heavy drain upon the Museum treasury, the Trustees by no means regret the outlay. The catalogue of this collection is in continued demand, both at home and abroad.

OTHER LOANS.

Recent loans received by the Museum have not been numerous. A valuable loan of antique silver was received from Mr. E. Holbrook, and another from Mr. H. G. Marquand. A collection of Oriental textile fabrics and other objects, was loaned by Mr. D. G. Kelekian. A very important loan, which will be placed on exhibition next May, has been received from Mr. Baxter, of Florence, Italy, comprising a collection of ancient Etruscan sepulchral urns, terracottas, pottery, bronzes, amber, etc., many of the objects bearing Etruscan inscriptions.

LIBRARY.

The number of books in the Library on the 31st day of December, 1895, was as follows :—

NEEDS OF THE MUSEUM.

The action of the Trustees in closing the schools for elemen­ tary instruction is more and more clearly demonstrated to have been wise and salutary. In localities where there is lack of elementary instruction in art, a reasonable ground exists for con­ ducting schools in connection with museums and art galleries. There is no such necessity in New York. This city is abun­ dantly supplied with efficient and well-appointed schools of art; a condition which leaves no reason for the diversion of the funds and activities of the Museum from the enlargement of its col­ lections. The whole effort of the Trustees should now be directed to the acquisition of the best examples of ancient and modern art. To this end the Trustees appeal to the generous public for funds, to be expended at their discretion, for the purchase of such valuable objects as from time to time are offered to them. For example, recent excavations of ancient Etrus­ can tombs have brought to light many valuable objects. If the Museum had only a moderate purchasing fund it could be advantageously utilized in the acquisition of recent finds.

RICHARD M. HUNT. The Trustees cannot conclude this report without express­ ing their deep and heartfelt regret at the loss sustained by them and by all friends of this institution, in the death of Mr. Richard Morris Hunt, a Trustee of the Museum from its incorporation. His great efficiency and activity have left their impress upon all. During the earlier years of the Museum especially, his gifts and loans made a considerable portion of its exhibits. His broad and cultivated taste, his attractive personality, his untiring energy and his enthusiasm for art, made him a valued colleague, whose loss will be greatly felt. It is gratifying to record that his last important work was a finished plan for the new wing of the Museum building soon to be erected, together with a general plan for completing, in a similar style of architecture, the entire 19 edifice that will eventually cover the whole area appropriated for the occupancy of the Museum. An important dated Greek inscription, from Syria. The collection formerly loaned by S. T. Baxter, of Florence, Italy, comprising ancient Etruscan, Roman and Longobardic articles in gold, silver, and precious stones. Two European parade swords, and one dagger, of exquisite workmanship. A bronze reproduction of an ancient Pompeian bronze vase. The following were purchased by the Art Committee for the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection : " The Sun Beam," by Christophe Bisschop. "Canal in Holland," by Jacques Maris. "Dutch Interior, with Figure," by Albert Neuhuijs. It should here be noted that the valuable collection of Mexican Antiquities, heretofore loaned by the Hon. Louis Petich, is now, by a new agreement, deposited in the Museum for an indefinite period; the loan, however, to terminate on a year's notice from the party desiring its termination. 23

ARTICLE VI.

Of Benefactors, Patrons and Fellows.

Section i. The contribution or devise of fifty thousand dollars or more at any one time to the funds of the Museum, or of objects of art to its Collections to the value of twice the said amount, shall entitle the donor to be declared a Benefactor of the Museum by the Board of Trustees. Sec. 2. The contribution of five thousand dollars to the funds of the Museum shall entitle the person giving the same to be elected a Patron or Fellow in Perpetuity of the Museum. Such person shall have a Patron's or Fellow's right in Perpetuity for each sum of five thousand dollars so contributed, with the privilege of appointing the successor in such Patron's or Fellow's right in Perpetuity. Sec. j. No future appointment of a successor shall be valid, unless the same shall be in writing, endorsed on or attached to the certificate, or by last will and testament. Should neither of these conditions be complied with, the Executors or Administra­ tors may nominate a successor subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees. Sec. 4. The contribution of one thousand dollars shall entitle the person giving the same to be elected a Fellow for life. Patrons and Fellows shall be elected by the Trustees. Sec. j. Any person may be elected by the Trustees to either of the above degrees, who shall have given to the Museum Books or Works of Art, which shall have been accepted by the Execu­ tive Committee, to the value of twice the amount in money requisite to his admission to the same degree, and the President and Secretary shall issue diplomas accordingly, under the seal of the Museum. See. 6. The Trustees may also elect Honorary Fellows of the Museum in their discretion. ANNUAL MEMBERS elected by the Trustees are entitled to the following privileges :

First.—A ticket admitting the Member and his family, and any non-resident friends visiting them, to the Museum on the two days of each week, namely: Monday and Friday, when the Museum is not open free to the public.

Second.—Ten complimentary tickets a year for distribution, each of which admits the bearer once on either Monday or Fri­ day. These tickets must bear the signature of the Member.

Third.—Invitations to all the Receptions given by the Trustees at the Museum.

Pourlh.—Tickets to all Lectures given under the auspices of the Trustees, either at the Museum or elsewhere.

Fifth.—A copy of the Annual Report.

Sixth.—A set of all Hand-books published by the Museum.

Seventh.— The privilege of becoming a Fellow of the Museum.

The Annual Fee is Ten Dollars, and no further liability is attached to the Annual membership. Annual Members are elected on the first of each quarter, to wit: January, April, July and October, and checks may be drawn to the order of The Met­ ropolitan Museum of Art
