Yet, even for ohn Mix Stanley (1814 - 1872) was enthusiasts of American art and the West, a major figure in nineteenth-century Stanley is relatively unknown.     GEORGE CATLIN: EXPLORER AND PAINTER OF THE MANDAN AMY TRUJILLO In a time when the majority of the United States' citizens viewed the Native American tribes as savages and a nuisance, George Catlin managed to capture a realistic view of these peoples. Catlin's art is probably the most receptive of the early Native American painters. His paintings demonstrated an understanding and even an appreciation of the native people. In 1837, few people in or outside of the United States had a clear picture of what the tribes of the Plains and the Rocky Mountains looked like. The copious amount of paintings, sketches and materials that Catlin brought back with him give some of the best, and in many cases, the only information about the tribes before the serious interference of Euro-American settlers and the government. For the majority of his adult life, Catlin traveled in the Louisiana Purchase Territory documenting the people through his paintings and his writing. Still, there is no doubt that Catlin believed that the Native Americans were doomed. One of the main motives behind Catlin's work was to document these people before they disappeared or the United Stated government changed their way of life forever. In many ways, Catlin was the first ethnographer of the native peoples and one of the most successful in capturing the tribes before outside interference.' He was willing to paint and describe the Indians accurately. He did not give in to the stereotype of portraying the tribes as bloodthirsty savages. Through his art he attempted to show the American people the reality of the tribes, both good and bad, and doing this became his life's work.

By understanding the complex evolution of historic perspectives, we gain a better understanding of how to remedy the situation and create a more balanced presentation of history. This thesis will analyze past Euro-American perceptions of American Indians and how this point of view has affected the interpretation of American Indian history at historic sites and museums. Through examining past and present presentations of the American Indian, this thesis will identify several tools that historic sites can use to break away from biased and outdated notions of America’s history. MCLAIRD From the earliest European discoveries, rumors of "white Indi- ans" have circulated in America. Always to the west of settled areas, there were supposed to be people who possessed advanced customs and technology, unlike the "uncivilized savages" the frontiersmen had already met and fought. Sometimes these claims were buttressed by "eyewitness accounts" of meetings with bearded, light-skinned Indians, some of whom possessed Bibles.' While such curious tales plainly fascinated settlers, politi- cal significance was often attached to them as well. John Dee and 1. Bernard De Voto, The Course of Empire (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1952), pp. 68-73, 470-71, contains a good discussion of rumors and "evidence" of reported "white Indians" assumed to he descendants of "Prince Madoc of Wales," who sup- posedly came to America in A.D. 1170. A detailed listing of meetings between fron- tiersmen and "white Indians" is included in Zella Armstrong's uncritical account of the Madoc theory entitled Who Discovered America?: The Amazing Story of Madoc (Chattanooga, Tenn.: Lookout Publishing Co., 1950). She mentions remnants of an old tattered book among the Indians (p. 122).     WESTERN ART GALLERY The Brinton Museum is located on the historic Quarter Circle A Ranch in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. Bradford Brinton purchased the ranch headquarters in 1923 from the Scotsman William Moncreiffe and used the Ranch House at the Quarter Circle A as a vacation home, spending several months each year in Big Horn. An avid collector of fine art, American Indian artifacts, firearms, and books, Bradford Brinton filled his home with fine and beautiful items. He was personal friends with many artists, such as Ed Borein, Hans Kleiber and Bill Gol- lings, whose art decorated the house. He also collected works by Frederic Re- mington, Charles M. Russell and Winold Reiss. Several of these important works of art are now on exhibit in The Brinton’s Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building in the Ted and Katie Meredith Western Gallery of Art. Bradford and his sister, Helen Brinton, left an enduring legacy of the golden era of an early 20th Century gentleman’s working ranch. The Wild West had been tamed, the vast rangelands fenced, and motorized vehicles were replacing horses. Americans were clinging to the images of hardy cowboys, noble Indians, and untamed land filled with birds and wild beasts. Bradford and Helen Brinton have helped preserve the feel- ing of the West at that time for all of us to enjoy today.
