We studied 60 slides with 107 specimens of 10 species of the genus Ricinus (De Geer, 1778). The collection includes lectotype specimens of Ricinus ivanovi Blagoveshtchensky, 1951 and of Ricinus tugarinovi Blagoveshtchensky, 1951. We registered Ricinus elongatus Olfers, 1816 ex Turdus ruficollis, R. ivanovi ex Leucosticte tephrocotis and Ricinus serratus (Durrant, 1906) ex Calandrella acutirostris and Calandrel- la cheleensis which were not included in Price’s world checklist. New records for Russia are R. elongatus ex Turdus ruficollis; Ricinus fringillae De Geer, 1778 ex Emberiza aureola, Emberiza leucocephalos, Emberiza rustica, Passer montanus and Prunella modularis; Ricinus rubeculae De Geer, 1778 ex Erithacus rubecula and Luscinia svecica; Ricinus serratus (Durrant, 1906) ex Alauda arvensis. New records for Kyrgyzstan are R. fringillae ex E. leucocephalos and ex Fringilla coelebs. -

Durkin Brown-headed cowbirds are brood parasites and come in direct contact with a greater number of bird species than non-brood-parasitic birds. The male and female sub populations as well as the young and older male subpopulations engage in different behaviors that could affect chewing louse communities. 401 brown-headed cowbirds collected from northern Michigan were examined for chewing lice. Chewing louse prevalence, intensity and species richness were compared between male and female cowbirds. -

The sucking and chewing lice (Phthiraptera) are hemimetabolous insects that spend their entire lives on the bodies of their hosts. Fleas (Siphonaptera), on the other hand, are holometabolous. The diversity of these ectoparasites is limited by the diversity of the birds and mammals available as hosts. Determining the community diversity of lice and fleas is essential to understanding ecological structure and interactions, yet offers a number of challenges to the ectoparasitologist. The chapter explores medical and veterinary importance of lice and fleas. They are more likely to be considered detrimental parasites, perhaps even a threat to conservation efforts by their very presence or by the disease agents they transmit. Perez-Osorio emphasized the importance of a more objective approach to conservation strategies by abandoning overemphasis on charismatic fauna and setting priorities in ecological management of wider biodiversity issues. When most people see a bird or mammal, they don’t look beneath the feathers or hair of that animal to see what is hidden. They see the animal at its face value, and seldom appreciate the diversity of life before them. The animal is typically a mobile menagerie, infested by external parasites and their body laden with internal parasites and pathogens. -

Light Committee Members, Gary Voelker Michelle Lawing Head of Department, Michael Masser December 2016 Major Subject: Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Copyright 2016 Oona Mariko Takano ABSTRACT Parasitic chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) of birds are found everywhere their avian hosts are distributed, and their host relationships and taxonomy have been well studied in many regions. Lice have obligate parasitic relationships with their hosts (entire life cycle is carried out on the host body) and generally undergo vertical transmission across host generations. These biological traits of lice make them excellent model systems for exploring host-parasite co-evolution. Compared with Europe and the Americas, the ectoparasite fauna of Sub-Saharan African birds is poorly understood despite the avian fauna being relatively well-known. Recent field expeditions exploring the avian diversity in South Africa, Benin, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo allow an opportunity to obtain louse specimens from across Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of this study was to investigate avian louse host associations and genetic diversity to increase our understanding of southern African parasite biodiversity, as well as to use molecular phylogenetic methods to examine potential broad biogeographic patterns in lice across Sub-Saharan Africa. From 1105 South African bird individuals and 170 species examined for lice, a total of 104 new louse-host associations were observed. -
