Light Committee Members, Gary Voelker Michelle Lawing Head of Department, Michael Masser December 2016 Major Subject: Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Copyright 2016 Oona Mariko Takano ABSTRACT Parasitic chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) of birds are found everywhere their avian hosts are distributed, and their host relationships and taxonomy have been well studied in many regions. Lice have obligate parasitic relationships with their hosts (entire life cycle is carried out on the host body) and generally undergo vertical transmission across host generations. These biological traits of lice make them excellent model systems for exploring host-parasite co-evolution. Compared with Europe and the Americas, the ectoparasite fauna of Sub-Saharan African birds is poorly understood despite the avian fauna being relatively well-known. Recent field expeditions exploring the avian diversity in South Africa, Benin, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo allow an opportunity to obtain louse specimens from across Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of this study was to investigate avian louse host associations and genetic diversity to increase our understanding of southern African parasite biodiversity, as well as to use molecular phylogenetic methods to examine potential broad biogeographic patterns in lice across Sub-Saharan Africa. From 1105 South African bird individuals and 170 species examined for lice, a total of 104 new louse-host associations were observed. Portions of the mitochondrial COI and nuclear EF-1α genes were amplified to observe phylogenetic relationships of southern African lice and investigate potential new species. The phylogenetic results gave strong support for multiple louse genera, and 26 genetically unique lineages were found, which may represent new louse species. Examining biogeographic patterns in parasitic lice across the entire region of Sub- ii Saharan Africa indicated that lice tend to follow host distributions rather than grouping by geographic region. Several promising louse taxa were identified as candidates for future phylogenetic and biogeographic studies investigating Sub-Saharan African chewing lice. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are many people who have helped me with this thesis, and I am grateful for all of their various forms of support. The geographical range of the typically host-specific species of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) is often assumed to be similar to that of their hosts. We tested this assumption by reviewing the published records of twelve species of chewing lice parasitizing wild and domestic chicken, one of few bird species that occurs globally. We found that of the twelve species reviewed, eight appear to occur throughout the range of the host. This includes all the species considered to be native to wild chicken, except Oxylipeurus dentatus (Sugimoto, 1934). This species has only been reported from the native range of wild chicken in Southeast Asia and from parts of Central America and the Caribbean, where the host is introduced.

For this aim, 31 bird specimens belonging to 23 bird species which were injured or died were examined for the louse infestation. Firstly, the feathers of each bird were inspected macroscopically, all observed louse specimens were collected and then the examined birds were treated with a synthetic pyrethroid spray (Biyo avispray-Biyoteknik®). The collected lice were placed into the tubes with 70% alcohol and mounted on slides with Canada balsam after being cleared in KOH 10%. Then the collected chewing lice were identified under the light microscobe. Eleven out of totally 31 (35.48%) birds were found to be infested with at least one chewing louse species. Eighteen lice species were found belonging to 16 genera on infested birds. Thirteen of 18 lice species; Actornithophilus piceus piceus (Denny, 1842); Anaticola phoenicopteri (Coincide, 1859); Anatoecus pygaspis (Nitzsch, 1866); Colpocephalum heterosoma Piaget, 1880; C. polonum Eichler and Zlotorzycka, 1971; Fulicoffula lurida (Nitzsch, 1818); Incidifrons fulicia (Linnaeus, 1758); Meromenopon meropis Clay ve Meinertzhagen, 1941; Meropoecus meropis (Denny, 1842); Pseudomenopon pilosum (Scopoli, 1763); Rallicola fulicia (Denny, 1842); Saemundssonia lari Fabricius, O, 1780), and Trinoton femoratum Piaget, 1889 have been recorded from Turkey for the first time.

Grossi 0 Abstract Over 19 years chewing lice data from Canada geese and mallards were collected. From Canada geese (n=300) 48,669 lice were collected, including Anaticola anseris, Anatoecus dentatus, Anatoecus penicillatus, Ciconiphilus pectiniventris, Ornithobius goniopleurus, and Trinoton anserinum. The prevalence of all lice on Canada geese was 92.3% and the mean intensity was 175.6 lice per bird. From mallards (n=269) 6,986 lice were collected which included: Anaticola crassicornis, A. dentatus, Holomenopon leucoxanthum, Holomenopon maxbeieri and Trinoton querquedulae. The prevalence of lice on mallards was 55.4% and the mean intensity was 42.0 lice per bird. Based on CO1, A. dentatus and Anatoecus icterodes were synonymised as A. dentatus. Two species were recorded on Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771); A. sylvaticus (Linnaeus, 1758); Bos taurus Linnaeus, 1758; and Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758 per host species. On the remaining 13 host species, one Anoplura species was collected. The recorded species were collected from 17 localities covering 17 fields of 10 × 10 km on the UTM grid of Croatia. Durkin Brown-headed cowbirds are brood parasites and come in direct contact with a greater number of bird species than non-brood-parasitic birds. The male and female sub populations as well as the young and older male subpopulations engage in different behaviors that could affect chewing louse communities. 401 brown-headed cowbirds collected from northern Michigan were examined for chewing lice. Chewing louse prevalence, intensity and species richness were compared between male and female cowbirds.
