The Mayor’s vision for London is to deliver affordable public transport, healthier streets to encourage walking and cycling, and infrastructure that makes London fit for the future; a transport system that is the envy of the world. It’s a challenge I am excited to take up.

My political career, prior to City Hall was shaped in, and by, London and my home borough of Lewisham. Having served for six years as a local councillor and eight years as the Member of Parliament for Lewisham East, I believe I have the skills and knowledge to make a positive difference to the lives of Londoners.

As Lewisham’s Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration between 2006 and 2010, I have had direct experience of helping to lead a complex organisation, navigating the officer/elected member interface and overseeing the delivery of a sizeable capital programme.

Having served as Chair of London’s leading economic development company Greater London Enterprise and as a member of both London Council’s Transport and Environment Committee and the Thames Gateway London Partnership, I have a strategic understanding of the transport challenges facing London. I know how London’s transport system has a direct impact upon the quality of life of millions of Londoners as well as their life chances. I want to ensure that investment in London’s transport has a positive effect on our environment, our economy and our health.

My priorities as Deputy Mayor for Transport and, I hope, as Deputy Chair of will be not only to deliver improvements to our streets and public transport network but also to ensure prudent financial management of a public body relied upon by millions - the timely and cost- effective delivery of the Mayor’s manifesto demands nothing less.

I have inherited a visionary and ambitious Mayor’s Transport Strategy (MTS) and this, combined with the Mayor’s manifesto, gives me some clear priorities to progress. The MTS sets challenging targets – not least the 80 per cent walking, cycling and public transport target – and as Deputy Chair of TfL I need to ensure the whole organisation understands, and works towards, these aspirations.

The delivery of the Elizabeth Line, the expansion of safe cycling routes, the roll out of the Ultra Low Emission Zone are just some of the major initiatives I will be focussed on in the coming months and years. I am keen that London remains a city which welcomes innovation and I want to ensure that TfL responds positively to emerging technologies and the changing ways in which we live our lives. I also want to see the organisation play its part in delivering the affordable housing London needs - using its land assets and in opening up development in opportunity areas.

I will be forensic in holding TfL to account and will be accessible and responsive to assembly members and wider stakeholders.

My intention is to put all of my time and energy into this role and I would be grateful to the Committee for its endorsement.
