Due to its size, Lake Van is historically referred to as sea. With this feature, it has a positive impact on the military and economic life of the region with respect to maritime transport and marine products. In the medieval and early modern era, shipyards were built in Ahlat and Van to conduct navigation in the lake. The settlements on the lake shore have harbors since ancient times. Ahlat, Van and Tatvan are important port cities; and there are small harbors in Ercis, Adilcevaz and Vastan. Various shipping and commercial

In spite of the fact that more pragmatic revolutionaries attempted to convince the Armenian community that the Balkan model would not work for the Armenians because of demographic and geopolitical differences, the Armenian struggle for inde- pendence from the Ottoman Empire was waged in a way that was similar to the Balkan model. There is strong reason to believe that if the Armenians had had stron- ger British and Russian backing and constituted a slightly higher percentage of the population in the region of Eastern Anatolia that an independent Armenia would have emerged in Eastern Anatolia and Cilicia much in the same manner that an independent Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro emerged in the Balkans.

  • The World War and the Turco-Armenian Question
THE WORLD WAR AND THE TURCO-ARMENIAN QUESTION BY AHMED RUSTEM BEY Formerly Turkish Ambassador in Washington Berne 1918 translated by Stephen Cambron PERSONAL EXPLANATION OF THE AUTHOR The son of a Pole, who having been harbored in Turkey after the Hungarian abortive Revolution of 1848, served this country as an officer and was the object of government favors till his death, I was infeoffed to the Turkish people as much out of thankfulness as because of their numerous, amiable qualities. In writing this book intended to defend turkey against the Western public opinion concerning the Turco-Armenian question, I have only given way to my grateful feelings towards the country where I was born and which made me, in my turn, the object of her benevolence. These feelings expressed themselves by acts of indubitable loyalty and there is they reason why I fought twice in duel to maintain her honor and served her as a volunteer during the Turco-Greek War. It is after having ended my career and assured a long time ago of the kind feelings of the Ottoman Government and of my Turkish fellowmen’s that I publish this work under my name. Thereby I mean to say that I am only obeying my love towards the country. As to the degree of conviction with which I put my pen to her service in this discussion, where the question is to prove that Turkey is not so guilty as report goes and in which passions are roused to the utmost is sufficiently fixed by my signing this defense in which I speak the plain truth to the Armenian committees and the Entente.

  • About Armenia and Armenians1
ABOUT ARMENIA AND ARMENIANS OF WESTERN ARMENIA An historic reference 1. The Motherland of the Armenians – Armenia including the Armenian Highland and adjacent territories is located between Asia Minor, the Black Sea, the basin of the Kur River, the Iranian plateau and Mesopotamia, covering a total area of 400 000 square kilometers. 2. In spiritual perceptions of a number of peoples of Ancient World the Armenian Highland was perceived as a sacred land. According to the Bible, Sumerian, Babylonian and other sources it was the cradle of mankind and, after the creation, the symbols of wisdom and immortality were kept there. After the flood, this highland became the country of the renewal of mankind where God established Eternal covenant with humankind. 3. The traces of human settlements here date back to the early period of the Paleolithic epoch. A number of very important achievements in human history were registered in the Armenian Highland. Particularly, for the first time in the world, transition from wild and merely consumer way of life to agriculture and cattle-breeding (civilized and productive economy) took place in the 10 th millennium B.C. in the south (the archeological site of Shanidar) of the Armenian Highland. 4. First temples were built in the Armenian Highland (the 9 th millennium B.C.), as well as the earliest metallurgy originated and for the first time horses were domesticated here... 5. The Armenian people has Indo-European origins and until the end of the 4 th millennium B.C., it is still constituted a part of the main body of the Indo-European community which lived in the Indo- European proto-homeland – in eastern regions of Asia Minor, the Armenian Highland, Northern Mesopotamia and north-western part of the Iranian plateau.
