The Turkish Diaspora in Europe Integration, Migration, and Politics
GETTY GEBERT IMAGES/ANDREAS The Turkish Diaspora in Europe Integration, Migration, and Politics By Max Hoffman, Alan Makovsky, and Michael Werz December 2020 WWW.AMERICANPROGRESS.ORG Contents 1 Introduction and summary 4 Key findings 9 Detailed findings and country analyses 34 Conclusion 37 About the authors and acknowledgments 38 Appendix: Citizenship laws and migration history in brief 44 Endnotes Introduction and summary More than 5 million people of Turkish descent live in Europe outside Turkey itself, a human connection that has bound Turkey and the wider European community together since large-scale migration began in the 1960s.1 The questions of immigra- tion, citizenship, integration, assimilation, and social exchange sparked by this migra- tion and the establishment of permanent Turkish diaspora communities in Europe have long been politically sensitive. Conservative and far-right parties in Europe have seized upon issues of migration and cultural diversity, often engaging in fearmonger- ing about immigrant communities and playing upon some Europeans’ anxiety about rapid demographic change. Relations between the European Union—as well as many of its constituent member states—and Turkey have deteriorated dramatically in recent years. And since 2014, Turks abroad, in Europe and elsewhere around the world, have been able to vote in Turkish elections, leading to active campaigning by some Turkish leaders in European countries. For these and several other reasons, political and aca- demic interest in the Turkish diaspora and its interactions -

Turkish and Kurdish Influences the Arabic Dialects of Anatolia
Türk Dilleri Araştırmaları, 21.1 (2011): 83-94 Turkish and Kurdish influences the Arabic Dialects of Anatolia Otto Jastrow* (Tallinn) Özet: Anadolu Arapçası, ayrı lehçeler (Sprachinseln) biçiminde ortaya çıkar. This feld is characterized by thermal and mineralized springs and Turkey travertine. The temperature of the thermal water is 36 °C, whereas that of the mineral- Full list of author information ized spring in the area is approximately 11 °C. The Na–HCO –Cl-type thermal water has is available at the end of the 3 article a pH value of 6.83 and an EC value of 5731 µS/cm. The aim of this study is to character- ize the geothermal system by using geological, geophysical, and hydrogeochemical data and to determine its hydrochemical properties. A conceptual hydrogeological model is developed for the hydrogeological fow system in the ŞGF. According to the hydrogeological conceptual model created by geological, geophysical, and hydrogeo- chemical studies, the reservoir comprises volcanogenic sandstone and volcanic rocks. The cap rock for the geothermal system is composed of turbiditic deposits consisting of mudstone–siltstone–sandstone alternations. An increase in the geothermal gradient is mainly due to Pleistocene volcanic activity in the feld. The isotopic values of thermal water (δ18O, δ2H, δ3H) indicate a deeply circulating meteoric origin. -

Işgal Döneminde Izmir Metropoliti Hrisostomos (1919–1922)
Trakya Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi 31 Haziran 2009 Cilt 11 Sayı 1 (31-50) İŞGAL DÖNEMİNDE İZMİR METROPOLİTİ HRİSOSTOMOS (1919–1922) Yrd. Doç. Dr. Bülent ATALAY* ÖZET Yunanistan, Mondros Mütarekesi’ne rağmen İzmir’i işgal etti. Asıl amaç İzmir’in Yunanistan’a bağlanmasını sağlamaktı. Anahtar Kelime: Metropolit, Hrisostomos, İzmir, Millî Mücadele IZMIR ARCHBISHOP HRISOSTOMOS DURING THE INVASION (1919-1922) ABSTRACT Greece occupied lamis despite the Mondros Agreement. The activities of Izmir Archbishop Hrisostomos became effective on the invasion. Hrisostomos clamied that Turks murdered Christians. In order to prove this claim, he wrote o book named “Turks’ Attacks against Christions” and distributed it to the representations of the allied powers. This paper examines the emigration and immigration system of Turkey and its cor- related visions of development. For that purpose, the paper will study the major characteristics and dynamics of emigration from Turkey into Europe (in particular Germany and the Nether- lands), and the major impact on host societies as well as on Turkey. The analysis gives particular attention to the extent to which Turkish emigration and the Turkish Diaspora have influenced economic, political and social development in Turkey. In a similar manner, we will examine the evolving nature of immigration into Turkey. Finally, we give attention to the place of these issues in EU–Turkish relations. The parallel development of Turkish migrants becoming per- manent residents in Europe and of Turkey receiving new – potentially permanent – migrants from its surrounding region are discussed with a close look at what kind of impact this has on Turkey itself. -

Nationalism and population politics in the late Ottoman Empire How did the Turkish nation-formation process develop from the nineteenth into the twentieth century? This chapter will give an account of the eastern provinces, in particular Diyarbekir province, from an anthropological and sociological perspective. It will then address how the process of nation formation in the Ottoman Empire shifted from a relatively inclusive Ottoman patriotism to a relatively exclusive Turkish ethnic nationalism. -

Geosynclinal sediments within the area were redated. Results of field study indicate a massive plate of metamorphic rocks and crystal I ine limestones was thrust southward over geosynclinal sediments. These in turn were thrust over the southern marginal basin deposits.
