1966 Ferrari 275GTB/6C B e r l i n e t t a Private Portfolio No. 089 Comprehensive restoration by top Italian specialists Desirable factory six carburettor, long nose, Chassis no. 08557GT torque tube specification Handsome original colour scheme Ferrari Classiche certified Engine no. 08557GT Successor to the 250 Series and first seen in 1964, the Ferrari 275 embodied a number of technical innovations. While the chassis of the 275GTB berlinetta and 275GTS convertible followed Ferrari’s established practice, being a multi-tubular frame tied together by oval main tubes, for the first time on a road-going Ferrari Price £630,000 there was independent rear suspension, the latter employing a double wishbone and coil-spring arrangement similar to that of the 250LM sports- r a c e r. Also new was the rear- mounted five-speed transaxle combining the gearbox and differential - the former now of the a l l -syn chromesh type. Enlarged to 3.3 litres, the Colombo-d e s i g n e d 6 0 - degree V12 engine produced 280bhp at 7,600rpm (rising to 300bhp if six carburettors were fitted). Arguably Ferrari’s definitive front- engined berlinetta, the Pininfarina- styled 275GTB is a classic of sports car design: long, penetrating nose; 1 raked, high waisted cabin and short, 1 Private Portfolio No. 089 1966 Ferrari 275GTB/6C Berlinetta subtly bespoilered tail, the overall lines enhanced by air outlets in the flanks reminiscent of a shark’s gills and purposeful quad exhausts. The 275GTB was aimed at Ferrari’s most performance minded clients, a racer-on- the-road which completed the Maranello company’s model range alongside the luxurious, limited production 500 Superfast and the all-round granturismo 330GT series. Some 450 examples of the 275GTB were built following the model’s 1964 Paris Salon debut until replaced by the almost identical looking 275GTB/4 four cam version in 1966, and today the 275GTB in its various incarnations is one of the models most prized by Ferrari collectors. Briefly, the earliest 275GTBs had what is retrospectively known as ‘short nose’ bodywork, the frontal treatment not dissimilar to the 250LM. Later versions received a longer nose to reduce front end lift and the driveshaft was enclosed in a torque tube to counter vibrations which sometimes developed over time due to poor alignment. The standard 275GTB, whether short or long nose, was built with steel bodywork and a three carburettor engine, but clients could request an aluminium body and/ or six carburettor set-up if they preferred. A handful of cars were also built for racing known as the GTB/C (‘C’ for Competizione), the long nose versions of this model known as ‘series 2’. The car we offer is a late production 2 7 5 G TB with steel bodywork, torque tube and a factory six carburettor engine, hence the ‘6C’ model suffix. It was delivered new through Italauto of La u s a n n e , Switzerland in May 1966 finished in Rosso Rubino (106-R-12) with beige leather (VM 3309). Following long- term Swiss ownership, 1972-2004, it was restored in Italy, 2005-2006, with Tony Franco of Maranello responsible for the mechanics, Brandoli the coachwork and Luppi 2 the interior. The original factory Private Portfolio No. 089 1966 Ferrari 275GTB/6C Berlinetta colour combination has been respected and the car was certified by Ferrari Classiche upon completion, the relevant folder accompanying the car, together with a photographic record of the restoration. A second set of wheels, handsome and rare outer laced 15” Borranis as fitted to the GTB/C model, are currently fitted and the original Campagnolo alloys are included. Acquired by the current British owner in 2007 and subsequently entrusted to Carrozzeria Autosport for further detailing at a cost of some €10,000, chassis ‘08557GT’ has covered only nominal mileage since its rebuild. UK registered and still in ‘factory fresh’ condition, this attractively specified Ferrari 275GTB/6C is ready for use in historic events such as the Tour Auto or concours d’elegance, but would be equally suitable for enjoyment as one of the ultimate classic road cars.
