f NCDL is an Internet-based library hosted by OverDrive. f Launched in November 2005. Sponsored by the NCPL Director's Association. f There are currently 14 member libraries. Several new libraries in 2007! f Consortium members build a custom collection for your patrons. f All formats include accessibility features for the visually impaired. f Patrons may easily borrow and download titles using their library card. f Real-time reports track circulation and other performance data online.

NCDL is offering eBooks, Audio Books, Music, and Video! All formats are available from one easy to use site.

One Copy – One Patron f The consortium purchases and owns a title. f When a patron checks out a title, it is removed from circulation. f Patrons may request a checked out title by placing a hold.

Maximum Access f Annual subscription. f One copy is available for unlimited simultaneous checkouts. f Titles will always be available for your patrons. f Holds are never necessary. f Available for Audio Books and Video.

STEP ONE: Download and install free digital media software. STEP TWO: Browse the NCDL collection and add titles to an eBookBag. STEP THREE: Checkout is easy with a valid library card. STEP FOUR: Download the checked out title(s) to a personal computer. STEP FIVE: Enjoy downloaded titles on laptops, computers, Pocket PCs, PDAs, Smartphones, and MP3 players. Many audio titles can be burned to CD. STEP SIX: At the end of the loan period a downloaded title automatically expires.

To download digital titles, a patron will need: f A valid library card. f Free digital media software. f Access to the Internet.

Internet access is needed to browse, checkout, and download titles. After download, enjoy a digital title without being connected to the Internet.

OverDrive utilizes Windows DRM (Digital Rights Management) Protection to help block unlawful file sharing. This technology can be part of installing software, downloading a title, and / or registering a computer or device.

Our publishers also set digital rights for each title. f These rights describe the permissions for a title after download. f Examples include: Burn to CD, transfer to a portable device, copy / paste, and print. f ‘Digital Rights Information’ is provided for each title on NCDL.

f Browse and search for digital titles. f Click on a title image to view a short description, author information, format, and digital rights information. f Next, add selections to the eBookBag. f If a title is already checked out, a patron may place a hold and receive an email when the title is available.

f After selecting titles, click on the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ link. f Enter library card number, without spaces. f After the card is verified, titles are ready for download.

f The Download Page features a link to install the free digital media software. f Click on the ‘Download’ button to begin downloading the title. f Download a checked out title at a later time by clicking on ‘My NCDL Account’.

Enjoy downloaded titles on laptops, computers, Pocket PCs, PDAs, Smartphones, and MP3 players. Many audio titles can be burned to CD.

f NCDL has set your lending period for 7 days. f When a title is due, it will automatically expire and be checked in. f After a title has expired, it will remain on the patron's PC, but can no longer be opened. f Patrons will never accrue late fees with downloaded titles.

Play OverDrive Audio Books, Music, and Video on PCs. f All you need are speakers or headphones. Burn to CD: f After download, many titles can be burned to a regular audio CD. Transfer to a portable player: f OverDrive Media Console also features a ‘Transfer Wizard’ for easy transfer to a compatible device.

f Device must play DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. f Audio books: The device must support a bit rate of 32kbps. f Music: The device must support the bit rate of 64kbps.

No. f Unfortunately the iPod does not support DRM-protected Windows Media (WMA) files, the format in which our audio titles are delivered. We are hopeful that Apple and Microsoft® can reach an agreement that would enable WMA support on the iPod.

Every video title includes two download options: f Mobile: Optimized for viewing on supported mobile devices. f Standard: Optimized for viewing on a PC or any viewing device which can be connected to the PC (such as a TV).

f Public Performance Permitted: Titles with this notation are licensed for viewing with a group in a public place, such as a classroom or church setting. f Home Use: Titles without the “public performance” designation are licensed for home and personal use only.

Adobe eBooks f Adobe eBooks are text-based titles in PDF format which are read using Adobe Reader. f For use on PCs and Macs. f Version 6.0.1 or higher required. f Version 7.0 recommended.

f Adobe eBooks are stored in File > Digital Editions > My Digital Editions (version 7.x). f Double click an eBook to begin reading. f Adobe eBooks checked out from the library will appear with a clock symbol in the upper right corner. f Use the thumbnail view to display cover images of eBooks. Or, switch to the details view to sort by title, author, category, or date last accessed. f Organize an eBook collection by default categories and create new categories.

Search: Find a word or phrase. Read Out Loud: Adobe Reader can read the book out loud if the feature is licensed / enabled for that title. This is a text-to-speech machine reader (View > Read Out Loud.) Comments: Add comments and highlights to your eBooks. To display the Commenting Tools, click on the ‘Comment and Markup’ button on the Tasks Toolbar (version 7.x).
