Sponsored by the NCPL Director's Association. f There are currently 14 member libraries. Several new libraries in 2007! f Consortium members build a custom collection for your patrons. f All formats include accessibility features for the visually impaired. f Patrons may easily borrow and download titles using their library card. f Real-time reports track circulation and other performance data online. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. One Copy – One Patron f The consortium purchases and owns a title. f When a patron checks out a title, it is removed from circulation. f Patrons may request a checked out title by placing a hold. Maximum Access f Annual subscription. f One copy is available for unlimited simultaneous checkouts. f Titles will always be available for your patrons. f Holds are never necessary. f Available for Audio Books and Video. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. Version 04302007 5 How Does North Carolina Digital Library Work? STEP ONE: Download and install free digital media software. STEP TWO: Browse the NCDL collection and add titles to an eBookBag. STEP THREE: Checkout is easy with a valid library card. STEP FOUR: Download the checked out title(s) to a personal computer. STEP FIVE: Enjoy downloaded titles on laptops, computers, Pocket PCs, PDAs, Smartphones, and MP3 players. Many audio titles can be burned to CD. Version 04302007 6 Getting Started To download digital titles, a patron will need: f A valid library card. f Free digital media software. f Access to the Internet. Internet access is needed to browse, checkout, and download titles. After download, enjoy a digital title without being connected to the Internet. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. Version 04302007 7 What are Digital Rights? OverDrive utilizes Windows DRM (Digital Rights Management) Protection to help block unlawful file sharing. This technology can be part of installing software, downloading a title, and / or registering a computer or device. Our publishers also set digital rights for each title. f These rights describe the permissions for a title after download. f Examples include: Burn to CD, transfer to a portable device, copy / paste, and print. f ‘Digital Rights Information’ is provided for each title on NCDL. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. Version 04302007 13 STEP THREE: Checkout is easy with a valid library card. f After selecting titles, click on the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ link. f Enter library card number, without spaces. f After the card is verified, titles are ready for download. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. Version 04302007 14 STEP FOUR: Download the selected title(s). f The Download Page features a link to install the free digital media software. f Click on the ‘Download’ button to begin downloading the title. f Download a checked out title at a later time by clicking on ‘My NCDL Account’. ©2007 OverDrive, Inc. Burn to CD: f After download, many titles can be burned to a regular audio CD. Version 04302007 20 Can patrons use an iPod??? No. f Unfortunately the iPod does not support DRM-protected Windows Media (WMA) files, the format in which our audio titles are delivered. Version 04302007 23 Download Options for Video Every video title includes two download options: f Mobile: Optimized for viewing on supported mobile devices. f Standard: Optimized for viewing on a PC or any viewing device which can be connected to the PC (such as a TV). titles include supplemental material such as liner notes or mobile versions of the title.
