The meeting opens at 6:30 a.m. AGENDA: The situation created after the penetration of the armed forces of certain socialist countries into the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Upon listening to Comrade Nicolae Ceausescu's briefing on the very serious situation created after the penetration in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic - without the knowledge and approval of that country's Party and State bodies, of the armed forces of the URSS, the Polish People's Republic, the Hungarian People's Republic, the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the German Democratic Republic - the Executive Committee of the CC of the RCP, decides as follows: 1. The Government of the Socialist Republic of Romania shall address a note to the five socialist countries whose troops occupied Czechoslovakia and express its concern about and disapproval of this act, the fact that it does not share at all the views stated in the TASS Communiqué, alleging that a counter-revolutionary situation was obtaining in Czechoslovakia which might have justified a military intervention. 2. The Central Committees of the five parties in those socialist countries shall be informed about the fact the Central Committee of the RCP is utterly astonished and disapproves of the manner in which our Party has been informed about the decision and measures taken relative to the military intervention in Czechoslovakia. At the same time, they shall be told that the Romanian Communist Party considers the military intervention in Czechoslovakia a flagrant violation of the national sovereignty of a fraternal socialist, free and independent state, of the principles underlying the relations between the socialist countries of the unanimously recognized norms of international law and that the interference in the internal affairs of the communist party and Czechoslovak people, the armed intervention in Czechoslovakia are a heavy blow dealt to the unity of the world socialist system, to the international communist and workers' movement, to the prestige of socialism in the world. They shall also be explained the firm belief of our Party and Government that the sole way of eliminating the serious consequences of the armed intervention in Czechoslovakia is the urgent withdrawal of those five countries' troops and the assurance of the necessary conditions for the Czechoslovak people to solve its domestic affairs by itself. 3. The leaderships of all socialist countries and of the communist and workers' parties shall be informed about the stand of the Romanian Communist Party on the intervention made in Czechoslovakia by the five socialist countries' armed forces. 4. An extraordinary session of the Grand National Assembly shall be summoned on August 22, 1968 to discuss the situation obtaining in wake of the military intervention in Czechoslovakia and to adopt a statement on the basic principles of Romania's foreign policy. 5. The armed patriotic guards, formed of workers, peasants and intellectuals shall be immediately reorganized in order to assure the Romanian people's peaceful work, the homeland's national sovereignty and independence. 6. The Party bodies, the trade-union and LCY organizations, the managements of enterprises and institutions shall take the necessary measures for the normal unfolding of activity, to prevent any possible anarchical actions and to strengthen the guarded protection of all enterprises, State and civic institutions. 7. The measures adopted by the Executive Committee concerning the situation obtaining in Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia in wake of the penetration in Czechoslovakia by the armed forces of the five socialist parties shall be submitted for approval to the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, the State Council and the Council of Ministers. Parallel History Project on NATO and the Warsaw Pact (PHP) April 2004 Romania and the Warsaw Pact, 1955–1989 www.isn.ethz.ch/php Edited by Dennis Deletant, Mihail E. Ionescu and Anna Locher ________________________________________________________________________________________________ STENOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPT of the meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Romanian Workers’ Party 4 July 1963 Participants: comrades Emil Bodnaras, Petre Borila, Chivu Stoica, Alexandru Draghici, Ion Gheorghe Maurer, Alexandru Moghioros, Dumitru Coliu, Leonte Rautu, and Stefan Voitec. Comrade Leonte Rautu: Comrades, in a nutshell, the problem in question is the following: as you know, on 1 July a declaration of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party was issued in connection with the negotiations that are to take place, in which the composition of the PCC delegation, and the stand they had taken were announced. We have published the composition of the delegation, and a sentence in which the position of the Chinese was presented. Today the ”Pravda” newspaper published a declaration of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; I propose to have it read now (the declaration is being read). Cde. Emil Bodnaras: What about the Chinese declaration of 1 July, to which this [Soviet] declaration refers? Cde. Leonte Rautu: We can read that declaration, too, to refresh the memory of it (the declaration of 1 July is being read). These are the two materials. In connection with this declaration we have published the fact that the “New China” News Agency transmitted a declaration of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party announcing the composition of the PCC delegation, as well as a sentence showing that the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party nurtures the hope that the talks will be held with a unanimity of views.

CA' FOSCARI UNIVERSITY OF VENICE UNIVERSITY OF HOHENHEIM Double Degree Laurea Magistrale in Economia e gestione delle aziende Master of Science in International Business and Economics Department of Management Associate Professor Dr. Giovanni Favero Master-Thesis Italian Historical Migration and Investments in Modern-day Romania Liviu Constantin Jakob 848196 / 425517 [email protected] [email protected] Venice, October 9th 2014 1 Executive Summary The present master thesis analyses the common historical and economic relationship between Italy and Romania, two countries of Latin origin that have been both founded by the middle of the 19th century, through the unification of different former states of same roots, language, culture and history. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter covers the middle ages and then the period from the 19th century until 1945, when Italian craftsmen, especially from the provinces of North-Eastern Italy, came to the newly established Romanian Kingdom, laying the foundation for the nowadays officially recognized Italian minority in Romania. The second chapter presents the economic and social relationships between Italy and Romania during the time of the communist regime, which was imposed to Romania by the Soviet Union after World War 2 and lasted until the end of 1989. Chapter three presents the status of the Italian minority after the revolution of 1989 and until today. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the markets of the former communist states in Eastern Europe were opened to western products and investments. Also Romania opened its economy step by step during the transitional period from communism to capitalism and free market.

  • Ceausescu-PCR: Dictatorul, Delirul, Ideologia
In cartea mea „Stalinism pentru eternitate” si in alte lucrari am dezvoltat pe larg aceste idei. In salile legate de lupta PCdR in ilegalitate erau expuse fotografiile unor militanti azvarliti de Dej in deplina uitare, atunci cand nu erau public stigmatizati: Gh. Cristescu (Plapumaru), Boris Stefanov, Ana Pauker, Vasile Luca, Constantin Doncea, Dumitru Petrescu, Miron Constantinescu, Iosif Chisinevschi, Alexandru Iliescu, Constantin Parvulescu. Nu venise inca randul lui Lucretiu Patrascanu, lucrul acesta avea sa se petreaca abia dupa Plenara din aprilie 1968.

  • The Socialist Sacred: Atheism, Religion, and Mass Culture in Romania, 1948-1989
THE SOCIALIST SACRED: ATHEISM, RELIGION, AND MASS CULTURE IN ROMANIA, 1948-1989 BY ZSUZSÁNNA MAGDÓ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair and Director of Research Professor Keith Hitchins Professor Mark Steinberg Associate Professor Zsuzsa Gille ii ABSTRACT Drawing on new archival sources, official publications, and oral histories, I challenge the self-portrayal of socialist civilizations as scientific, secular, and the “other” of everything religious. Between 1948 and 1989, the Romanian communist regime sought to disenchant believers with a scientific, materialist worldview. Yet, it likewise strove to imbue citizens’ lives with socialist sacred meaning. My work demonstrates that we cannot understand late socialism’s contradictory drive for rationalization and re-enchantment without examining how elites produced knowledge about atheism and lived religion. This dissertation analyzes elite interactions with believers and the Central Committee from 1948, when transforming religiosity emerged as a party priority, to the end of the socialist era. My chapters focus on science popularizers, preservationists, sociologists, and folklorists in institutions of cultural administration and research newly created to manage socialist beliefs and behavior. These elites shaped the place of religion and atheism in Romanian society while competing for resources within the centralized structure of the Party-State. Their voices mattered because they engaged believers for whom national and religious belonging coincided. Elites also provided specialized knowledge for party organs committed to achieve convergence between ideology and citizens’ subjectivity.

It focuses on the inter-ethnic knock-on effects in the Romanian Workers Party, the "Hungarian/Mures-Hungarian Autono mous Region" of Transylvania, and the cultural institutions of the Hungarian minor ity. It links these developments to present-day Romanian-Hungarian relations, both on the interstate and the intrastate levels. Keywords: Transylvania, 1956, Hungarian minority, Bolyai University, Romania, Romanian Workers' Party The Hungarian "Fight for Freedom of 1956" had dramatic consequences not only for the people of Hungary but for the Hungarians in neighboring states. It is the concern of this paper to focus on the consequences of 1956 on the lives of Hungarians in Transylvania, within the Peoples' Republic of Romania. I have chosen this topic because very little has appeared about it in English or other "world" languages. Since 1989 many studies and documents have been pub lished in Hungarian on this subject, but very little of this awareness has been trans mitted beyond the Carpathian Basin. Thus, even among policymakers and acade micians there is confusion and outright ignorance about 1956 and its cross-border effects in East-Central Europe. I have selected Transylvania for my focus, because it is the area that witnessed the most far-reaching consequences, but which still has a wealth of literature and documentation in Hungarian.
