Comrades Mihai Dalea, Vasile Patilineţ, and Virgil Trofin were [also] invited to attend. The meeting started at 9:30. Nicolae Ceaușescu presided the meeting. Agenda: I. Some matters related to the situation in the Middle East. II. Other matters. Following discussions on [these topics] the Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party adopted the following decisions: I. It approves the proposals of the Permanent Presidium of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party regarding the actions to be subsequently undertaken with respect to the situation in the Middle East, namely: 1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to summon the Israeli minister to Bucharest to convey the Romanian point of view expressed in the June 10 1967 Declaration, [which says] that currently it is absolutely necessary to do everything possible to prevent the resumption of the armed conflict, to withdraw Israeli troops from the occupied territories as soon as possible within the borders existing before the war, to solve the problem of Arab refugees from Palestine and other contentious issues through negotiations. 2. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to summon the United Arab Republic Ambassador to Bucharest to convey the Romanian point of view expressed in the June 10 1967 Declaration, through which the Socialist Republic of Romania expresses its support and sympathy for the just struggle of the Arab people against imperialism and neocolonialism, supports the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied territories and within the borders existing before the war, and the resolution of all problems through negotiations between the warring camps, [and urges them to] undertake unrelenting efforts to find a solution which takes into account the fundamental and legitimate interests of all peoples living in this region. 3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to convey similar messages to the ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom, and France to Bucharest. In addition, [the Foreign Ministry] should inform socialist countries and other countries about the actions taken by our country. 4. The press, the radio, and the television are to inform public opinion about these actions. II. Comrade Leonte Rautu: Comrades, in a nutshell, the problem in question is the following: as you know, on 1 July a declaration of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party was issued in connection with the negotiations that are to take place, in which the composition of the PCC delegation, and the stand they had taken were announced. We have published the composition of the delegation, and a sentence in which the position of the Chinese was presented. Today the ”Pravda” newspaper published a declaration of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; I propose to have it read now (the declaration is being read). Cde. Emil Bodnaras: What about the Chinese declaration of 1 July, to which this [Soviet] declaration refers? Cde. Leonte Rautu: We can read that declaration, too, to refresh the memory of it (the declaration of 1 July is being read). These are the two materials. In connection with this declaration we have published the fact that the “New China” News Agency transmitted a declaration of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party announcing the composition of the PCC delegation, as well as a sentence showing that the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party nurtures the hope that the talks will be held with a unanimity of views.

In decembrie 2010, impreuna cu exceptionalul critic care a fost Alex. Leo Serban, am prezentat, la festivalul de film romanesc organizat de ICR din New York, filmul lui Andrei Ujica, „Autobiografia lui Nicolae Ceausescu”. Reiau aici cateva din ideile din interventia mea. O fac sub forma unor ipoteze despre dictatura lui Ceausescu, inevitabil succinte, chiar laconice. In cartea mea „Stalinism pentru eternitate” si in alte lucrari am dezvoltat pe larg aceste idei. Saptamana viitoare, IICCMER si Facultatea de Stiinte Politice a Universitatii din Bucuresti organizeaza o conferinta legata de aniversarea celor 90 de ani de la infiintarea PCR. www.crimelecomunismului.ro Imi amintesc de luna mai 1966 cand liderul totalitar de la Bucuresti tinea unul dintre cele mai importante discursuri din cariera sa politica pe tema PCR drept continuator al „traditiilor progresiste ale clasei muncitoare, ale poporului”. Se deschidea la Bucuresti, in prezenta conducerii PCR, noul Muzeu de istorie a partidului, a miscarii revolutionare din Romania, in sediul fostului Muzeu “Lenin-Stalin”, in cladirea in care se afla astazi Muzeul Taranului Român. Intrarea in prima sala a muzeului era strajuita de busturile lui Decebal si Traian. In salile legate de lupta PCdR in ilegalitate erau expuse fotografiile unor militanti azvarliti de Dej in deplina uitare, atunci cand nu erau public stigmatizati: Gh. Cristescu (Plapumaru), Boris Stefanov, Ana Pauker, Vasile Luca, Constantin Doncea, Dumitru Petrescu, Miron Constantinescu, Iosif Chisinevschi, Alexandru Iliescu, Constantin Parvulescu. Nu venise inca randul lui Lucretiu Patrascanu, lucrul acesta avea sa se petreaca abia dupa Plenara din aprilie 1968.

It focuses on the inter-ethnic knock-on effects in the Romanian Workers Party, the "Hungarian/Mures-Hungarian Autono­ mous Region" of Transylvania, and the cultural institutions of the Hungarian minor­ ity. It links these developments to present-day Romanian-Hungarian relations, both on the interstate and the intrastate levels. Keywords: Transylvania, 1956, Hungarian minority, Bolyai University, Romania, Romanian Workers' Party The Hungarian "Fight for Freedom of 1956" had dramatic consequences not only for the people of Hungary but for the Hungarians in neighboring states. It is the concern of this paper to focus on the consequences of 1956 on the lives of Hungarians in Transylvania, within the Peoples' Republic of Romania. I have chosen this topic because very little has appeared about it in English or other "world" languages. Since 1989 many studies and documents have been pub­ lished in Hungarian on this subject, but very little of this awareness has been trans­ mitted beyond the Carpathian Basin. Thus, even among policymakers and acade­ micians there is confusion and outright ignorance about 1956 and its cross-border effects in East-Central Europe. I have selected Transylvania for my focus, because it is the area that witnessed the most far-reaching consequences, but which still has a wealth of literature and documentation in Hungarian.

Nicolăescu-Plopșor” of the Romanian Academy [email protected] Abstract In a new document discovered at the Central Historical National Archives (Romania), there are some details of U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy’s intention to make a trip to several countries in Eastern Europe, in January 1968. On that occasion, the members of the Permanent Presidium of the C.C. of R.C.P. agreed at the meeting held on October 31st, 1967 that Corneliu Bogdan, Romania’s ambassador in Washington, should inform the Senator Robert Kennedy that he was welcome in Romania. R. Kennedy’s intention shows that American politicians were interested in Romanian authorities’ actions. This idea became obvious after one and a half year, when President Richard Nixon arrived in Bucharest (August 2nd-3rd, 1969) and Leonid Brejnev postponed his visit to Romania and the signing of the new Treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between the U.S.S.R. and the Socialist Republic of Romania.
