    Newsletter #33 2019 20 September 2019 Dear Parents, On Monday evening we had the privilege of honouring our achievers in the area of Sports, Culture and for the first time in this way, Service. It was a truly magical evening with the School Hall transformed with draping and beautiful lighting. The Catering Club provided a three-course meal which just added to the overall impact of the occasion. It was really nice to be able to have so many parents present as well. However, it would have been truly amazing if we had been able to have the whole school present to share in this special moment. We will however have an opportunity to all be together to honour our top academic achievers on the first Thursday of next Term when we hold our whole school Celebration (6:30pm, Thursday 3 October 2019). Please diarise this event which celebrates the achievements of our pupils over the past year. The evening will feature performances from our Drama, Music and Dance pupils. SPORT, CULTURAL AND SERVICE AWARDS 2019 Congratulations to all the winners at the Sports, Cultual and Service Awards. A complete list of all the winners is attached with this newsletter. PARENTS SUPPORT WELCOME FOR FACILITY STAFFROOM REFURBISH A team of parents would like show their appreciation towards the dedicated work of the Facilities Team by creating a space for them to unwind in their breaks.     Issue 21 12 July 2019 12 July 2019 21 Welcome back from the cosiness of a decidedly wet winter’s break to the vibrancy of Term 3. I spoke to the high school in assembly this week about GRIT – and I wasn’t talking about the uniform suppliers, although one can see why that company is so named. Grit is the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals. Sometimes you will hear grit referred to as mental toughness. Angela Duckworth, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that grit is a strong predictor of success and ability to reach one's goals. Most things worth achieving involve huge effort and the tenacity and steadfast determination that is understood by the term ‘grit’: the ballerina who dances on bleeding toes; the Comrades athlete who forges through the agony of cramp s and blisters; the astronaut who spends decades preparing for a single mission, only to spend most of his time upside down, while his teammates walk on the moon: these know that it is grit that sees them through. History’s heroes overcame often insurmountable odds to succeed in the face of adversity: the prisoners who endured the quarries and torments of Robben Island in order to birth our nation; the Mother Theresa’s of this world who work with the poor and rejected; the cleansing surrender of Ramadan; Christ crucified. 2 12 July 2019 21 FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF GRIT Courage Conscientiousness Perseverance Resilience Passion So we exhort our learners to leave their winter nest and take on the term with Grit: PLEASE DIARISE!     1 AWARD WINNERS The annual University of Cape Town Mathematics Competition took place on the UCT campus on 14 April this year, attracting over 6600 participants from Western Cape high schools. Each school could enter up to five individuals and five pairs, in each grade (8 to 12). The question papers were set by a team of local teachers and staff of the UCT Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Each paper consisted of 30 questions, ranging from rather easy to quite difficult. Gold Awards were awarded to the top ten individuals and top three pairs in each grade.
