Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Seoul National University aspires to be a premium academic institution in the field of international and area studies. GSIS has distinguished faculty members who are globally competitive and nationally well- known. Many of them obtained Ph.D. in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. We have also home- grown faculty members. Most of them have working experiences in the U.S., Japan, China and Europe. Some faculty members have wide-ranging practical experiences either in government or public sectors. GSIS is widening its scope of education, covering international cooperation, international commerce, international area studies, and Korean studies. As of September 1, 2016, GSIS is substantially global, with 147 international students from 47 countries currently enrolled as GSIS full-time or exchange students.

Based on the double-degree agreements with the School of International Studies (SIS) at Peking University, China, and Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) at the University of Tokyo, Japan, GSIS will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in promoting in a larger context of international studies. GSIS will also extend its academic and research cooperation with major professional schools in international studies around the world. In cooperation with the Institute for International Studies, which is affiliated with the GSIS, GSIS will function as a core of research in the field of international and area studies. GSIS also encompasses the Institute for Japanese Studies that stands at the center of Japan and East Asian studies.

With high standard global outreach, GSIS will definitely place itself as a prime institution in the world that cultivates global leaders in coming years.

Seoul National University Major Programs at a Glance

• International Commerce: The curriculum of International Commerce at GSIS is diverse. International Commerce students are granted opportunities to delve into the world of international trade and finance, international business and investment, as well as international trade law and negotiations. The International Commerce major offers an innovative and specialized curriculum to train students into international commerce experts, by providing them with multi-dimensional academic activities of case studies, expert seminars, and simulation classes.

• International Cooperation: A number of interdisciplinary courses on politics, international security, international political economy, international law and organization, international development, and the diversity of culture are provided to students majoring in International Cooperation. The curriculum aims to shed lights on the dynamic changes of the international environment so that students can learn to apply the knowledge and to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

• International Area Studies: International Area Studies students are trained to become area specialists with a comprehensive understanding in specific regions of the world (China, Japan, East Asia, America, and Europe), and to be equipped with extensive knowledge of regional societies as future leaders. Diverse courses on politics, economics, society, and culture are offered.

• Korean Studies: Korean Studies students are trained as research specialists on Korea with a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. The curriculum consists of various courses on history, politics, international relations, sociology, economics, culture and . Korean Studies courses are conducted in Korean for foreign students and in English for Korean and exchange students.
