Situations Vol. 5 (Winter 2011) © 2011 by Yonsei University Sunghee Pak (Yonsei University) In Tune with the Ear of the Public Kayagŭm and the Status of Traditional Korean Music in the Twenty-First Century in Korea Every Thursday, I visit Gahwae-dong (Kahoe-dong) in central Seoul, a locale with many traditional Korean houses, to take my weekly kayagŭm lesson. Kayagŭm is a traditional Korean musical instrument with twelve silk strings, which dates back to A.D. 551 (Hwang, Chimhyang-moo 9). It has been several years since I first started learning it, but before I took my first lesson, I had never seen a kayaŭm, apart from a few pictures in the music text book in middle school. Many people in Korea nowadays are not familiar with their traditional musical instruments. Though kayagŭm and kŏmun’go play the most important role in any Korean ensemble, as equivalents of the violin in Western classical orchestra, not many people have seen them up close. During the 1980s and 1990s, Korean classical music experienced a revival, and there have been several attempts to inform the public about this. These attempts achieved some fruit but there are still more to be done in promoting the essence of traditional Korean music. Until the 1990s, traditional Korean music—kugak, in Korean—conveyed an image of something old, decayed, and outdated. People vaguely knew that the tradition was worth keeping, but whereas Western piano or violin were thought to be elegant, and Western pop music such as the Beatles was treated as a symbol of youth and freedom, kugak, was very far from being considered chic. -

The relationships between the two countries were marked at the 19th century by tumultuous episodes due to French catholic proselytism and expansionist policy in East Asia but also by remarkable and unexpected scholarly achievements. At the 20th century, the isolated initiatives to promote and study Korea in France randomly taken by missionaries, diplomats, collectors and orientalists have been progressively replaced by institutionalized Korean studies that started to be structured within French universities and other higher education institutions with the help of specialists of other areas (China and Japan). -
Professor Martina Deuchler: the Swiss Expert on Korean Studies
When she was only 15 years old, Martina Deuchler visited an exhibition of Chinese paintings. She was so impressed with what she saw that she decided on the spot to devote her life to Chinese studies. Eventually she extended her interest to Korea and is today Switzerland’s leading expert on Korean history and culture. While still in high school, she started to learn the Chinese language. After receiving her diploma, she enrolled at Leiden University (Netherlands), where she studied classical Chinese and Japanese. In 1959, she received an invitation from Professor John K. Fairbank, the founder of modern Chinese studies in the United States, to continue her studies at Harvard University. For her doctoral dissertation, she chose to work on the opening of Korea’s seaports to Japan and the Western powers at the end of the 19th century. It was thus diplomatic history that opened Mrs. Deuchler‘s door to Korea. In those Professor Martina Deuchler: days, very few documents on Korean history were available in Western libraries. Therefore, after completing her Ph.D in the Swiss expert on Korean studies history and Far Eastern languages with a dissertation entitled “The Opening of Korea, 1875 - 1884” (published in 1977), she went to Korea to delve into the country’s past in the Royal Archives. A decade after the Korean War, the Republic of Korea was still an agrarian country with little industry, and life was very difficult. Yet during that two-year sojourn, Mrs. Deuchler decided to change the focus of her studies to Korean social history. That was a decisive change that connected her to Korea for the rest of her life. -

International Journal of Communication 14(2020), 3727–3745 1932–8036/20200005 Historiography of Korean Esports: Perspectives on Spectatorship DAL YONG JIN Simon Fraser University, Canada As a historiography of esports in Korea, this article documents the very early esports era, which played a major role in developing Korea’s esports scene, between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. By using spectatorship as a theoretical framework, it articulates the historical backgrounds for the emergence of esports in tandem with Korea’s unique sociocultural milieu, including the formation of mass spectatorship. In so doing, it attempts to identify the major players and events that contributed to the formation of esports culture. It periodizes the early Korean esports scene into three major periods—namely, the introduction of PC communications like Hitel until 1998, the introduction of StarCraft and PC bang, and the emergence of esports broadcasting and the institutionalization of spectatorship in the Korean context until 2002. Keywords: esports, historiography, spectatorship, youth culture, digital games In the late 2010s, millions of global youth participated in esports as gamers and viewers every day. With the rapid growth of various game platforms, in particular, online and mobile, people around the world enjoy these new cultural activities. From elementary school students to college students, to people in their early careers, global youth are deeply involved in esports, referring to an electronic sport and the leagues in which players compete through networked games and related activities, including the broadcasting of game leagues (Jin, 2010; T. L. Taylor, 2015). As esports attract crowds of millions more through online video streaming services like Twitch, the activity’s popularity as one of the most enjoyable sports and business products continues to soar. -

Support for Korean Language Education Overseas To facilitate the teaching of Korean as a foreign language at overseas universities, the Foundation undertakes various support programs for the establishment of Korean language lectureships, maintenance of Korean language courses, and dispatch of visiting Korean language professors. Assistance is also offered for workshops and academic conferences that seek to upgrade the professional expertise of Korean language educators and facilitate the development of personal networks. Fellowships Grants To encourage Korea-related research and scholarship, the Korea Foundation offers a variety of support programs to overseas Korean Studies professors, graduate students, and researchers. These programs include Fellowship for Korean Language Training, Fellowship for Field Research, Fellowship for Graduate Studies, Advanced Research Grants, Fellowship for Postdoctoral Research, Publication Subsidy, and Support for Instructional Materials Development.
