The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 by Sunyoung Yang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Sunyoung Yang Year of 2015 The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 Sunyoung Yang Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2015 Abstract In this dissertation I will shed light on the interwoven process between Internet development and neoliberalization in South Korea, and I will also examine the formation of new subjectivities of Internet users who are also becoming neoliberal subjects. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve. -

Korean Wave as Cultural Imperialism A study of K-pop Reception in Vietnam Author: Duong Nguyen Hoai Phuong (s1623117) Supervisor: Dr. Namhee Han Leiden University MA Thesis Asian Studies (60 EC) 2 Introduction During my four years of college in Korea, I went back to my home country Vietnam a couple of times. Whenever I told people that I was studying in Korea, one of the most common reactions was: "Oh, so did you see any oppa?" It never took me more than two seconds to realize they were talking about K-pop idols. Interestingly, that question did not only come from underclassmen or children of my family's friends who aspire to follow my footsteps, I often got asked by many of the adults around me as well. Usually they would continue to ask why I chose to go to Korea, to which my older brother often jokingly answered: "Because she is a crazy K- pop fan." "Crazy" may not be the most equivalent English word, if anything it actually carries a much milder connotation. What my brother called me in Vietnamese was fan cuồng K-pop—a term no longer uncommon in Vietnamese colloquial language ever since the local media started to use it to label K-pop fans in Vietnam. Before having anything to do with K-pop, the word cuồng (/kʊəŋ/) in Vietnamese comes closest to describe an overly devout believer of a religion; thus "fanatical" seems to be a better translation. With such a negative connotation, I am certainly not happy with my brother's statement. -

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan. -
Korean Sauna (Jjimjilbang) Wellness Tourism As Perceived by Westerners Living in South Korea

Kessler1, Professor K.J. Chung1, & Professor B.J. Jang1 Abstract In this paper, we examined attitudes of westerners living in South Korea regarding Korean saunas (jjimjilbangs). We surveyed (n=225) westerners living in South Korea who have visited a Korean sauna at least once during their stay. The purpose of our research was to measure subjective attitudes, frequency, and motivation towards sauna usage along with their self-reported health evaluations and basic demographic variables. We hypothesized there would be a positive correlation between the respondent's self-reported health evaluations and the frequency of usage of the spa. Additionally, we hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between the length of time living in South Korea and the frequency of spa usage. Using the SF-36 to measure self-reported health characteristics, results of our statistical analysis indicate a Pearson Correlation of .428 between the frequency of spa usage and SF-36 respondents scores. Moreover, we found no correlation in the length of staying in Korea and frequency of spa usage. Findings from this research are consistent with the findings from our literature review of the general health benefits of saunas. Keywords: South Korea, tourism, sauna, spa, wellness, health 1. -

It has been changing the landscape of the whole foodservice industry by forming new eating-out culture as well as by expanding the market volume of foodservice industry. Initially, the substantial growth has been driven by social, cultural and economical changes such as busier lifestyle, westernization of eating pattern and increase of income level in a booming economy. Then after the Korean financial crisis, the industry as a whole has chased undifferentiated growth strategy to survive under severe competition. However, profitability has been deteriorated because the growth stemmed from multi-store strategy. While most of the family restaurant companies have been focusing on volume without profits leading to financial difficulties, some successful players have captured the market by leveraging their core competence and have evolved from the second movers to market leaders.
