" (Na He-sok, Maeil Sinba, 3 April 192 1; translated by Kim Yung-hee) Before a woman is a wife, a daughter, and a mother, she is a human being. The content of this 192 1 poem by Korea's first Western style painter, Na He-sok, is significant as a manifesto of women 's liberation in poetic form. In a Confucian patriarchal family system in which the identity and social status of women were defined through their relationships with men, as mothers and Being Modern: Representing the 'New Woman' 217 and 'Modern Girl' in Korean Art Wives, this assertion of independence was an important change that rocked the country. By late nineteenth century, thought about the traditional woman was broadly challenged by the influx of modem Western thought. The first educational institution for women, Ehwa Women's School, was established in 1886. 1 Examination of Two Responses to Cope with the Sewol
Examination of two responses to cope with the Sewol Ferry incident: The ways of traditional Korean Buddhism and the Jungto Society Thank you, Professor Kang. Thank you everybody for attending this session. It is an honor to give my presentation here with scholars sharing similar interest. I hope my presentation could contribute to remember the victims and to console the bereaved families. As the video and other panel described, Sewol Ferry incident was very a shocking disaster for the Korean people. Buddhists and their institutions grieved together and joined together on the path to healing. Their ways were mostly similar but there were subtle differences between traditional Buddhist organizations and teachers, and the Jungto Society and the Buddhist monk Pomnyun (1953~ ). Their distinctions are derived from their different emphasis on the aspects of Buddhist causation. In this paper, by contrasting their different responses to the Sewol Ferry incident, I will consider what the proper boundary for Buddhist engagement in social disaster is. Before we discuss today’s topic, let me explain some basic differences between the traditional Buddhist organizations and the Jungto Society. You might have heard the name of the monk Pomnyun and attended one of his talks, “Conversation with Pomnyun (JeukmunJeuksul, 卽問卽說). The Jungto Society is the laity-centered practitioner community established by Pomnyun in 1988. The organization is both a religious community and a social activist group. It is managed by lay practitioners and is more focused on its followers’ education and practice than on performing rituals for them. On the other hand, the traditional form of Buddhism in Korea follows the traditional monk/nun-centered monastic system in which a monk/nun is a priest as well as a practitioner and the lay people are believers and patrons. -

A Sociocultural Analysis of Korean Sport for International Development Initiatives Dongkyu Na Thesis submitted to the University of Ottawa in partial Fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Kinetics School of Human Kinetics Faculty of Health Sciences University of Ottawa © Dongkyu Na, Ottawa, Canada, 2021 Korean Sport for International Development ii Abstract This dissertation focuses on the following questions: 1) What is the structure of the Korean sport for international development discourse? 2) How are the historical transformations of particular rules of formation manifested in the discourse of Korean sport for international development? 3) What knowledge, ideas, and strategies make up Korean sport for international development? And 4) what are the ways in which these components interact with the institutional aspirations of the Korean government, directed by the official development assistance goals, the foreign policy and diplomatic agenda, and domestic politics? To address these research questions, I focus my analysis on the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and its 30 years of expertise in designing and implementing sport and physical activity–related programs and aid projects. For this research project, I collected eight different sets of KOICA documents published from 1991 to 2017 as primary sources and two different sets of supplementary documents including government policy documents and newspaper articles. 5. KOREAN THEATRE There are various theatres of different national origin functioning in Soviet Central Asia. In Alma-Ata in Kazakhstan, there exist seven different national theatres: Kazakh, Russian, Korean, Uighur, Azerbaijani, Turkish and German. The Uighur Theatre, established in 1934, is unique as is the Korean Theaue in the Soviet Union. The German Theatre, the youngest of them, was established as late as in 1981 in Temirtau. But the background of the Korean Theatre is different from that of the other national theatres. It is known that there were also Korean theatres in Sakhalin and Tashkent, but they are no longer in existence. 5.1. History The present official name of the Korean Theaue is the Kazakh Repubtic National Korean Music and Comedy Theatre.The roots of this theatre go back into the Soviet Far East. During the days of the Far Eastern period, the centre for Korean acrivitics had been vladivostok, and especially sinhanchon, the New Korean Quarrer, located on rhe hilly side of the city. Koreans published newspapers there, Russian literature was translated into Korean and an interest in drama also arose. As a result of this interest, the Korean Theane began its activities in the 1920s, first as the Korean Theaue Croup of the cigarette factory of Vladivostok. The activities of this group were initiated by workers of the factory, i.e. by Ten Hugem, Ten Viktor, Li Gien, Li Mariya and Choi pong-do, etc. But the person who played the mosr importanr role in this field was Kim lk-su (Nikolay), who had contacts with the Russian Theatre of v. -
