Rain came down in sheets making it dicult to see as I Syrah Pesenti drove up to Turley Wine Cellars’ oce and winery north of St. Helena this February Vineyard to taste the new 2017 vintage and continued as I worked through the brand’s 2017 Turley Wine 97+ nearly 50 separate bottlings. Doomsday weather aside, the quality of the wines Cellars Petite Syrah Library reminded me of the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Despite the Vineyard challenges of the 2017 vintage—particularly a Labor Day heat wave and, shortly 2017 Turley Wine 97 thereafter, the wildres—Turley has, with the help of some of California’s oldest Cellars Petite vineyards, produced another set of benchmark wines. The quality’s in the glass. Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge “Larry has been farming organically longer than anyone in Napa,” winemaker Tegan Passalacqua tells me of its founder. “The estate here has been farmed 2017 Turley Wine 95+ Cellars organically since 1979. Everything we farm ourselves is organically farmed, and Zinfandel most of our growers farm that way, too.” Commitment is key for quality here: Dragon Vineyard commitment to responsible farming, commitment to working with and preserving very old vines, commitment to expressing terroir with varieties not always 2017 Turley Wine (94 - 96)+ Cellars Petite associated with that now-lofty term. At Turley,USA, California: the meaning Turley is broader,Wine Cellars literally. 2017 Tasting Vintage the - Robert 2017 ParkerZinfandel Wine Advocate Juvenile, Passalacqua says, “This comes from 13 counties, and I think it expresses its place more than the average person who puts California on the label to hide something. This really showcases California.” Even within the single-vineyard bottlings, terroir here speaks to something more than a single variety from a single site. Turley works with more than 50 vineyards, many of them very old. The Library vineyard, for example, from which Turley crafts a single-vineyard Petite Syrah, was planted between 1880 and 1920 to 24 separate varieties. Passalacqua points out that in a given year, some of these varieties will yield more or less, naturally changing up the blend. “We are always elusive,” Passalacqua says if you ask him for concrete percentages of grapes in a given wine. “We co-ferment all the eld blends,” he explains. “We pick all the grapes together and ferment them all together, the way god intended.” This natural change of auxiliary varieties may also help to explain why, even in challenging vintages, the wines maintain a high standard of quality. The real work at Turley happens before fruit ever reaches the winery—it’s the work put into identifying, reviving and nurturing California’s very old vineyards, often dry farmed and own-rooted. While there’s no concrete science behind if/how old vines equate to quality, the wines from Turley provide strong experiential evidence, at least. A vine that’s been in the ground since the early 1900s is probably better equipped to handle a spate of over 100-degree Fahrenheit days, for example, as happened over Labor Day in 2017. The wines at Turley are not inoculated or acidied. All the Zinfandels are crafted using the same techniques, including 80% French and 20% American oak, with about 20% new oak overall. “We work with 13 coopers because I want low impact,” Passalacqua explains. “I don’t want a cooper’s signature in the wines.” Given Turley’s wide range of vineyard sources, from places as far ung as Sonoma Coast and Paso Robles, they were able to avoid much damage from the 2017 res that began on October 8th. All the fruit had been harvested by that time, with the exception of about 30% of the Cabernet Sauvignon. “We sent it to be tested for smoke taint, and it came back negative, but we didn’t include it anyway,” Passalacqua says. Most of the Cabernet fruit was picked around 25 brix. The barrel samples I tasted showed rm but ripe tannins, with intense layers of dark fruit streaked with mineral nuance. The 2017s are notable for their singularity, each Zinfandel and Petite Syrah replete with its own unique personality. The wines show great layers of tricolored fruit and ripe tannins across the board. There are also some new bottlings here, including Grenache Blanc from Pesenti vineyard, usually bottled as part of the White Coat blend; Barbera from Sleeper Ranch vineyard in Amador County; and three new single-vineyard Zinfandels, including the Bohan Ranch, which is made with fruit from own-rooted vines that Turley has used for 15 years—this is usually blended into the Zinfandel Old Vines bottling, but the vines were torn out after the 2017 vintage and thus were given their own bottling this https://www.robertparker.com/articles/npgd9wZYZvAHfyarbyear.
