Wisse Kelly Scott Johnson Sholem Schwarzbard: Biography of a Jewish Assassin Abstract The thesis represents the first complete academic biography of a Jewish clockmaker, warrior poet and Anarchist named Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard's experience was both typical and unique for a Jewish man of his era. It included four immigrations, two revolutions, numerous pogroms, a world war and, far less commonly, an assassination. The latter gained him fleeting international fame in 1926, when he killed the Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in Paris in retribution for pogroms perpetrated during the Russian Civil War (1917-20). After a contentious trial, a French jury was sufficiently convinced both of Schwarzbard's sincerity as an avenger, and of Petliura's responsibility for the actions of his armies, to acquit him on all counts. Mostly forgotten by the rest of the world, the assassin has remained a divisive figure in Jewish-Ukrainian relations, leading to distorted and reductive descriptions his life. -

Patrick Bouvet is eight years old and does not yet know that this innocent pastime will lead him on countless adventures, from book to book forging a whole universe: his very own. Nor does he know that years later, on emerging from this universe, he will go on to write incisive and subversive texts that explore modern mythologies. Confined in his childhood home, between a father who reads newspapers to follow the racing form, and a mother who seems to have been undermined by a heavy secret, the author opens his “book from within”. He reveals—in his own way, orchestrating the slide from one family scene to the next—his career path, that of a reader who became a writer. Born in 1962, Patrick Bouvet is a writer and musician. Mixing writing and performance, he is one of the most brilliant artist of his genera- tion’s underground scene. -

Britain and the Emergence of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia 1942-1946: Conspiracy Theory Or Chaos Theory?
BRITAIN AND THE EMERGENCE OF THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA 1942-1946: CONSPIRACY THEORY OR CHAOS THEORY? James PETTIFER 327(410):94(497.7) „1944“ ABSTRACT: This paper explores the background of British foreign policy and the emergence of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia within the second Yugoslavia. It suggests that there was a great uncertainty about the future of the territory in 1944 and British policy towards Tito was often based on speculation and ignorance of his plans for Macedonia after the conflict. The traditional Philhellenism of the British elite also played a part in policymaking. The prime factor in policy evaluation was to maintain a strong stable authority in Belgrade after the World War II and to resist the growth of Bulgarian and hence Russian influence in the wider region of the Southern Balkans. Key words: World War II, Macedonia, British policy, diplomacy, the Balkans

These two states have common, ethnic,, linguistic and religious origins but the process of history has been such as to drive them apart. During the last century there have been numerous attempts to bring the Slav peoples together within a single union or federation but these have failed. The period from 1918-1941 was a time when the most serious attempts, were made.- to bring about a rapprochement but it was also a time of the greatest bitterness and disillusionment. -
