Immersive, Multimedia and Interactive Journey / For All

This immersive journey, the first-of-its-kind in India, celebrates the breadth and depth of the relationship between India and France in a way it has never been told before - from technology to culture, from yesterday to tomorrow.

Firmly anchored in a variety of domains, the French links with India are largely unknown and sharply under-estimated. The Experience brings them to the fore, highlighting Indo-French collaborations between artists, writers and thinkers, but also in areas like energy, environment, urbanism and space, in a fully intuitive, experimental way.

The Experience showcases the strength of our present partnerships, unveiling what France and India have in common, and shows the way to creative involvement in the future - not only in terms of economic and trade alliances, but also through people- to-people exchanges. Its innovative and interactive scenography will transform a long and rich story into a dynamic journey.

Art in Urban Space / Street Installations and Murals / Social Innovation / For All

As part of Bonjour India, ten French street-artists give a very French flavour to this edition of the renowned Street Art Festival in India. Alongside Indian artists, they will co-create innovative and interactive art in four Indian cities. Working with minority communities, they will use art to rejuvenate popular districts, giving shape and colour to new and sustainable environments.

Workshops, interactive activities and exchanges with the community are all part of this programme that takes place during the four months of Bonjour India.

In Mumbai, several artists will take part in the revival of Sassoon MUMBAI HYDERABAD KOLKATA CHANDIGARH Docks area, as part of the Focus France programme. Ella and Pitr November 10-26 December 1-15 February 1-8 February 13-23 will use their iconic roof top painting, as well as paste-ups all over Focus France: 25-26 the dockyard and create half a dozen murals.

French artist LEK and Indian artist Asim Waqif will create ‘Guerilla Warfare’, using urban infrastructure to manipulate space and in turn confuse the spectators and relocate them in challenging positions.

French interdisciplinary practice for architecture and territorial reconfiguration, AWP will work on an installation called ‘Mum by night’, made with UV paint and photographic elements.

Jr’s international pasteup project ‘Inside Out’ will come to life through photographer and artist Akshat Nauriyal along with his team. Over 350 portraits of the fishermen and women working at Sassoon Docks will be pasted on the warehouses where they work with the intent of shedding light on the invisible faces who work tirelessly, providing the city with most of its fish, and are also among the oldest settlers of Mumbai, yet remain anonymous.

Like a work of art, a good wine is the result of a creative and maturing process over time.

And also as for a work of art, a wine expert opens up new layers of appreciation of its taste.

Art & wine open the way to the exploration of multi-sensory perceptions and nurture the poetic resonances propitious to revive our daily lives.

With the in-depth expertise of an art specialist from France and a savvy sommelier, here’s bringing the French ‘art de vivre’ to an Indian audience in an exquisite exchange. A singular occasion only for those heady to take these sensorial, perhaps even spiritual, experiences, to the next level.

Sonia Wieder-Atherton is today’s most gifted and well-known French cellist. Following her Mediterranean Odyssey, Sonia Wieder-Atherton now brings her talent and creativity to India. Absorbing a landscape of sounds recorded in situ into her performance of classical pieces, she explores the question of how the world resonates in music.

‘I don’t know India, but I dream of discovering it, travelling to its different cities and regions, meeting people, taking time with them to share my Odyssey, recording sounds together, then incorporating this raw material into the Odyssey and its soundtrack.

Each venue hosting a performance would thus become the home of its own Odyssey: the Odyssey for that place and those people. My wish is for the sounds, narratives, songs, all the things that I cannot yet imagine, to take their place in my odyssey and meet the voice of my cello.’

Heaven and Earth brings India and France together through an Inspiring encounter between traditional and vocal music. Padma Shri Awardee Aruna Sairam, India’s most famous singer of Classical Carnatic music, shares the stage with Dominique Vellard, expert in Gregorian chanting and director of Gilles Binchois ensemble.

Heaven and Earth explores the ancient poetic sources of both cultures by delving into the tradition of Tirukkural and French medieval poetry and maxims. In the seven words of each Kural (poem or proverb), are embedded very simple, yet profound life principles. By juxtaposing this tradition of wisdom with French poetry and maxims, the project creates a dialogue in which Kurals and other poetic forms are recited and set to music, interspersed with musical interludes.

Baroque Recital / Classical Music / For All

Le Poème Harmonique, a leading French baroque ensemble, will come on stage to celebrate the golden age of Baroque, an era when music dissolved borders across Europe.

Under artistic director Vincent Dumestre, Venezia recreates the highly entertaining performances of the 17th- and 18th- centuries, when art music and popular forms mingled, and feelings and freedom of language had not yet been held in check by rules and codes.

Venezia begins with Monteverdi’s madrigals, as the famous Lamento della Ninfa. It goes on to typical light and funny pieces written by Francesco Manelli, one of the most brilliant composers of the Venetian Baroque.

Through this programme, Bonjour India launches collaborations in baroque and opera music between India and France, while encouraging professional training in the classical music forms. y h p r u M w e h t t a © M

Baroque Music / Collaboration / Music Training / For All

A mix of devotion and passion, joy and tears, Songs of the Heart features music by French and Italian composers illustrated by poetry from the Renaissance and Baroque eras in dialogue with jewels of Indian poetry.

Similar lyrics celebrate both sacred and profane love in the Songs of Songs from the Bible (in musical settings by Palestrina or Monteverdi) and in Les Amours de Ronsard (music by PUNE MUMBAI CHENNAI Anthoine de Bertrand). We also find parallels in ancient Tamil Mazda Hall NCPA Edouard Michelin Auditorium, December 19 December 21 Alliance Française of Madras love poems or in texts by saintly women like Andal, Mira Bai or December 17 Lal Led that explore every facet of Love.

Under the direction of Françoise Lasserre, Akadêmia has worked with Indian artists since 2013. Together, the ensemble has given concerts and performed operas in Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Paris, Metz and Reims.

For this production, five singers and two instrumentalists from France will be joined by thirteen singers and two actors from India.

Indian and Western Classical Music / Bansuri / Voice / For All

Hariprasad Chaurasia, one of the world’s greatest contemporary musicians, made the Hindustani classical art of the bansuri flute popular in the whole world. His immense talent as a composer allows him to capture the essence of the major genres of music from all continents.

The Maestro feels a particular closeness to the purity of medieval monodies where many connections can be established with the world of ragas. Today, he is confronting the source of all Western classical music: the plainchant evolved in Christian communities of Western Europe during the first centuries, in the form of Gregorian chant and the first polyphonies of the Ecole de Notre-Dame, of which the Ensemble Diabolus

Author’s Residency / Poetry / Gond Art / For All

An enchanting vision of our world brought to light through the eyes of four women, Metro Lands is a book crossing the metro of Paris and the suburban railway of Mumbai to offer us poetry of small things.

This book examines the gigantic, omnipresent arterial system that transforms each city into a living, breathing creature: the connective tissue knitting disparate organs – glamorous, plebeian, historic, modern, functional, touristic – into a body with soul.

The suburban railways is a shared space that transcends clichés about both cities, when a crowd of millions of individuals parts to reveal fragments of stories we can only guess at, or invent.

Written by poets Karthika Naïr and Sampurna Chattarji, illustrated by Joëlle Jolivet (in residency in Mumbai) and Roshni Vyam (in residency in Paris), Metro Lands celebrates the multiplicity of gazes on the familiar, the everyday — through word and image, language, shape and colour.
