The Study of Hidden Habitats Sheds Light on Poorly Known Taxa: Spiders of the Mesovoid Shallow Substratum

ZooKeys 841: 39–59. https:// doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.841.33271 Abstract The scarce and biased knowledge about the diversity and distribution of Araneae species in the Iberian Peninsula is accentuated in poorly known habitats such as the Mesovoid Shallow Substratum (MSS). The aim of this study was to characterize the spiders inventory of the colluvial MSS of the Sierra de Guadar- rama National Park, and to assess the importance of this habitat for the conservation of the taxon. Thirty-three localities were selected across the high peaks of the Guadarrama mountain range and they were sampled for a year using subterranean traps specially designed to capture arthropods in the MSS. -
Case Studies in Reggio Calabria, Italy
Sustainable Development and Planning X 903 RIVER ANTHROPIZATION: CASE STUDIES IN REGGIO CALABRIA, ITALY ROSA VERSACI, FRANCESCA MINNITI, GIANDOMENICO FOTI, CATERINA CANALE & GIUSEPPINA CHIARA BARILLÀ DICEAM Department. Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, Italy ABSTRACT The considerable anthropic pressure that has affected most of Italian territory in the last 60 years has altered natural conditions of coasts and river, thus increasing exposure to environmental risks. For example, increase in soil waterproofing caused a reduction in hydrological losses with a rise in flood flows (with the same rainfall conditions), especially in urban areas. This issue is important in territories like Mediterranean region, that are prone to flooding events. From this point of view, recent advances in remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques allow us to analyze morphological changes occurred in river and in urban centers, in order to evaluate possible increases in environmental risks related to the anthropization process. This paper analyzes and describes the effects of anthropization process on some rivers in the southern area of the Reggio Calabria city (the Sant'Agata, Armo and Valanidi rivers). This is a heavily anthropized area due to the presence of the airport, highway and houses. The analysis was carried out using QGIS, through the comparison of cartography data of the last 60 years, which consists of aerophotogrammetry of 1955, provided by Italian Military Geographic Institute, and the latest satellite imagery provided by Google Earth Pro. Keywords: river anthropization, flooding risk, GIS, cartography data, Reggio Calabria. 1 INTRODUCTION The advance in anthropogenic pressure observed in Italy over the last 60 years [1], [2] has increased vulnerability of territory under the action of natural events such as floods [3]–[5], debris flow [6], [7], storms [8], [9] and coastal erosion [10], [11]. -

H-France Review Volume 17 (2017) Page 1 H-France Review Vol. 17 (July 2017), No. 104 Pierre Force, Wealth and Disaster: Atlantic Migrations from a Pyrenean Town in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016. xviii + 230 pp. Maps, figures, notes, bibliography, and index. $45.00 U.S. (hb). ISBN 978-1-4214-2128-5. Review by Sandra Ott, University of Nevada, Reno. By the beginning of the twentieth century, a popular definition of what it meant to be “an authentic Basque” had three main requirements: to have a Basque surname, to speak the Basque language, and to have an uncle in America.[1] Pierre Force’s fascinating study of trans-Atlantic French Basque migrations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries begins with a passage from a musical comedy entitled L’oncle d’Amérique, performed in Paris in 1826. In the play, a coachman poses as a young lady’s “American uncle,” a plantation owner from the Caribbean colony of Saint-Domingue. The “uncle” boasts ownership of “two millions” worth in land, houses, and “negroes.” French audiences of that time equated America with Saint-Domingue, once France’s most lucrative colony owing to sugar and coffee production and to slave labor. Yet the figure of the “American uncle” conveyed a dual, ambivalent image of both wealth and disaster. Pierre Force seeks to understand the roots of such ambivalence by reconstructing a multi-generational network of emigrants in two families from the town of La Bastide Clairence in Lower Navarre: the Lamerenxs and the Mouscardys. Marc-Antoine Lamerenx emigrated to Saint-Domingue in 1729 and settled in the town of Saint-Martin- du-Dondon. -
The Taraxacum Flora of the Sierra De Guadarrama and Its Surroundings (Spain)
THE TARAXACUM FLORA OF THE SIERRA DE GUADARRAMA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS (SPAIN) by ADRIÁN J. RICHARDS* Resumen RICHARDS. A. J. (1992). Abstract RICHARDS, A. J. (1992). The Taraxacum flora of the Sierra de Guadarrama and its surround- ings (Spain). Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 50(2): 201-208. Eighteen native agamospermous species of Taraxacum are reported from the Sierra de Gua- darrama and its surroundings. These are classified amongst six sections of the genus. Three species are recorded from Spain for the first time, and in addition two new species are des- cribed, T. navacerradense (sect. Alpestria) and T. nietoi (sect. Céltica). In this región it seems that almost all Taraxacum are agamospermous. Only a single specimen of an adventive sexual was discovered. Key words: Taraxacum, taxonomy, agamospermy. Spain. INTRODUCTION these have been described as 'species'. Such plants sometimes lack pollen. Taraxacum (Asteraceae-Cichorieae) is a However, in some regions, including panglobal, although mostly non-tropical, many lowland parts of southern Europe, genus of rosette-forming perennial herbs. -
