View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Falmouth University Research Repository (FURR) The Itinerant Illustration: Creating storyworlds in the reader’s space Steve Braund Imagine if you will an illustrated story, comprising of still images and text, with all its characters, plotline and narrative tension, but the world of that story [the diegesis], extends outwards from the printed page [or e-book], into what I am going to call here, the reader’s space. This paper explores the storytelling potential of direct address [otherwise known as breaking the fourth wall], by which I mean moments where fictional characters look out from their still-image world, whether picture-book, graphic novel or comic, into ours. It will consider the possibility of creating fictional worlds by employing direct address to generate narrative in the real time and space of the reader. This phenomenon is at the core of games design, where, through interactivity, real-time moving-image and sound, aim to give their audience the experience of actually being in the story itself. According to Professor of Digital Games, Tanya Krzywinska, ‘Digital games trade on putting you in a position of the “other”, on inhabiting a character’s perspective, on presenting multiple points of view.’ There are many examples like Minecraft, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft that demonstrate the storytelling prowess of digital gaming. There are games you can play, put down and return to, like Everquest, DOTA and League of Legends, known as jump-in, jump-out games. And one of the best examples is the earlier PS Vita system game, Tear-away, where the hand-held device has a back-plate and hand-roll for the players fingers, which then appear within the game transposed onto the screen along with real-time video of their face as they play. -

Rupert Neelands Antiquarian Book and Manuscript Specialist Alice in Wonderland Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), known to all by his pseudonym of Lewis Alice Pleasance Liddell, Carroll, was born into a high-church Anglican family living in Cheshire, the third aged seven, photo- graphed by Charles of eleven children. His father, also named Charles, obtained a double first in Dodgson in 1860 mathematics and classics at Christ Church, Oxford, and taught Mathematics at his college before marrying a cousin, Frances Jane “Fanny” Lutwidge from Hull, in 1827. Perpetual curate at Daresbury, Cheshire, from the year of his marriage, then from 1843, when his son was aged twelve, rector at Croft-on-Tees in Yorkshire, Charles Dodgson was the devout author of twenty-four books on theology and religious subjects. The son was a humourist. He possessed the natural ability to amuse children, and first practised storytelling, versifying, and punning on his own siblings. With this comic ability came the unshakeable gravitas of excelling at mathematics. Like his father, Charles junior read and taught mathematics at Christ Church, taking first class honours in the subject in 1854 and a second in classics. His exceptional talent Charles Lutwidge won him the Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship in 1855, and he remained a Dodgson at Christ mathematical professor until 1881. Church 1856-60 (John Rich Album, NPG) Charles’s jokes were rather literary or donnish in nature. His pseudonym, first used in March 1856 for publication of a poem on “Solitude”, was a piece of linguistic drollery, a translation of his own name into Latin as Carolus Ludovicus. -

Carroll’s physical deformities, partial deafness, and irrepressible stammer made him an unlikely candidate for producing one of the most popular and enduring children’s fantasies in the English language. Carroll’s unusual appearance caused him to behave awkwardly around other adults, and his students at Oxford saw him as a stuffy and boring teacher. Underneath Carroll’s awkward exterior, however, lay a brilliant and imaginative artist. Carroll’s keen grasp of mathematics and logic inspired the linguistic humor and witty wordplay in his stories. Additionally, his unique understanding of children’s minds allowed him to compose imaginative fiction that appealed to young people. In 1856, Carroll and met the Liddell family. During their frequent afternoon boat trips on the river, Carroll told the Liddells fanciful tales. Alice quickly became Carroll’s favorite of the three girls, and he made her the subject of the stories that would later became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Munro 1870-1916 Bios http://www.litgothic.com/Authors/saki.html Up to now, little has been known about Hector Hugh Munro except that he used the pen name “Saki”; that he wrote a number of witty short stories, two novels, several plays, and a history of Russia; and that he was killed in World War I. His friend Rothay Reynolds published “A Memoir of H. H. Munro” in Saki’s The Toys of Peace (1919), and Munro’s sister Ethel furnished a brief “Biography of Saki” for a posthumous collection of his work entitled The Square Egg and Other Sketches (1924). A. J. Langguth’s Saki is the first full-length biography of the man who, during his brief writing career, published a succession of bright, satirical, and sometimes perfectly crafted short stories that have entertained and amused readers in many countries for well over a half-century. Hector Munro was the third child of Charles Augustus Munro, a British police officer in Burma, and his wife Mary Frances. The children were all born in Burma. Pregnant with her fourth child, Mrs. Munro was brought with the children to live with her husband’s family in England until the child arrived. Frightened by the charge of a runaway cow on a country lane, Mrs. Munro died after a miscarriage. Since the widowed father had to return to Burma, the children — Charles, Ethel, and Hector — were left with their Munro grandmother and her two dominating and mutually antagonistic spinster daughters, Charlotte (“Aunt Tom”) and Augusta. This situation would years later provide incidents, characters, and themes for a number of Hector Munro’s short stories as well as this epitaph for Augusta by Ethel: “A woman of ungovernable temper, of fierce likes and dislikes, imperious, a moral coward, possessing no brains worth speaking of, and a primitive disposition. -

Within the academic discipline of mathematics, Dodgson worked primarily in the fields of geometry, linear and matrix algebra, mathematical logic, and recreational mathematics, producing nearly a dozen books under his real name. Dodgson also developed new ideas in linear algebra (e.g., the first printed proof of the Kronecker-Capelli theorem,) probability, and the study of elections (e.g., Dodgson's method); some of this work was not published until well after his death. -

Dr Mel Gibson. Literacy Consultant and Senior Lecturer, University of Northumbria. Graphic novels, comics and manga can play an important part in encouraging reading for pleasure amongst students of any age and also have a role in teaching in many subject areas. I’m going to offer a small snapshot of the least well known of these, manga, below, but want to start with a few general points about the comic strip medium. Graphic novels, comics and manga are often seen as texts specifically for younger male reluctant readers, but such an assumption underestimates this enormously flexible medium, as it can be used to create complex works of fiction or non-fiction for adults and young adults, male and female, as well as humourous stories for the very young. The comic strip has been used to create a range of work that encompasses the superb Alice in Sunderland, by British creator Bryan Talbot, which explores memory, history and the nature of narrative, drawing on poetry, plays and novels, as well as other comics from around the world, as well as the slapstick humour of The Beano, with it’s cross-generational appeal and playful approach to language and image. It also includes television spin-offs, most notably, perhaps, The Simpsons and Futurama, which offer clever, witty takes on family, relationships and media, as well as genres that have generated spin-offs in other media, like superhero comics, themselves capable of addressing a huge range of ages and abilities. -

Lewis Carroll: Author, Mathematician, and Christian David L. Neuhouser Mathematics Department Taylor University Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), better known as Lewis Carroll, is best known as the creative and imaginative author of the Alice stories, but he was also a mathematician at Christ Church College, Oxford University and a devout Christian. His mathematics, especially mathematical logic, contributed much to the charming “nonsense” in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. However, his Christian thought is not evident in those books. In fact, they contain many parodies of morality poems for children. As a result of reading just these books, one might conclude that he was not even interested in morality. But to those who knew him personally, he seemed to be a rather pious, stodgy person. Also, he wrote essays and letters in defense of morality and Christianity as well as books and articles on mathematics. His writings on morality showed little of his literary imagination and his writings on mathematics give no indication of his Christianity. Only in Sylvie and Bruno and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded did Dodgson attempt to bring his literary creativity, mathematics, and Christianity all together in one artistic creation. This paper will attempt to answer the following questions. What motivated him to make this attempt and how successful was it? The Alice stories were the first really successful children’s stories which did not have obvious moral teachings. They were just for fun. However he wrote articles and letters against “indecent literature,” joking about sacred things, and immorality in plays. Some projects that he planned but never completed were: selections from the Bible to be memorized, selections from the Bible with pictures for children, and selections from Shakespeare with inappropriate content for young girls deleted. -

The Other Side of the Lens: Lewis Carroll and the Art of Photography during the 19th Century is curated by Edward Wakeling, Allan Chapman, Janet McMullin and Cristina Neagu and will be open from 4 July ('Alice's Day') to 30 September 2015. The main purpose of this new exhibition is to show the range and variety of photographs taken by Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Dodgson) from topography to still-life, from portraits of famous Victorians to his own family and wide circle of friends. Carroll spent nearly twenty-five years taking photographs, all using the wet-collodion process, from 1856 to 1880. The main sources of the photographs on display are Christ Church Library, the Metropolitan Museum, New York, National Portrait Gallery, London, Princeton University and the University of Texas at Austin. The Afterlife of Alice in Wonderland Alice Ever After “Well! What are you?” said the Pigeon. “I can see you’re trying to invent something. “T—I’m a little girl,” said Alice, rather doubtfully, as she remembered the number of changes she had gone through that day. “A likely story indeed!” said the Pigeon, in a tone of the deepest contempt. Likely or not, Lewis Carroll’s story of Alice — first told in two volumes, Alice ’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871) — has delighted readers across centuries and continents. Lewis Carroll is said to be the most quoted author after Shakespeare, and Alice his best-known creation and indeed one of our most cherished child icons. Only Peter Pan rivals Alice in popularity and cultural diffusion. Like J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland (a title never used by Carroll) is known by all, even by — perhaps especially by — those who have never read the original texts. Most people recognize not only Alice but also the larger Wonderland menagerie: the caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Hatter (not titled “Mad” in Carroll), and the Mock Turtle. Characters from Through the Looking Glass are equally famous: the Red Queen, the Jabberwocky, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum. Carroll’s original texts are now encountered more often in the context of university courses on children’s or Victorian literature, while many of us know Alice primarily through picturebook retellings, or the animated Disney film, or other variations or revisitations. As early as 1869, other authors tried their hand at A/ice stories, sometimes challenging Carroll’s themes and attitudes, sometimes confirming them.
