  • A Non Linear Approach Towards Automated Emotion Analysis in Hindustani Music
A NON LINEAR APPROACH TOWARDS AUTOMATED EMOTION ANALYSIS IN HINDUSTANI MUSIC Shankha Sanyal*1,2, Archi Banerjee1,2, Tarit Guhathakurata1, Ranjan Sengupta1 and Dipak Ghosh1 1Sir C.V. Raman Centre for Physics and Music, 2Department of Physics Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] ABSTRACT: In North Indian Classical Music, raga forms the basic structure over which individual improvisations is performed by an artist based on his/her creativity. The Alap is the opening section of a typical Hindustani Music (HM) performance, where the raga is introduced and the paths of its development are revealed using all the notes used in that particular raga and allowed transitions between them with proper distribution over time. In India, corresponding to each raga, several emotional flavors are listed, namely erotic love, pathetic, devotional, comic, horrific, repugnant, heroic, fantastic, furious, peaceful. The detection of emotional cues from Hindustani Classical music is a demanding task due to the inherent ambiguity present in the different ragas, which makes it difficult to identify any particular emotion from a certain raga. In this study we took the help of a high resolution mathematical microscope (MFDFA or Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis) to procure information about the inherent complexities and time series fluctuations that constitute an acoustic signal. With the help of this technique, 3 min alap portion of six conventional ragas of Hindustani classical music namely, Darbari Kanada, Yaman, Mian ki Malhar, Durga, Jay Jayanti and Hamswadhani played in three different musical instruments were analyzed. The results are discussed in detail. Keywords: Emotion Categorization, Hindustani Classical Music, Multifractal Analysis; Complexity INTRODUCTION: Musical instruments are often thought of as linear harmonic systems, and a first-order description of their operation can indeed be given on this basis.

Fained as the man who popularized Indian music in the West, his life has really been devoted to mu- tual exchange and enlightenment between all nations of the world. George Harrison dubs him the "Godfather of World Music." His 75th birthday was recently commemorated with the release of Ravi:In Celebration,a 4-CD box set spanning his ground-breaking career. He continues to perform in concert halls around the world and is currently readying his autobiography, Raga Mala. He was born Robindra Shankar in Benares, United Province, on April 7, 1920, the youngest of four brothers who survived to adulthood. His father Shyam Shankar was an eminent scholar, statesman, and lawyer but was absent for most of his childhood. The young Shankar (nicknamed "Robu") was therefore raised by his mother in some poverty. His eldest brother, the legendary dancer Uday Shankar, was already in Europe, dancing with Anna Pavolva before establishing his own Indian dance troupe.

CROSS-CULTURAL PEDAGOGY IN NORTH INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC by Michael Hale Oppenheim B.A., Kenyon College, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2012 © Michael Hale Oppenheim, 2012 !!" Abstract This thesis is an investigation of pedagogy in North Indian classical music. Historical, cultural, and philosophical elements of pedagogy in the Hindustani musical tradition are addressed in an overview of music education in traditional Indian contexts, the twentieth century, and in cross-cultural contexts. Themes include orality in Indian culture, the traditional guru-shishya parampara, the role of nationalism in twentieth century educational reforms, and the impact of technology in the latter half of the twentieth century. Trends in music education in India are then compared and contrasted with the state of education in Indian music in cross-cultural contexts in the West. From this data a model of the essential elements of Indian pedagogy is synthesized. This model accounts for pedagogical devices utilized to impart musical information as well as methods of transmitting cultural and social values. This model is applied to the experiences of five North American students of Hindustani music interviewed during the research process for this thesis. !!!" Preface This thesis was completed in accordance with the mandates of The University of British Columbia Behavioural Research Ethics Board. The

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract Thumri is a vocal genre in North Indian (Hindustani) art music. It was traditionally used in songstress-courtesan performance, in the early nineteenth century as an accompaniment to interpretive dance, and later as a lyrical and emotive song form. TTiumri is now one of the most popular genres in contemporary art music. The lyrics of thumri have not been the subject of extensive academic enquiry. This dissertation examines thumri texts from two perspectives: linguistic and contextual. It is primarily based on song texts collected during field work in North India in 1996-97, as well as on material transcribed from commercial recordings and printed sources.
