Anoushka Shankar Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 8:00pm This is the 939th concert in Koerner Hall Anoushka Shankar, sitar Ojas Adhiya, tabla Pirashanna Thevarajah, mridangam Ravichandra Kulur, flute Danny Keane, cello & piano Kenji Ota, tanpura Anoushka Shankar Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Her dynamic and spiritual musicality has garnered several prestigious accolades, including six Grammy Award nominations, recognition as the youngest – and first female – recipient of a British House of Commons Shield, credit as an Asian Hero by TIME magazine, an Eastern Eye Award for Music, and a Songlines Best Artist Award. Most recently, she became one of the first five female composers to have been added to the UK A-level music syllabus. Deeply rooted in the Indian classical music tradition, Shankar studied exclusively from the age of nine under her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar, and made her professional debut as a classical sitarist at the age of 13. By the age of 20, she had made three classical recordings for EMI/Angel and received her first Grammy nomination, thereby becoming the first Indian female and youngest-ever nominee in the world music category. She is also the first Indian artist to perform at the Grammy Awards. In addition to performing as a solo sitarist, her compositional work has led to cross-cultural collaborations with artists such as Sting, M.I.A., Herbie Hancock, Pepe Habichuela, Karsh Kale, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Joshua Bell, demonstrating the versatility of the sitar across musical genres.

Anoushka Shankar: Breathing Under Water – ‘Burn’, ‘Breathing Under Water’ and ‘Easy’ (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances The composer Anoushka Shankar was born in 1981, in London, and is the daughter of the famous sitar player Ravi Shankar. She was brought up in London, Delhi and California, where she attended high school. She studied sitar with her father from the age of 7, began playing tampura in his concerts at 10, and gave her first solo sitar performances at 13. She signed her first recording contract at 16 and her first three album releases were of Indian Classical performances. Her first cross-over/fusion album – Rise – was released in 2005 and was nominated for a Grammy, in the Contemporary World Music category. Her albums since Breathing Under Water have continued to explore the connections between Indian music and other styles. She has collaborated with some major artists – Sting, Nithin Sawhney, Joshua Bell and George Harrison, as well as with her father, Ravi Shankar, and her half-sister, Norah Jones. She has also performed around the world as a Classical sitar player – playing her father’s sitar concertos with major orchestras. The piece Breathing Under Water was Anoushka Shankar’s fifth album, and her second of original fusion music. Her main collaborator was Utkarsha (Karsh) Kale, an Indian musician and composer and co-founder of Tabla Beat Science – an Indian band exploring ambient, drum & bass and electronica in a Hindustani music setting. Kale contributes dance music textures and technical expertise, as well as playing tabla, drums and guitar on the album.

Women provide legitimacy to the political projects of the nation in particular social and historical contexts. This article focuses on the gendered symbolization of the nation through the rhetoric of the 'motherland' and the manipulation of this rhetoric in the context of national struggle in Bangladesh. I show the ways in which the visual representation of this 'motherland' as fertile countryside, and its idealization primarily through rural landscapes has enabled a crystallization of essentialist gender roles for women. This article is particularly interested in how these images had to be reconciled with the subjectivities of women raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War (Muktijuddho) and the role of the aestheticizing sensibilities of Bangladesh's middle class in that process. • Chapter 5 Tour of Usa in 1968
CHAPTER 5 TOUR OF USA IN 1968 A dynamic shift in India’s foreign policy occurred with the advent of Indira Gandhi, who took over the reins of the government in January 1966.1 India had by then been through two wars – the war that India was not successful in winning – the Sino – Indian War of October 19622 and the Indo – Pak War of 1965,3 which India won. The first war was during the time of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru while the second war took place during the tenure of India’s third Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. As mentioned in Chapter 2, during Nehru’s tenure, soft power was emphasized on, as with the legacy of poverty, left behind by the British, India was not really in a position to invest in hard power, and Nehru sought to develop relations between India and other nations essentially through various treaties of friendship. "Where Nehru had articulated India's national interests in high-flown phrases of world peace and cooperation, Indira stressed security, territory, and prestige…In contrast to her father's alleged "moralism," Indira Gandhi's actions are described as 'pragmatic".4 Given 1 https://www.pmindia.gov.in/en/former_pm/smt-indira-gandhi/ (Accessed: 15-03-2019) 2 Joseph R. • The Fallen Artist
Renata Del Rio Meints-Adail The Fallen Artist: The influence of John Milton‟s Paradise Lost on James Joyce‟s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Faculdade de Letras March 2009 Abstract This thesis is a study of the influence exerted by John Milton‟s Paradise Lost on James Joyce‟s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Its main character, Stephen Dedalus, narrates some remarkable passages of his life, through his childhood and young age, and his passage from a state of innocence to his first sinful experiences, being the first taken by the hands of a woman. This work focuses on Stephen‟s sins and repentance, his unwillingness to serve, his non serviam, and the whole course of his sins, in which I claim to have been influenced by Milton‟s characters in Paradise Lost, Adam, Eve, and Satan. The concepts and theories used to define influence used in this work are Harold Bloom‟s revisionary ratios, Patrick Colm Hogan‟s psychology and economy of influence, and Luiz Fernando Ferreira Sá‟s notion of influence as influx and inflow. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is Joyce‟s tentative to propose an alternative to the ones who choose not to serve, as Milton failed to do, and be a true artificer of wor(l)ds. CONTENTS 1.
