y Did you know that the patron of Ireland was born in another country? y was born in Scotland, around 385. His parents were Roman citizens, living in Britain. When Patrick was 14, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland, serving as a shepherd. While he was held captive, he learned the language and practices of his Druid captors. y At age 20, he escaped and headed to the coast. There, he found sailors who took him back to Britain. He began studying for the priesthood, became a Bishop, and returned to Ireland to preach the Gospel. y He preached and converted thousands in Ireland with his disciples, building churches all over the country. He served there for 40 years, dying on March 17, 461. y Saint Patrick’s Day is a solemn and holy day of obligation in Ireland, and is a celebration of Ireland itself. In the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated primarily as a cultural holiday, owing in part to the large Irish immigrant community here.

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
