  • The Other Greeks: Metaphors and Ironies of Hellenism in Livy’S Fourth Decade
THE OTHER GREEKS: METAPHORS AND IRONIES OF HELLENISM IN LIVY’S FOURTH DECADE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Douglas S. Freeble * * * * The Ohio State University 2004 Dissertation Committee: Professor Erik Gunderson, Adviser Approved by Professor Kirk Freudenburg, Co-Adviser ___________________________ Professor Sarah Iles Johnston Adviser Greek and Latin Graduate Program Copyright by Douglas Freeble 2004 ABSTRACT Already in the Praefatio of Livy’s work the metaphor of the importation of foreign influence is apparent. Livy chooses the annalistic narrative style as the most Roman form possible and a self -construction as an author who valorizes traditional Roman values. These authorial decisions on the modality of the narrative are intimately linked to tropology and the manufacturing of the metaphors and ironies that frame Livy’s text in books 31-45. Roman control in Thessaly is asserted by manufacturing communities in its image. These collapse miserably when the guiding Roman metaphors are questioned. The failure of Roman institutions is depicted as evidence of the restless nature of the Thessalians. A representative image of Thessaly is given in the character of Theoxena, a Thessalian exile who kills herself at a festival of Aeneas. Her story allows Romans to form an emotional bond with the Thessalians, although it maintains their essential alterity. The Galatian campaign of Manlius Vulso shows the dangers of Rome’s encounter with Hellenism. The Galatians are presented as Gallic-Greek hybrids who are no longer the great Gallic warriors of the past.

  • Byzantine Names for SCA Personae
1 A Short (and rough) Guide to Byzantine Names for SCA personae This is a listing of names that may be useful for constructing Byzantine persona. Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans. Please also note that this is compiled by a non-historian and non-linguist. When errors are detected, please let me know so that I can correct them. Additional material is always welcomed. It is a work in progress and will be added to as I have time to research more books. This is the second major revision and the number of errors picked up is legion. If you have an earlier copy throw it away now. Some names of barbarians who became citizens are included. Names from „client states‟ such as Serbia and Bosnia, as well as adversaries, can be found in my other article called Names for other Eastern Cultures. In itself it is not sufficient documentation for heraldic submission, but it will give you ideas and tell you where to start looking. The use of (?) means that either I have nothing that gives me an idea, or that I am not sure of what I have. If there are alternatives given of „c‟, „x‟ and „k‟ modern scholarship prefers the „k‟. „K‟ is closer to the original in both spelling and pronunciation. I. THE frontier of Pisidia, where it adjoins Lycaonia, is placed wrongly in my Histor. Geogr. Chs. Q and V. The district was little known, when I wrote: I had traversed it hurriedly in 1882, 1886, and 1890, in each case only on a single hasty route. The excursion of 1882 resulted in placing Anaboura and Neapolis.2 No name was discovered in the excursions of 1886 and 1890. Prof. Sterrett explored the district very carefully in 1884 and 1885 ; but the numerous inscriptions, which he found, unluckily did not contain important topographical in- dications, and he assigned a position much too far north for the city of Pappa-Tiberiopolis.3 I shared his view on this critical point, with the result that many other towns were drawn away far north of their true situation, because they stood in some relation to Pappa, and when it seemed to lie away in the north, they had to be placed correspondingly.

  • Map 65 Lycia-Pisidia Compiled by C. Foss (West) and S
Map 65 Lycia-Pisidia Compiled by C. Foss (west) and S. Mitchell, 1994 Introduction The map covers a large segment of south-west Asia Minor, extending from the southern edge of Phrygia in the north to the Mediterranean coastline. The most striking feature is the western extremity of the Taurus mountain range, which dominates the entire landscape of Pisidia and Lycia. In the north-east are the internally drained lake basins of Trogitis (Lake Suğla), Karalis (Lake Beyşehir), Lake Eğridir (E1-2, ancient name unknown), and Ascanius (Burdur Lake). The mountains to the south of these contain the sources of three major rivers, which flow down through Pisidia to the Pamphylian plain–the Melas, Eurymedon and Kestros. Both Pamphylia and Pisidia contained large populations in antiquity, occupying a dense network of city-states, up to ten in Pamphylia and over fifty in Pisidia. Pisidia was accessible by some of the most important routes of southern Asia Minor, in particular the road built by the first Roman proconsul of Asia, M’. Aquillius, between 129 and 126 B.C. from Pergamum (Map 56 E3) to Side (French 1991), and the Augustan Via Sebaste, which ran from Perge to Pisidian Antioch (Map 62 F5). The historical geography of this region has been much advanced in many recent studies–by Bean, Mitchell and Nollé especially (note the overview in Mitchell 1998b)–and the pace of discovery shows no signs of slowing. Current research by Turkish scholars is beginning to throw important new light on the border zone between southern Pisidia and eastern Lycia to the west of Attalea.
