Profitant de cette occasion, Nous vous adressons, nos tres chers Freres, quelques reflexions avec notre salut pastoral. I. - LA VIE DU SAINT DANS SON CADRE HISTORIQUE. Dans les epoques de ddcheance et decomposition de la societe, quand a cause des guerres et des luttes, tout mal s6vit sans obstacle et gagne en brutalite, jamais ne fait d6faut une heroique vertu. incarnde dans des personnalit s cui ont m6rite le nom de saints. Comme pour recompenser et consoler ses cnfants affliges et souffrants, la Proxidence envoic de grandes aines qui s'6l6vent au-dessus du mal en propagation, pour que ne soit pas 6teinte la lumiere de I'amour et de la foi dans le bien, reflet de la Toute Puissance et de la Justice de Dieu. Accabiee des consequences des luttes fratricides quand la haine poussait les hommes a tous les crimes, telle fut l'epoque de la vie et de I'activite de saint Vincent, incomparable dans I'exercice et dans I'organisation des ceuvres de charit6, fonda- teur de la Congr6gation des Pr&tres de la Mission et de la Compagnie des Filles de la Charite. En 1960, voilt trois cents ans depuis que saint Vincent de Paul a quitt6 cette terre pour recevoir la r6compense du Sei- gneur. Frangais d'origine, il naquit au village de Pouy, en Gascogne, dans une famille paysanne comptant six enfants. Son pere fut sans doute inspir6 de Dieu quand par la vente d'une paire de bceufs, il rendit possible a son fits i'acquisition d'une instruction convenable, n6cessaire pour atteindre le but telle- ment d6sir : le sacerdoce pour lequel il manifestait des dis- positions depuis sa jeune enfance. Mais il ne fut pas d'emblee le modble d'une saintet6 con- sommie ; il s'elevait, vers ces sommets, par degres, guid6 par - 4- la main paternelle de Dicu. Pour mettre au jour les valeurs cachees dans cette ame de pretre, la Providence se serit d'une douloureuse dpreuve. Le jeune pr6tre, pris par des pirates en mer, vendu comme esclave, passa deux annees dans cet etat, au milieu des musulmans a Tunis. Ressentant profon- dement la vanite de ce monde, il cherche I'union a Dieu, et rccourt a Notre-Dame qu'il prie avec ferveur. II ne fut pas ddqu, car il devient l'instrument de la grace de Dieu dans la conversion de son maitre, un renegat. Avec lui, il regagne sa patrie, et se rend a Rome, oih il rencontre le Vicaire du Christ et trouve le chemin de sa vie aupres des tombeaux des Saints Apotrcs. Arrive L Paris, il commence, dans differents posies, un service totalement d6vou6 A Dieu et au prochain. L'dpoque et les conditions dans lesquelles vivait saint Vincent de Paul n'etaient pas faciles. La France subissait de rudes secousses, causees par la guerre de Trente Ans et par des dissensions intCrieures qu'accentuaient la misere matdrielle et morale de la population. La mendicitd, surtout dans les xilles, s'averait un viritable fleau. Les maladies dpidcmiques rendaient plus profonde la d6tresse. La vie religieuse faiblissait, le niveau de la vie morale baissait egalement. II fallait un homme qui, par sa personnalite, suit reveiller les consciences et par son devouement, en vint a parler aux coeurs : et ainsi par ses actes et par son amour du prochain pfit montrer le chemin dvangdlique de la v6rit6 et dceIa charite. Cet homme provi- dentiel fut Vincent de Paul. II. - UNF PERSO\NALIIT QUI FIT EPOQUE. Saint Vincent de Paul s'enllamma de Iamour evangelique de Jesus-Christ qu'il vit dans son prochain, surtout dans les malheureux. A cette grande idee, il d6pensa toutes ses forces: Un jugement lucide, une observation perspicace, un sens excep- tionnel d'organisation, une maniere singulierement simple et pratique de comprendre toutes choses, une ardeur pour la vie interieure, une disposition pour tous les devouements et tous les sacrifices. II devint, pour sa generation, une nette revelation de l'amour surnaturel, actif, de Dieu et du prochain. Dans le cceur de saint Vincent, l'amour du prochain etait pleinement selon le Christ, il embrassait ]'homme tout entier, les besoins de son Ame et ceux de sa vie temporellc. En enveloppant dans cette pensde la gienration de son temps, Vincent repete, apres Notre-Seigneur: J'ai pitid de cette fodle (Marc VIII, 2). Et aussit6t, il se met l'ceuvre, organisant des Missions populaires qui font une puissante impression et intro- duisent les fid&les dans la voie d'une renaissance spirituelle. C'cst de ce besoin de la vie religieuse que naquit la Congregation des Pretres de la Mission. Tout en assurant aux ames la nourriture de la v6ritd, saint Vincent medite les movens d'offrir aux affames leur morceau de pain quotidien. II faut, disait-il, atteindre 'atime -5- ai tavers le corps. Aussi devint-il de regle que la oif les Mis- sions sont organisdes, fut en meme temps crdee une Confrerie de ia Charitd. Saint Vincent enseigne avec insistance qu'il ne sullit pas de se contenter d'apporter une offrande pour les pauvres, mais qu'il faut remettre le don, pcrsonnellement, I'adoucir par une bonne parole chrdtienne. Un r6seau toujours plus. serrd des Confrdries de la Charitd en vint A couvrir la Fiance. Pour les diriger, il fallut dtablir une Compagnie des Dames de la Charitd a Paris. Cette fondation suscita le besoin lie fonder un organisme permanent : la Compagnic des Fillcs ie la Charitd dont Louise de Marillac devint la premiere Supdrieure. Desormais, des institutions de charit6 se multi- plient, embrassant presque toutes les miseres humaines : petits abandonnds, orphelins de guerre, enfants trouvds, malades dans lesc hopitaux, infirmes dans leur domicile particulier, soldats blessds, forgats condamnes aux galeres, vieillards, filles de mamuaise vie, personnes atteintes de maladies mentales... Pendant les anndes de guerre, saint Vincent aid6 par les Steurs, organise des secours matdriels pour les provinces qu'at- teint la calamitd de la famine. II y envoie des grains pour les scmailles, et assiste les rdfugids disperses hors de leur pays natal. Pauvre lui-mime, avec sa soutane rapidcde, il dispose de millions qui passent par ses mains pour le bien des mal- hcureux. Ainsi mdrite-t-il le nom honorable de Pere des Pauvres, dc P&re de la Patrie. Et il devient I'inspiration du monde, appelant un chacun dans la voie de la charite chr6tienne. II a la vive consolation de pouvoir diriger ses fils et ses filles spirituels, Pretrcs de la Mission et Filles de la Charitd, i leurs tiches dvangdliques, meme au loin, en dehors de France. Ddjh, entre 1643 et 1646, les Pr&tres de la Mission ouvrent de leurs maisons en Italie, et, bient6t apres, ils se rendent en Irlande, en Ecosse. En 1651, invitees par la Reine de Pologne, Marie de Gonzague, les deux families de saint Vincent v-iermcnt peu apr&s A Varsovie oi elles developpent une bienfaisante activitd dans tous les domaines. Les Compagnies fonddes par saint Vincent se trouvent, apres trois cents ans de leur existence, en plein essor. Ses ceuvres restent durables, vivaces et fdcondes, parce qu'elles sont ndes de l'esprit de Dieu et qu'elles ont pu rdsister a I'epreuve de trois siecles. II les construisait sur le fondement indbranlable que demeure J6sus-Christ. Il ne cherchait que Lui, il ne vivait que pour Lui et par une fervente priere il Lui confiait toute fondation qu'il entreprenait. II se modelait sur le Seigneur dans sa vie quotidienne, se posant souvent la question: Comment Jesus-Christ agirait-il A ma place? III. - LA BIENFAISANCE. UNE NOTE DE L'EGLISE DANS L'HISTOIRE. L'activitd charitable de saint Vincent se joint, comme dans. une chaine unique, a la vocation de la Sainte Eglise. A cela rien -6- d'tonnant. Les travaux de charitd appartiennent bien aux taches fondamentales de l'Eglise qui, dtant le Corps Mystique du Christ, suit fidelement sa TUte. Jesus-Christ a passe en faisant le bien * (Actes X, 38). De mEme, notre Eglise veut, dans chaque generation, renouveler I'amour actif du divin Sauveur et venir au secours des hommes qui souffrent. L'Eglise, societd parfaite dans son domaine, garde le droit de se servir des indispensables moyens pour atteindre les buts qui lui sont propres. Et l'un des moyens n6cessaires pour cette realisation c'est sa bienfaisante activitd.

Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Photo, Melanie Gonzalez, Fort Ward Museum. ith the160th anniversary of the Marshall House incident this year, many will reflect on the first Union and Confederate casualties of W the Civil War. While Colonel Ellsworth and James Jackson center the story, less focus is placed on the makeup of Colonel Ellsworth’s regiment, the 11th New York Infantry, known as the Fire Zouaves. Though Zouave units were used by both sides during the Civil War, they were not American in origin. Starting in the 1830s, the French Army created a class of infantry regiments based on the dress and fighting style of North African cultures, like the Zouaoua tribe in Algeria. Unmistakable in a uniform of baggy trousers, short open-front jacket, sash and fez, the Zouaves distinguished themselves with a fast, agile, almost theatrical fighting style that earned them many accolades. Zouave units were used sporadically in Britain, Poland, Spain and Brazil, fighting in local disputes as well as the first and second World Wars. The last Zouave unit was disbanded from the French Army after the Algerian War in 1962. The “Blue and Gray” has become synonymous with the Civil War and led to the marginalization of Zouaves in American culture. The Zouaves found prominence during the war after the death of Colonel Ellsworth, when commemorative objects such as pins, envelopes, poetry and ceramicware, exploded onto the market.

For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year. Michael Taussig If one of the most “sacred” aims that man can set for himself is to acquire as exact and intense an understanding of himself as possible, it seems desirable that each one, scrutinizing his memories with the greatest possible honesty, examine whether he can discover there some sign permitting him to discern the color for him of the very notion of the sacred. —michel leiris, “The Sacred in Everyday Life” (1938) 1. The Face of World History “Men in a state of nature,” writes Goethe, “uncivilized nations, and children, have a great fondness for colours in their utmost brightness.” The same applied to the people of southern Europe, especially the women with their bright colored bodices and ribbons. He recalled a German officer, re- turned from America, who had painted his face with vivid colors in the manner of the Indians, the effect of which “was not disagreeable.” On the other hand, in his northern Europe during the early nineteenth century, people of refinement had a disinclination to colors, the women wearing white, the men, black. And not only dress. Such people avoided vivid colors in the objects around them and seemed inclined, he wrote, to banish vivid colors from their presence altogether.1 I see him in my mind’s eye, this German mercenary, promenading through the streets of Frankfurt fresh from God knows what violence he inflicted out there in America with wild Indians, half-breeds, and crazed Europeans trading furs for whisky along with rings and mirrors, brightly colored greatcoats trimmed with lace, and, of course, paints for face and body, as much for the corpse as for the living.

Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries continue to inspire millions of people all around the world, as is reflected in the sustained high numbers of visitors to both the museum and its website. In the past year, 2,165,000 art lovers from the Netherlands and abroad visited the museum, and our online fan base grew exponentially. After being officially opened by King Willem-Alexander during a celebratory event, the exhibition Van Gogh & Japan attracted an impressive 430,000 visitors, making it a great success. Van Gogh aspires was published last year, the Strategic Plan 2018-2020 outlining how the museum will work towards realising its Strategic Pillars in the years ahead. In its endeavours to deliver and uphold its mission, vision and core values, the museum focuses on three dimensions: local, global and digital.
