F$160 millions (16 years ago) Is this a free market competitive price? by Vincent Van Gogh 1 Vincent Van Gogh (1853 to 1890) From a website devoted to his works: The son of a Dutch pastor, brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere, Vincent was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, van Gogh had two unhappy romances, worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage (a mining district in Belgium), where he was dismissed for “overzealousness”. He remained in Belgium to study art. The works of his early Dutch period are somber-toned, sharply lit, genre paintings of which the most famous is "The Potato Eaters" (1885). In that year van Gogh went to Antwerp where he discovered the works of Rubens and purchased many Japanese prints. 2 His life In 1886 he went to Paris to join his brother Théo, the manager of Goupil's gallery. In Paris, van Gogh studied with Cormon, inevitably met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the Impressionists. His nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art. Gauguin did join him but with disastrous results. In a fit of epilepsy, van Gogh pursued his friend with an open razor, was stopped by Gauguin, but ended up cutting a portion of his ear lobe off.

Booth Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of Warwick, Department of Theatre Studies. August, 1984. ABSTRACT This study of Ibsen in England is divided into three sections. The first section chronicles Ibsen-related events between 1872, when his work was first introduced to a Briton, and 1888, when growing interest in the 'higher drama' culminated in a truly popular edition of three of Ibsen's plays. During these early years, knowledge about and appreciation of Ibsen's work was limited to a fairly small number of intellectuals and critics. A matinee performance in 1880 attracted praise, but successive productions were bowdlerized adaptations. Until 1889, when the British professional premiere of A Doll's House set all of London talking, the lack of interest among actors and producers placed the responsibility for eliciting interest in Ibsen on translators, lecturers, and essayists. The controversy initiated by A Doll's House was intensified in 1891, the so-called Ibsen Year, when six productions, numerous new translations, debates, lectures, published and acted parodies, and countless articles considered the value and desirability of Ibsen's startling modern plays.

We have probably seen some of Vincent Van Gogh’s 900 paintings in exhibits or books and can instantly recognize his art by the thick, heavily gestured brush strokes and saturated, sometimes screaming colors. Some attributed his intense painting style to his erratic mental state. All this is captured frame by frame (65,000 hand-painted drawings in total) using a technique that is actually a combination of live-action scenes, stop motion, traditional animation, and visual effects. 125 professional oil-painters from all over the world were carefully selected to tediously and expertly hand-paint each frame. The film took 6 years to complete. As the story unfolds, we meet the people in Van Gogh’s portraits and hear them talk about Vincent. We visit the places they live, (familiar scenes from his vibrant paintings) as part of Armand Roulin’s fictionalized journey to understand the mystery of Van Gogh’s death (suicide?) in 1890 at the age of 37 (he had only been painting for 10 years). The journey began at the request of Roulin’s father, a Postman, who wants Armand to deliver a letter to Theo, Vincent’s brother in Paris.

    A LITTLE TOUR IN FRANCE with ninety-four illustrations by JOSEPH PENNELL LONDON WILLIAM HEINEMANN 1900 Preface Preface The notes presented in this volume were gathered, as will easily be perceived, a number of years ago and on an expectation not at that time answered by the event, and were then published in the United States. The expectation had been that they should accompany a series of drawings, and they themselves were altogether governed by the pictorial spirit. They made, and they make in appearing now, after a considerable interval and for the first time, in England, no pretension to any other; they are impressions, immediate, easy, and consciously limited; if the written word may ever play the part of brush or pencil, they are sketches on "drawing-paper" and nothing more. From the moment the principle of selection and expression, with a tourist, is not the delight of the eyes and the play of fancy, it should be an energy in every way much larger; there is no happy mean, in other words, I hold, between the sense and the quest of the picture, and the surrender to it, and the sense and the quest of the constitution, the inner springs of the subject—springs and connections social, economic, historic. One must really choose, in other words, between the benefits of the perception of surface—a perception, when fine, perhaps none of the most frequent—and those of the perception of very complex underlying matters. If these latter had had, for me, to be taken into account, my pages would not have been collected.
