  • A Guide to Napa Valley Cult Wineries
HOME A Guide to Napa Valley Cult Wineries DRINK by WC STAFF on DECEMBER 22, 2015 34307 1 Made in small quantities and often sold for high prices, cult wines often earn high scores from top wine wine critics— Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. Many are made by famous “flying winemakers” (consulting winemakers who fly around the world making wine for top estates), although some are simply families who have farmed the land long enough to know how to draw the best out of it. Napa Valley has one of the highest concentrations of cult wines in the world, so we’ve laid out a list of some of the top Napa Valley cult wines, including both the established legends and the rising stars. The wines are almost always Cabernet Sauvignon—this is Napa Valley, after all—and are complex, densely structured, and absolutely beautiful to experience. Now if we could just get on that allocation list… The Legends Image Source: Harlan Estate Harlan Estate and BOND Estates Visit: Appointments may be available for members Founder Bill Harlan spares no expense to create these Napa Valley cult classics. Harlan comes from estate vineyards in the Oakville hills and has earned five 100 point scores from Robert Parker between 1994 and 2007. On the other side of the same coin, BOND aims to highlight the best terroir in Napa Valley with six wines created from six distinct single-vineyard sites. These wines are also Parker darlings; four 100 points scores from Robert Parker since 2000. The wines from both wineries are exquisite examples of Napa Valley at its best.

  • In the Early 1980S While Hiking Along Oakville's Southwestern Ridge, H
In the early 1980s while hiking along Oakville’s southwestern ridge, H. William Harlan discovered an isolated territory. The hidden expanse — ancient and untamed — moved him deeply, but remained elusive until the Harlan family finally captured it in 2008. As the second generation explored and worked with the land, they began to make discoveries of their own. At the core of this wild terrain they found a powerful geologic convergence, which had shaped its steep, rugged topography, and created the conditions for an altogether exotic winegrowing environment. Over time they found that the dramatic landscape — just beyond the edge of the known — would slowly change them, and ultimately inspire a new endeavor: Promontory. I. DISCOVERY – H. William Harlan As we evolve through the seasons of our lives, there is always the “missing piece” that draws us onwards… maybe it’s the challenge of the next vintage, the next level of enrichment, a new discovery, or a greater meaning. And at a certain point we start to look past our lifetime, with the hope that the next generation might, in their own way, go beyond the dreams we initiated. When I first came upon the land that would become Promontory, its untamed ruggedness was a surprise — quite different from anything I had encountered in the Napa Valley. This wild place, overlooked for most of the 20th century, emanated a power and a mystery and an undefinable allure. It wasn’t until the first decade of the 21st century that we had the good fortune of acquiring the unmarked territory. This was the beginning of a new era, a time of exploration and discovery led by the next generation.

  • Far-Niente-Press-Kit
FAR NIENTE: ONE OF THE NAPA VALLEY’S ORIGINAL 19th CENTURY STONE WINERIES Producer of possibly the oldest bottle of California wine Far Niente, renowned for its production of estate bottled Napa Valley Chardonnay, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, was one of Napa Valley’s original stone wineries at the time of its construction in the late 19th century. Today, more than 125 years, the winery stands as a stunning example of the region’s early winemaking heritage. Far Niente was founded in 1885 by John Benson, an original forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the artist Winslow Homer. Benson hired architect Hamden McIntyre, creator of the former Christian Brothers winery (now the Culinary Institute of America) and the Gustav Niebaum winery (today’s Inglenook winery), to design the building. Constructed against a hillside in western Oakville, Far Niente functioned as a gravity flow winery, gently moving the grapes through each stage of production. Benson named the winery “Far Niente,” taken from the Italian phrase “Dolce Far Niente,” meaning, “sweet to do nothing.” Far Niente prospered until its abandonment in 1919 with the onset of Prohibition, and was left untouched for sixty years until 1979, when Gil and Beth Nickel purchased the property and began a three- year renovation, restoring the winery to its original 19th century grandeur. Nineteen eighty-two marked the return of winemaking to Far Niente, with the harvest of the winery’s first Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay was also produced at the winery for the first time that year. Although Far Niente produced Chardonnay in 1979, 1980 and 1981, the wines were made at a warehouse in Sausalito.

  • Wine Like Many of the World’S Great Wines, Our Wine List Is Created to Reflect a Sense of Place
wine Like many of the world’s great wines, our wine list is created to reflect a sense of place. Cavallo Point sits at the gateway to California’s venerable North Coast, home to some of the world’s most renowned wine-growing regions. Our list celebrates the history of wine in California, and presents a vision of where it is going. From the state’s legendary wineries that laid the foundation, and the cult wines driving the mystique, to the small production, artisanal producers who are pushing the envelope of quality, we strive to tell the true story of wine in California. While we are passionate about the wines made here by our friends and neighbors, we would be remiss to ignore the incredible wines produced around the globe. The centuries old wine-making traditions brought here from the old-world have been built upon to become the California wine culture that we enjoy today. We pay homage to those traditions through our extensive collection of the finest wines produced throughout the world. The Cavallo Point wine list is comprised of over 2,200 selections from 25 countries, with vintages dating back to 1922. Our Sommeliers are always happy to offer their guidance and recommendations. If you have a special bottle from your cellar you would like to enjoy while dining with us, our corkage fee is $30.00 per 750ml, and we will gladly waive one corkage fee for each equivalent bottle purchased from our list. We thank you for coming to Cavallo Point, and are happy you can spend some time with us at this very special place.

  • Turnbull Wine Cellars the Evolution of Excellence
turnbull wine cellars the evolution of excellence In the world of fine wine, excellence is not measured in a single vintage. It is a goal to be continually strived for, taking decades to achieve. Over the course of more than 40 years, Turnbull Wine Cellars has evolved from being one of Oakville’s first wineries of the modern era to becoming one of its most revered producers of Cabernet Sauvignon. As a small, independent winery, the roots of Turnbull’s winemaking philosophy can be found in its four renowned estate vineyards, and its four- decade commitment to making estate-grown wines. Located on some of the most coveted land in Oakville and Calistoga, Turnbull’s historic mountain and valley-floor vineyards span more than 150 acres of vines, and are the foundation of the winery. Guided by fourteenth generation winegrower Peter Heitz, and one of the most passionate and accomplished vineyard teams in Napa Valley, Turnbull is dedicated to crafting small-production, terroir-driven expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as exceptional Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. In 1979, years before Oakville would earn its status as an American Viticultural Area, Turnbull was founded when attorney Reverdy Johnson and famed architect William Turnbull acquired a historic 20-acre vineyard and farm in the Oakville winegrowing region. That same year, Turnbull was officially bonded and produced its debut vintage of wine—a stately and sophisticated Cabernet Sauvignon made from the Turnbull Home Ranch Vineyard. Over the next decade, Turnbull continued to produce estate-grown wines showcasing the terroir of Oakville, and the winery’s Home Ranch.
