Congratulations on your acceptance to GIHE!
No doubt you have many questions about what you need to do before arrival, what life will be like on campus and in Switzerland. This Pre-Arrival guide is designed to answer those questions and put your mind at ease. For any other questions you might have, please do not hesitate to contact our Enrollment Management Department who will be happy to assist.
I would also strongly recommend that you join our Facebook group for new students (sign-up details in this guide). This is a great way for you to connect with some of your future classmates and make friends, before you arrive.

In this section, you will find information which helps you to plan your arrival in Switzerland. If you arrive before or after the official arrival dates, you may need to stay in a hotel and plan your route to the GIHE campuses. Here, we provide all the information needed to make your first days in Switzerland as enjoyable as possible. Please refer to the ‘to do’ documents to find out when your official arrival dates are and the actions you need to take.

Youth Hostels
The Swiss Youth Hostels organization is a non-profit organization and offers overnight stays at budget prices. They are situated in the most important cities and towns in Switzerland and offer you the possibility to stay in safe and comfortable environments with an international ambiance. With an international membership card for the Youth Hostels, you will save CHF 6.- per night. A one year membership costs CHF 33.-. Before checking into your room, everyone is required to sign a content and status inventory form. The keys will only be handed out after this process has been completed. CHECK-OUT
Upon departure, every student is required to return the room in the condition which they found it. The room must be completely emptied of personal belongings. Further details about check-out procedure will be given to you before the end of the semester.

The four national languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian, and Romansh. However, only three of these languages maintain equal status as official languages within the Federal Administration of the Swiss Confederation: German, French, and Italian. Native speakers number about 64% for German (mostly Swiss German dialects, though Swiss Standard German is used in writing and in a few official contexts in speaking), 20% for French (mostly Swiss French, but including some Arpitan dialects), 6.5% for Italian (mostly Swiss Italian, but including Lombard dialects), less than 0.5% for Romansh and 9% is made up of other languages. The German region (Deutschschweiz) is in the north and center, the French part (Romandie) in the west and the Italian area (Svizzera italiana) in the south. There remains a small Romansh-speaking native population in Graubünden in the east. The cantons of Fribourg, Bern and Valais are officially bilingual; Graubünden is officially trilingual. Both Gion campuses are located in the French speaking part of Switzerland.

WEATHER
Located in the heart of the Alps, Switzerland benefits from a temperate continental climate. Winters are not too cold in spite of some significant snowfalls and the temperature rarely goes below - 5°C. Summer is warm but not too hot, and generally remains below 30°C.
CURRENCY
The monetary unit of Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF), which is divided into 100 cents. While you are in Switzerland, currency can be easily converted at airports, railway stations, local banks and hotels. The rate of exchange will be best at airports, railway stations and banks; it is lowest at hotels. A fee is often added for the exchange of service – even at banks.

Switzerland, one of the world’s oldest democracies, is a confederation of 26 states, which are known as cantons. Each canton has its own government and capital city. Bern is the seat of the federal government with the ‘Bundeshaus’ (House of the Confederation) serving as the capital. The presidency is an unheralded position, which rotates annually.
RELIGION
Freedom of worship is practiced in Switzerland. Of the population, 35% adhere to various branches of the Protestant faiths. Roman Catholics make up 42% of the population, with the remaining belonging to other faiths.
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Switzerland is home to an impressive number of world headquarters of multi-national companies and international organizations such as the United Nations, the Red Cross, the World Trade Organization, the International Olympic Committee, and numerous sports federations and Non Government Organizations. Switzerland also enjoys a great reputation as a venue for international conferences. Highly prestigious events such as the World Economic Forum, which takes place every year in Davos, bear testimony to this fact.

The Swiss Romande region is a miniature version of Switzerland. Here you’ll find peaceful towns and cities bordered by Lake Geneva (Nyon, Morges, Lausanne, Montreux) and Lake Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains), the rolling wooded hills of the Jura (St-Cergue, Vallée de Joux, Sainte-Croix), the delightful green landscapes of the northern part of the canton (Echallens, Romainmôtier, Payerne, Avenches) and the snowy summits of the Alps with their majestic glaciers (Leysin, Les Mosses, Les Diablerets, Villars-Gryon, Château-d’Oex).

Not surprisingly, Glion’s unique location is the choice for many and Fribourg is 20 minutes by car on the motorway from Bulle. Students must be formally dressed, in compliance with the requirements of a position in the hospitality industry. The business dress code applies from Monday to Friday, from 07:00 to 17:30. After 17:30, tie and jacket are not required and students can dress ‘smart casual’ (see smart casual dress code below), except for students attending classes or if there is a formal event on the campus.
During weekends, students may wear more casual clothing unless banquets or other special events are planned (see casual dress code). However students must ensure that their dress remains representative of the school. Torn jeans, T-shirts with rude, sexist or discriminating connotations etc. are not allowed, nor are visible piercings.

In the interest of student health, GIHE has a firm stance on smoking, substance abuse and alcohol. Campuses are non-smoking with designated areas set aside for smokers. GIHE has a partnership with a local storage and transport company which allows students to store any objects or belongings for any period of time. The company will be present on campus at the beginning and end of each semester. Conditions and fees are agreed between the student and the storage company.

Personal and private insurance, to cover issues such as damage or theft of personal property are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. GIHE accepts no responsibility or liability for valuables left by students in their bedrooms or public areas. Students are encouraged to store their valuables in the individual safe deposit boxes provided in the rooms (if available), or in the campus reception safe. Students are strongly advised not to keep large amounts of cash in their bedrooms. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they have sufficient personal insurance to cover for the loss or theft of personal valuables as GIHE insurance does not cover any loss or theft.

Opening a bank account with a regular bank requires students to have their Swiss residence permit. However, student accounts can be opened at local post offices that do not require a Swiss residence permit.
