Executive summary: In October-November, the Romandy became a COVID19 hotspot in Switzerland and in Europe. Here we explore the reasons for this development by contrasting the development within different regions of Switzerland between mid-April and mid- November. Confirmed case data suggests that the Romandy became a hotspot due to higher incidence at the end of summer compared to the rest of Switzerland, and not due to faster growth of the epidemic during fall. Case numbers in the first half of November decreased fastest in the Romandy where also the strictest measures were implemented. The latest developments of the epidemic across regions are discussed in the Scientific Update (09.12.20). Main text The four cantons Vaud, Neuchatel, Geneva and Jura use French as the only official language and thus fully belong to the Romandy. The cantons Fribourg, Valais and Bern are officially bi-lingual (French and German). We perform analyses on the canton level below. In this document Fribourg and Valais are considered to be part of the Romandy, whilst Bern is not. Additionally, we consider the seven greater regions of Switzerland. Romandy is part of Lake Geneva Region and Espace Mittelland. The other five regions are Eastern Switzerland, Northwestern Switzerland, Central Switzerland, Zurich, and Ticino. All data presented in this document is publicly available data from the Federal Office of Public Health (confirmed case numbers) and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute (stringency).

    Media Release EMBARGO: 8 May 2019, 08.00am Page1 avenir special: “The Uniquely Dynamic Momentum of the Lake Geneva Region” As recently as the 1990s, the cantons of Geneva and Vaud were bringing up the rear in the Swiss economic rankings. But now they’re conspicuous for their diversified, internationally oriented, and resilient economy. Avenir Suisse’s analysis of the Lake Geneva region draws at- tention to a boom that has often gone more or less unnoticed in the rest of Switzerland, while also addressing the issues that remain unresolved. Anyone who believes that Zurich and Basel are the undisputed economic powerhouses of Switzer- land should cast a glance over the language divide. Over the last two decades, the Lake Geneva region has gathered powerful momentum on both the economic and social fronts. _ A good example is the impressive development of the region’s higher education. The univer- sities of Geneva and Lausanne and the EPFL Swiss Federal Institute of Technology account for 28% of all Swiss students. But they attract a disproportionately large share of the re- sources, with 34% of third-party research funding – and 43% of EU funding – flowing into the Lake Geneva region since 2010. Particularly attractive internationally is the EPFL, where around 50% of students enroll with a foreign qualification (compared with 33% at the ETH in Zurich). _ Start-up financing is another indicator of lively economic activity. Between 2013 and 2017 half of the venture capital invested in Switzerland was destined for the Lake Geneva region, with only one quarter going to the Zurich area.

Lake sediments are excellent natural archives of such mass movements and their study allows the reconstructions of these prehistoric events, such as the 563 AD large tsunami over Lake Geneva (Kremer et al, 2012). In Lake Geneva, more than 100 km of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles reveal the late Holocene sedimentation history. The seismic record shows a succession of five large lens-shaped seismic units (A to I), char- acterized by transparent/chaotic seismic facies with irregular lower boundaries, and interpreted as mass-movement deposits. These units are interbedded with parallel, continuous and strong amplitude reflections, interpreted as the ‘background’ lake sediments.
