Its biblical history is rich: it was first conquered by Joshua, and later became a main city of King Solomon. It is also believed to have been the site of King Ahab’s winter palace. Archaeological excavations have produced fascinating finds, including a restored Canaanite palace bearing signs of a huge fire attributed to Joshua’s conquest, a gate and walls from King Solomon’s time and the Israelite water system that was one of the engineering marvels of its day. ● Enjoy an easy stroll in one of the origins of the Jordan River at the famous National Park. We will walk along the clear and beautiful Dan stream, followed by a visit to the historical part of the national park. Admire the magnificent ruins that were discovered in the ancient city of Dan (the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel and belonging to the ). At this site, a special discovery was made in 1993: Tel Dan Stele is a broken stele (inscribed stone) that consists of several fragments making up part of a triumphal inscription in Aramaic, boasting Hazael of Aram-Damascus, an important regional figure in the late 9th century BCE victories over the king of Israel and his ally the king of the "House of David," the first time the name David had been found outside of the Bible. ● Breakfast at the hotel ● Drive to Mt. Ebal - the mountain is one of the highest peaks in the . Excavations of a large stone heap found at the top of the mountain revealed a large walled structure, infilled by layers of stone, ash, and earth; on the southwest are two paved areas split apart by a further wide wall with a surrounding oval wall. Slowly burnt bones of bullocks, goats, and fallow deer were found at the site. Some archaeologist believe this site fits the Biblical account of Joshua's altar (built by him after the Battle of Ai, and where the made peace offerings on it), while other scholars others believe it to be something else ● Lunch at a local restaurant (included) ● Optional (if time allows) - Tour archaeological remains on Mount Gerizim. The mountain is sacred to the Samaritans (a religion closely related to rabbinical Judaism and believe that their worship is the true religion of the ancient Israelites from before the Babylonian captivity) who regard it, rather than Jerusalem's Temple Mount, as having been the location chosen by Yahweh for a holy temple ● Stop for a short tour of Beth El, a site considered to be the location of the Biblical Bethel. The name is mentioned several times in Genesis, first as a place near where Abram stayed and built an altar on his way to Egypt and on his return, and more famously as the place where Jacob, fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau, falls asleep on a stone and dreams of a ladder stretching between Heaven and Earth and thronged with angels ● Drive to Jerusalem and check in your hotel ● Dinner at a local restaurant (included) ● Join together with Rabbi Reeves at the hotel and study in preparation for tomorrow Accommodations: Harmony Hotel OR Bezalel Hotel (B,L,D)

The village lies on the cliffs marking the edge of the Judean highlands, overlooking the Rift Valley, the Dead Sea, and the ancient city of Jericho. The climate is dry, with temperatures a few degrees warmer than Jerusalem all year round. This is a great spot to learn about the story of Moses’s death on Mt. Nevo (view towards Jordan), as well as the story of Joshua and the entrance of Israelites into Canaan, and the conquering of Jericho and the story of Elijah’s ascending to heaven in a chariot of fire ● Continue on to a short tour of Qumran - an archaeological site where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in caves. The territory was assigned to the tribe of Judah and became part of the Kingdom of Israel, and became the second largest city

after Jerusalem during the 1st Temple period. After much historical turbulence, the city finally fell to the Assyrian king Sennacherib in 701 BCE. In Sennacherib’s palace in Nineveh (modern-day northern Iraq) the Lachish relief was discovered: a set of Assyrian stone panels narrating the story of the Assyrian victory over the during the siege of Lachish ● Tour the nearby Khirbet Qeiyafa - The ruins of the fortress and might be the biblical city of Sha'arayim (one of the cities of the tribe of Judah) and that it might contain the ruins of King David's palace ● Visit Beit Guvrin National Park, the site where important artifacts dating back to the Roman Era were found.
