For anything to be meaningful, first it has to be useful; useful to both oneself and society. There are few subjects today that have been more useful to society than science. From science comes technology, which has arguably brought about the biggest change in society ever. Science and technology have freed humans to do more things, faster and more efficiently. This has resulted in a wealthier society, which, in return, gives us back time so that we could become more innovative. Today, innovation is the key factor that brings change - good or bad. Change is important, but is all change good? Can change bring us happiness? Would just learning facts and figures help us make better decisions in life or help solve complex problems? We believe that these are some of the very important questions that need to be answered, especially among the youth. They are to face a world that will change at a pace never seen before on Earth.

Schliemann et al. BMC Cancer (2020) 20:252 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12885-020-06742-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Change in public awareness of colorectal cancer symptoms following the Be Cancer Alert Campaign in the multi-ethnic population of Malaysia Désirée Schliemann1* , Darishiani Paramasivam2, Maznah Dahlui2,3, Christopher R. Cardwell1, Saunthari Somasundaram4, Nor Saleha Binti Ibrahim Tamin5, Conan Donnelly6, Tin Tin Su2,7 and Michael Donnelly1 Abstract Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) cases are detected late in Malaysia similar to most Asian countries. The Be Cancer Alert Campaign (BCAC) was a culturally adapted mass media campaign designed to improve CRC awareness and reduce late detection in Malaysia. The evaluation of the BCAC-CRC aimed to assess campaign reach, campaign impact and health service use. Methods: Participants aged ≥40 years (n = 730) from randomly selected households in Selangor State Malaysia, completed interview-based assessments. Campaign reach was assessed in terms of responses to an adapted questionnaire that was used in evaluations in other countries. The impact of the campaign was assessed in terms of awareness, confidence to detect symptoms and self-efficacy to discuss symptoms with a doctor as captured by the Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM). CAM was administered before-and-after campaign implementation and responses by BCAC recognisers (i.e. participants who recognised one or more of the BCAC television, radio or print advertisements when prompted) and non-recognisers (i.e. participants who did not recognise any of the BCAC advertisements) were compared analytically. Logistic regression analysed comparative differences in cancer awareness by socio-demographic characteristics and recognition of the BCAC materials.

  • CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction the Purpose of This
CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction The purpose of this descriptive study is to analyse the language used in Malaysian radio advertisements from two aspects - literary devices and vocabulary. This research aims to ascertain and provide evidence to the existence of literary devices in Malaysian radio advertisements. As for the vocabulary, two facets are investigated. Firstly, words and phrases that are frequently employed in the radio advertisement are looked into. Secondly, based on the findings of research done by Leech (1966), a comparison is done on the frequency of verbs and adjectives used in Malaysian radio advertisements. Leech‟s (1966) findings research revealed verbs such as make, get, give, have, see, go, come, buy, need, go know, keep and look were the most frequently used. As for adjectives new, free, fresh, delicious, good/better/best, full, sure, clean, wonderful, special, crisp, fine, big, great, real, easy, bright, extra, safe and rich were found to be frequently used in the same samples. As mentioned in the previous chapter, radio is ubiquitous and has a high level of penetration into the homes and lives of its users. As time goes by, radio advertisements are getting more creative and competitive in order to not only attract but to also be memorable in the hearts and minds of its listeners. 3.1 The Data The data for this research are radio advertisements in English. Thirty advertisements were used from two prominent radio stations in Malaysia. 29 3.1.1 Rationale for Data Source The radio stations which were chosen are hitz. fm and MIX fm.
