North Korea has the bomb and the ability to launch it. President Trump has recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel triggering fresh anger, pain and death. Global warming continues apace and David AttenboroughÊs Blue Planet has highlighted the crisis of plastic pollution in the worldÊs oceans. How can the Church respond to a changing and challenging world and to peopleÊs deep- seated fears and anxieties? We live in a world where there is a great deal of pain, distress, hatred and conflict. To suggest otherwise is at best naive and at worst dishonest. When so many are feeling insecure we need to assert and celebrate the certainty and constancy of GodÊs love for humanity and for all creation. Our response must be to preach the love of God displayed in his Son Jesus Christ. We might need to think about how we preach it, where we preach it and when we preach it, but we must preach it. Further we need to admit that as Christians we do not have all the answers and that our understanding of GodÊs world is partial and imperfect. But we still need to declare that we live in GodÊs creation, and that God relies on us to care for it, nurture it and ensure that its resources are both conserved and distributed fairly. Yes, we live in uncertain and disturbing times but we have received the blessings of GodÊs grace, we live in troubled times but we have experienced the freedom of GodÊs forgiveness, we live in dark times but God has sent his Son, the Light of the World to lighten our darkness. This Lent as the days get slowly longer focus on that light, seek that forgiveness and cherish that blessing.
