    The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era 15 (2016), 45–59 doi:10.1017/S1537781415000602 Kenneth Weisbrode ROOSEVELT’S MAN IN EUROPE Lewis Einstein (1877–1967) was a little-known diplomat who became one of Theodore Roose- velt’s closest advisers on European affairs. Roosevelt’s attraction to Einstein derived not only from a keen writing style and considerable fluency in European history, literature and politics, but also from his instinct for anticipating the future of European rivalries and for the important role the United States could play there in preserving peace. The two men shared a perspective on the twentieth century that saw the United States as a central arbiter and enforcer of international order—a position the majority of Americans would accept and promote only after the Second World War. The relationship between Roosevelt and Einstein sheds light on the rising status of American diplomacy and diplomats and their self-image vis-à-vis Europe at the turn of the twen- tieth century. Theodore Roosevelt presents a challenge for the diplomatic historian. Despite his repu- tation as a martinet, Roosevelt put much energy as president into peacemaking, and did well at it. The rationale and methods of his Great Power diplomacy are generally attrib- uted to his sense of mission and adventure, pursued as much for their own sake as for the advancement of his and his nation’s interests, largely in Asia and Latin America.1 Less appreciated has been a more subtle, and possibly grander, ambition, which was to pre- serve and augment the powers of maneuver—or what Americans have traditionally un- derstood as neutrality—in a twentieth-century geopolitical setting by proactive, rather than purely restrictive, means.

Dominating in England were not the categories of Immanuel Kant or the encyclopedic vision of Hegel, which – ironically – in their origins could be traced back to earlier sources in England, but the imagination of poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley and Byron as well as the all-encompassing vision of William Blake. Coleridge had studied in Germany, and his views show a clear impact of Kantian thinking. In the theories of John Keats beauty is identified with truth which later would be important for thinking about art. In the writings of Thomas Carlyle, who became a father-fig- ure to Ruskin, Goethe was introduced to the English audience. While Ruskin was completely ignorant of Kant and Hegel, he nevertheless had a world-wide influence on art theories in the l9th and 20th centuri- es. Maybe overrated in his own times, he has to be re-evaluated today and his position defined in harmony with contemporary ways of thin- king in the early 21st Century.1 1 Literature about Ruskin is extensive.     10/1/2019 John Ruskin - Wikipedia John Ruskin John Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was the leading John Ruskin English art critic of the Victorian era, as well as an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. His writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. He penned essays and treatises, poetry and lectures, travel guides and manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. He also made detailed sketches and paintings of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation. The elaborate style that characterised his earliest writing on art gave way in time to plainer language designed to communicate his ideas more effectively. In all of his writing, he emphasised the connections between nature, art and society. He was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century and up to the First World War. After a period of relative decline, his reputation has steadily improved since the 1960s with the publication of numerous Ruskin in 1863 academic studies of his work.
