Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia, Fakultas Ilmu Tarbiyah dan Keguruan. Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Pembimbing: Novi Diah Haryanti, M.Hum Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis tokoh Amba dalam novel Amba karya Laksmi Pamuntjak, dan implikasi novel Amba pada pembelajaran Sastra Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan analisisnya berbentuk deskripsi, tidak berupa angka-angka. Metode analisis ini digunakan untuk menelaah tokoh utama Amba dalam novel Amba karya Laksmi Pamuntjak. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pembacaan dan penyimakan novel Amba karya Laksmi Pamuntjak secara cermat, terarah, dan teliti. Pada saat melakukan pembacaan tersebut, penulis mencatat data-data masalah yang terkait dengan tokoh Amba, dan mencatat kutipan-kutipan yang menggambarkan tentang karakter tokoh. Berdasarkan hasil analisis tampak penulis menggunakan teknik pelukisan tokoh secara tidak langsung untuk menganalisis tokoh Amba. Dalam teknik ini diuraikan menjadi delapan teknik, di antaranya teknik cakapan, tingkah laku, pikiran dan perasaan, arus kesadaran, reaksi tokoh, reaksi tokoh lain, pelukisan latar, dan teknik pelukisan fisik. Melalui teknik ini ditemukan sifat Amba keras kepala, berkemauan keras, netral dalam berpolitik, acuh, dan tidak putus asa. Beberapa sifat Amba ini dapat diimplikasikan terhadap pembelajaran Sastra di SMA. Dalam pembelajaran ini, kompetensi yang harus dicapai peserta didik ialah menganalisis teks novel baik secara lisan maupun tulisan, dengan menjelaskan unsur-unsur intrinsik dalam novel serta menemukan karakter tokoh yang positif ataupun negatif yang terkandung dalam novel. Selain itu, peristiwa yang terjadi di Indonesia tahun 1965 dijadikan klimaks latar novel Amba. Akibat pemberontakan yang terjadi tahun 1965 juga berimbas kepada tokoh utama dalam novel. Advisor: Diah Novi Haryanti, M.Hum This study aims to analyze the characters Amba in the novel Amba by Laksmi Pamuntjak works, and the implications of the novel Amba in learning Indonesian language and literature. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis shaped the description, not the form of numbers. This analysis method is used to examine the main character in Amba novel Pamuntjak Laksmi works. Data collection techniques in this study using libraries, data recording, and analysis. Based on the analysis looks writers used the technique of painting figures indirectly to analyze figures Amba. In this technique elaborated into eight techniques, including techniques conversations, behaviors, thoughts and feelings, stream of consciousness, character reactions, reactions of other characters, background painting, painting techniques and physical. Through this technique found the nature of Amba stubborn strong-willed, neutral in politics, indifferent, and do not despair. Some of these properties can be implied Amba towards learning Indonesian language and literature at school. In this study, competency to be achieved is to learners analyze a novel text both orally and in writing, to explain the intrinsic elements in the novel and find a positive character or a negative figure contained in the novel. Additionally, events that occurred in Indonesia in 1965 used a novel background Amba climax. As a result of the uprising in 1965 also affected the main character in the novel. Story on Buru Island and Java also be in the background of this novel.     ANNUAL REPORT 2006 The International Writing Program at The University of Iowa 1 Greetings, I am pleased to send you the annual report of the International Writing Program (IWP), which for nearly forty years has offered a unique residency for professional writers from around the world. The literary community created by the IWP, a community of poets, fiction writers, essayists, playwrights and screenwriters from more than 120 countries, stands as a testament to the myriad ways in which service to the word, in every language, can help to bridge differences between peoples and nations divided. Only connect—the governing idea of the program—means that we devote the fall to connecting writers to readers, translators, students and people from every background. And this report offers a glimpse into some of the connections that last year’s writers made. I am also pleased to tell you that the IWP is evolving in a dynamic fashion. In 2006 we hosted our first symposium on the Greek island of Paros, bringing together writers from every corner of the earth to discuss what we hold in common. A Greek film maker made a documentary about the symposium and an e-book of the essays written for the occasion is in the works. As I write these lines we are preparing not only for another symposium, on the subject of justice, but also for a tour of the Middle East designed to introduce some of America’s most prominent writers to their counterparts in Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. In the spring of 2008, in partnership with the University of Iowa’s Young Writers Studio, we will launch a project called Between the Lines, bringing a dozen high school students from six Arabic-speaking countries to take part in a summer writing workshop, which we expect to deepen our connection to this strategic part of the world, creating new networks of writers and readers.

Koiri2 Universitas Negeri Surabaya [email protected], [email protected] Abstract The word "beautiful" is closely addressed to women. The standardization of beauty attached to women by a patriarchal society has become an issue that is still strongly opposed by feminists. The feeling of being less attractive and less-loved will grow in the women’s minds who are deemed less or do not meet the beauty standard in the patriarchal society. This study is aimed: (1) to discuss beauty standards set forward by a patriarchal society represented through an epic literary work, a novel by Laksmi Pamuntjak entitled The Question of Red, and (2) to identify how the character Amba redefines beauty in Laksmi Pamuntjak's The Question of Red. This study applies literary criticism to achieve satisfactory results, which refers to feminists' "reading as women." This study indicates that patriarchal society's beauty standard is represented by depicting Amba's appearance that is different from the physical depiction of the mother and the sister who always have a beautiful appearance. Besides, Amba believes that the beauty standard is a catastrophe that unwittingly harms women. Moreover, beauty is not always just about appearance.     Spring Literature Festival Cultural Confluences Saturday, 7 March 2015 10am - 8pm CENTRES & PROGRAMMES OFFICE SOAS, University of London Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG www.soas.ac.uk Culture is one of the most complex and contested words in the dictionary. With meanings encompassing both artistic endeavour and the broader fabric of everyday life, culture has recently been a site of conflict; it has been elevated to a definitive marker of identity by some, while cultural difference has been cited by others as the main source of dissension and conflict in the world today. This one-day literary festival brings together writers from a number of cultural background, all of whom have interrogated in their work the nature of culture and intercultural experience. As well as forming their subject matter, culture envelops the processes by which their work is circulated and consumed. Their experience as creators of culture also gives them a unique insight into the processes and pitfalls of producing literary art in the modern world. At the Spring Literature festival writers will read from and be in conversation about their recent publications. Books will be available for purchase on the day. Not unnoticed has been their common use of sex and sexuality as a prominent component of their writings. Many of the authors have been labelled with the term sastrawangi1; a friendly but patronizing and slightly derogatory label. The following critique illuminates the more important but previously un-investigated facets of literature from this generation of authors and brings to light the works of some authors that, due to the authors‟ avoidance of sex and sexuality, have been overlooked as subjects of criticism.
