A recent publication — Nicholas Ostler’s Empires of the Word (2005) — presents itself in its subtitle as A Language History of the World. Understandably, it deals extensively with what it calls “world languages”, languages which play or have played important roles in world history. An introductory chapter addresses, already in its title, the question “what it takes to be a world language”. The title also provides a provisional answer, viz. “you never can tell”, but the discussion goes beyond mere despair. It opposes the “pernicious belief” which finds expression in a quote from J. R. Firth, a leading British linguist of the mid-twentieth century (p. 20): “World powers make world languages [...] Men who have strong feelings directed towards the world and its affairs have done most. What the humble prophets of linguistic unity would have done without Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English, it it difficult to imagine. Statesmen, soldiers, sailors, and missionaries, men of action, men of strong feelings have made world languages. They are built on blood, money, sinews, and suffering in the pursuit of power.” Ostler is of the opinion that this belief does not stand up to criticism: “As soon as the careers of languages are seriously studied — even the ‘Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English’ that Firth explicitly mentions as examples — it becomes clear that this self-indulgently tough-minded view is no guide at all to what really makes a language capable of spreading.” He continues on the following page (p. -

Thus, the first question must be what is or constitutes such a conceptual system, and the second, which fields of knowledge does this conceptual system create in the process of historical and geographical diffusion. In addition, the sec- ond question must also address the processes of diffusion and how the modes of knowledge are communicated. The basic tenet of Buddhism is the idea of impermanence, relativity and the philosophical premise that nothing is absolute and eternal: existence is an everlast- ing flux, and each entity is dependent on another. -

Box 12728 Kapan VDC, Ward No. 6 Kathmandu, Nepal [email protected] [email protected] The Amitabha Foundation Retreat Center is presently being built on a mountain top in Kopan, located approximately 8 km from Boudhanath Great Stupa, in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. It will be open to Buddhist practitioners of all paths. The main structure is built upon the highest point on the hill, designed like a mandala. This, as well as the registered name of Amitabha Foundation, is the reason for the retreat center’s special name “Opak Kyilkhor Chöling” (The Amitabha Mandala Dharma Center). Within the retreat center, there will be a total of sixteen temples both large and small. The following is a detailed description of each temple's dharma objects and of each temple's daily, monthly and yearly rituals. 1. TSOKHANG TASHI GOMANG - THE MAIN TEMPLE The Tashi Gomang Main Temple will have Buddha Amitabha as its main deity at the center, with Guru Padmasambhava to the right and Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön, the founder of the Drigung order, to the left. There will be two stupas, The Namgyal Chöten or “Victory Stupa” to the right and the Changchub Chöten or “Enlightenment Stupa” to the left. Above the Namgyal Chöten to the right there will be images of Buddha Vajradhara with Tilopa and Naropa, and to the left there will be the deities of Long Life: Tsepame, Namgyalma and White Tara. Above the Changchub Chöten there will be Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa to the right and Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri and Vajrapani to the left. -

In the interval many important books dealing with Hinduism and Buddhism have appeared, but having been resident in the Far East (with one brief exception) since 1912 I have found it exceedingly difficult to keep in touch with recent literature. Much of it has reached me only in the last few months and I have often been compelled to notice new facts and views in footnotes only, though I should have wished to modify the text. Besides living for some time in the Far East, I have paid many visits to India, some of which were of considerable length, and have travelled in all the countries of which I treat except Tibet. I have however seen something of Lamaism near Darjeeling, in northern China and in Mongolia. But though I have in several places described the beliefs and practices prevalent at the present day, my object is to trace the history and development of religion in India and elsewhere with occasional remarks on its latest phases. I have not attempted to give a general account of contemporary religious thought in India or China and still less to forecast the possible result of present tendencies. -

The article has three main parts. First, by way of introduction I explore the history of Buddhist scripture and a few of the different ways in which scripture was defined and classified in the early period. In the second section I use the common division into three ‘baskets’ of scripture (discourses, monastic discipline and higher teachings) to structure a closer look at some of the main genres of early Buddhist texts. -

ALVAPPILLAI VELUPPILLAI* The Hindu Confrontation with the Jaina and the Buddhist Saint Tiruñãnacampantar's Polemical Writings 1. Introduction The history of Tamilnadu is fairly clear for a little more than two thousand years. There is an abundant output of literary works and considerable epigraphical material in a continuous tradition throughout this period. For the first six hundred years of the Christian era, epigraphical material is meagre. The available epigraphical material refers to the presence of Jaina monks in caves, thickly concentrated around Madurai at the initial stage and then scattered to all the different regions of Tamilnadu. Circumstantial evidence points to the presence of Buddhist and Ajivaka monks also in Tamilnadu during that ancient period (Mahalingam: 1967, 161-192; Mahadevan 1970: 14). It is a matter for surprise that the Carikam literature, the most ancient phase of Tamil literature, generally ascribed to the first three centuries of the Christian era, is secular in character (Zvelebil 1974: 7). In this literature there are clear references to Brahmins and Vedic sacrifices, as well as some forms of indigenous worship, besides some references to Hindu Gods (Vithiananthan 1954: 106-152). Attempts have been made to trace Jaina, Buddhist and Ajivaka influence in Cankam literature, but such influence does not seem to be significant. The picture of religious history in Tamilnadu undergoes a change in the Post-Cankam period, covering the second three hundred years of the Christian era. For some time there was political turmoil in Tamilnadu and there was what was sometimes referred to as the Dark Age of the Kalabhra Interregnum (Nilakanta Sastri 1966: 144). -

It bases these investigations on the critical examin- 7 ation of original texts, placing them strictly within soteriological 8 contexts. 9 While focusing on language use, the study also reveals some import- 20111 ant truths about the two traditions, and challenges many conven- 1 tional understandings of them.
