Bibliography 52 V PREFACE This book is intended to serve as a framework for the ancient history of Indonesia in a concise form. Published for the first time more than a decade ago as a booklet in a modest cyclostyled shape by the Cultural Department of the Indonesian Embassy in India, it has been revised several times in Jakarta in the same form to keep up to date with new discoveries and current theories. Since it seemed to have filled a need felt by foreigners as well as Indonesians to obtain an elementary knowledge of Indonesia's past, it has been thought wise to publish it now in a printed form with the aim to reach a larger public than before. -
Ashtanga Yoga Yama (Principles) Niyama
ASHTANGA YOGA The basis of Ashtanga yoga is the Yoga sutras (Sanskrit Verses) of Patanjali. We will consider the different aspects of yoga while remaining under the guiding principles of Patanjali's Yoga (Ashtanga yoga). The Asana, Pranayama, Dharana, Dhyan & Samadhi or the Yama and Niyama are systematically described by Patanjali in his Sanskrit Sutras (verses). YAMA (PRINCIPLES) NIYAMA (PERSONAL DISCIPLINES) ASANA (YOGA POSITIONS OR YOGIC POSTURES) PRANAYAMA (YOGIC BREATHING) PRATYAHARA (WITHDRAWAL OF SENSES) DHARANA (CONCENTRATION ON OBJECT) DHYAN (MEDITATION) SAMADHI (SALVATION) HATHA YOGA The term Hatha Yoga has been commonly used to describe the practice of asana (postures). The syllable 'ha' denotes the pranic (vital) force governing the physical body and 'tha' denotes the chitta (mental) force thus making Hatha Yoga a catalyst to an awakening of the two energies that govern our lives. More correctly the techniques described in Hatha Yoga harmonise and purify the body systems and focus the mind in preparation for more advanced chakra and kundalini practices. The Hatha Yoga system includes asana along with the six shatkarmas (physical and mental detox techniques), mudras and bandhas (psycho-physiological energy release techniques) and Pranayama (pranic awakening practices). Jesus-Buddha-Krishna: Still Present?
JESUS-BUDDHA-KRISHNA: STILL PRESENT? Paul F. Knitter PRECIS The intent of this article is to elaborate a moie adequate understanding of the presence of Christ in Word and Sacrament, which will then make possible a more productive dialogue with Hinduism and Buddhism. Foundational to this investigation is contemporary theol ogy's understanding of symbol-myth. First it is shown how, on the basis of what is being said about myth and symbol, the real presence of Christ in the Christian community can be understood meaningfully and coherently as a mythic-symbolic presence. This refocuses the problem of the relation between the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith. It means that Christianity must move beyond "historicism"-the attitude that equates the real with the factual. More precisely, it implies that the experience of salvation is not mediated through historical events in themselves but insofar as they are "mythified": symbols save; historical events (as events) do not Christianity therefore can be said to be based on "mythistory," not just history. Various objections to this apparent mythification of Christianity are considered; the abiding importance of the historical Jesus is maintained. Such an esteem for the mythic Christ requires Christians to modify their claim that Christianity's uniqueness is based on its historicity. More precisely, Christians are called upon to recognize the real and salvific presence of the mythic Buddha and the mythic Krishna (and other Avatars) to their followers. Particular significance is given to the process in which Gautama-not unlike Jesus-was glorified and mythified after death. Christ is always present in His Church, especially in her liturgical celebration. -

A recent publication — Nicholas Ostler’s Empires of the Word (2005) — presents itself in its subtitle as A Language History of the World. Understandably, it deals extensively with what it calls “world languages”, languages which play or have played important roles in world history. An introductory chapter addresses, already in its title, the question “what it takes to be a world language”. The title also provides a provisional answer, viz. “you never can tell”, but the discussion goes beyond mere despair. It opposes the “pernicious belief” which finds expression in a quote from J. R. Firth, a leading British linguist of the mid-twentieth century (p. 20): “World powers make world languages [...] Men who have strong feelings directed towards the world and its affairs have done most. What the humble prophets of linguistic unity would have done without Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English, it it difficult to imagine. Statesmen, soldiers, sailors, and missionaries, men of action, men of strong feelings have made world languages. They are built on blood, money, sinews, and suffering in the pursuit of power.” Ostler is of the opinion that this belief does not stand up to criticism: “As soon as the careers of languages are seriously studied — even the ‘Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and English’ that Firth explicitly mentions as examples — it becomes clear that this self-indulgently tough-minded view is no guide at all to what really makes a language capable of spreading.” He continues on the following page (p. -

The Therīgāthā, an anthology of 73 poems found in the Pali canon, is an example of such an asseveration, composed by theris (women elders of wisdom or senior disciples), some of the first Buddhist nuns who lived in the time of the Buddha 2500 years ago. The gathas (songs or poems) impart significant details concerning early Buddhism and some of its integral elements of mental and spiritual development. -
