Padmasambhava est l’être éveillé qui a subjugué en son temps tous les ennemis qui pouvaient nuire à la diffusion des enseignements du bouddha au Tibet. Grâce à lui, les paroles de l’enseignement ont pu se répandre et dès lors, temples et monastères ont pris place aux pieds des sommets enneigés. En l’invoquant, ce chant rappelle le rôle essentiel que cet être aux allures magiques a joué tant dans l’histoire du pays des neiges que dans l’histoire du bouddhisme. Par cette prière et par la récitation de ses mantras, c’est tout le sens de l’enseignement qui est rappelé à l’esprit, car dans le mantra, le maître -«Gourou»- trône entre le diamant -«Vajra»- et le lotus -«Padma»-. Le maître est donc l’union de ce qui est indestructible, le diamant, symbole de la nature même des phénomènes, et de la compassion incommensurable dont les pétales purs et lumineux du lotus sont le reflet. Le maître, le précieux maître - et au-delà tous les êtres éveillés - est ainsi celui qui exprime spontanément les qualités indestructibles qui jaillissent d’un amour équanime et illimité et de la compréhension ultime de la réalité, expression inconditionnelle de la grande union. — COMMENTARY — From the heights of the Himalayas to the plains of India, the faithful address this famous prayer to Padmasambhava, the enlightened master who subjugated all the malicious spirits who sought to impede the propagation of the Buddha’s teachings in Tibet. Thanks to him, the words of the teachings have been able to spread, and temples and monasteries proliferate beneath the snowy summits. This invocation sung to him recalls the essential role that this magical being has played not only in the history of the land of snows, but in the history of Buddhism as well. By this prayer and the recitation of its mantras, the meaning of the teachings is brought back to mind, for in the mantra, the teacher - «Guru» - is enthroned between the diamond - «Vajra» - and the lotus - «Padma». Hence, the teacher is the union of what is indestructible, the diamond, symbol of the nature of all phenomena, and of the immeasurable compassion symbolized by the luminous and pure lotus petals. Formule quasi magique dans laquelle se succède une série de lettres aux sonorités particulières, il aurait alors la vertu de protéger l’esprit de celui qui le réciterait. Mais au-delà, chaque mantra a un rôle véritable : ici le mantra récité lors des rituels accomplis en lien avec le précieux maître Padmasambhava permet d’abord d’obtenir les bénédictions qui balaieront tous les obstacles à la pratique et à la récitation du mantra du cœur. Comme une première porte d’accès ouverte sur le cœur du maître, la nature de l’esprit, ce mantra constitue métaphoriquement le lieu de pratique qui protège le pratiquant diligent et dévoué. Inondé par les bénédictions, protégé des ennemis qui pourraient le perturber, il demeure ainsi au sein d’un espace où l’esprit pourra s’unir parfaitement au précieux maître. — COMMENTARY — In Sanskrit, the word « mantra » means «mind protector». Miraculous formulas in which letters with a particular sound follow each other, mantras have the virtue of protecting the mind of the one who recite them. But, in addition, each mantra has a deeper role: here the mantra, recited during rituals concerning the precious Master Padmasambhava, allows the practitioner to obtain blessings which sweep away all obstacles to the practice at the heart of mantra recitation: realizing the true nature of mind. Like a first door opened into the teacher’s heart, that is, the nature of the mind, this mantra metaphorically creates the place of practice that protects devoted and diligent practitioners. Flooded with blessings, and protected from enemies that could disturb them, they stand in a space where their minds will be able to unite with the precious teacher perfectly. Ayant invité le maître sous la forme de bénédictions, intérieurement se réalise l’union parfaite en laquelle l’esprit, protégé par la récitation de ce mantra du cœur, ce mantra de l’essence même de Padmasambhava, devient indestructible comme le diamant et purifié de toute obscurité. L’esprit est ainsi pleinement épanoui, sans entrave, libre et vaste, comme celui du maître par qui tout devient illuminé. — COMMENTARY — Whereas the preceding chanted mantra allowed receiving the blessings of the precious teacher, the heart mantra is the one which really and fully unites practitioners with their teacher. Having invited the master transmitted in the form of blessings, the perfect union is attained inwardly. In this union, the mind becomes indestructible as a diamond, protected by the recitation of the heart mantra, essence of Padmasambhava, and free of any obscurations. There will be two stupas, The Namgyal Chöten or “Victory Stupa” to the right and the Changchub Chöten or “Enlightenment Stupa” to the left. Above the Namgyal Chöten to the right there will be images of Buddha Vajradhara with Tilopa and Naropa, and to the left there will be the deities of Long Life: Tsepame, Namgyalma and White Tara. Above the Changchub Chöten there will be Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa to the right and Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri and Vajrapani to the left.

    Fundamentals of Temple Ideology from Eastern Traditions John M. Lundquist Truman Madsen has been a dear friend and mentor to me since the early 1980s. Before that, I knew him at a distance as one of Brigham Young University’s most inspiring and charismatic teachers and writers. He gave me an extraordinary opportunity in March 1981 when he invited me to present a paper at a symposium entitled “The Temple in Antiquity.” My presentation, “The Common Temple Ideology of the Ancient Near East,”1 was published in the resulting symposium proceedings and represented a major step forward in my temple-related research and writing. This article appears after the passage of twenty years and the publication of many articles and one book; it represents a partial repayment for the inspiration and guidance Truman has given me these many years. My purpose here is to summarize my latest thinking on the subject of temple ideology. As I have attempted to delineate in many previous articles and most recently in my book The Temple: Meeting Place of Heaven and Earth,2 a common ideology is shared by all the great temple-building traditions. Even though it may not be possible to identify every feature of this ideology in every tradition, in the larger scheme of things, these traditions all share the same underlying view of the temple. In this article I summarize some fundamental features of the temple ideology that have come more to the forefront of my thinking as a result of recent travel (particularly in Tibet, India, Japan, and Indonesia), reading, and thinking on the temple.

Rather, it is something we can achieve by looking inside. The Buddha turned the wheel of the Dharma three times, meaning that he taught in three different ways. The first turning of the wheel is called the Hinayana, which consists of the teachings on the Four Noble Truths, Meditation, and developing an understanding of the emptiness of self. The second turning is called Mahayana, which involves the study of BUDDHISM & KAGYU LINEAGE Since the Buddha developed all the qualities of meditation to the utmost stages, he was able to reach enlightenment. He did this to demonstrate that all sentient beings also can reach enlightenment. Once of the 3 the emptiness of phenomena and practicing the bodhisattva path. The third turning is the Vajrayana, which involves the understanding that everything, while empty, is also pervaded by Buddha nature. From the Buddha to his principal disciples, to their disciples and so on, the turning of the wheel of Dharma continued from generation to generation.
